2009
Degradation of denuded collagen within adhesive resin-infiltrated dentin is a
pertinent problem in dentin bonding. A biomimetic remineralization scheme that
incorporates non-classic crystallization pathways of fluidic amorphous
nanoprecursors and mesoscopic transformation has been successful in
remineralizing resin-free, acid-etched dentin, with evidence of intrafibrillar
and interfibrillar remineralization. This study tested the hypothesis that
biomimetic remineralization provides a means for remineralizing incompletely
infiltrated resin-dentin interfaces created by etch-and-rinse adhesives. The
remineralization medium consists of a Portland cement/simulated body fluid that
includes polyacrylic acid and polyvinylphosphonic acid biomimetic analogs for
amorphous calcium phosphate dimension regulation and collagen targeting. Both
interfibrillar and intrafibrillar apatites became readily discernible within the
hybrid layers after 2–4 months. In addition, intra-resin apatite clusters were
deposited within the porosities of the adhesive resin matrices. The biomimetic
remineralization scheme provides a proof-of-concept for the adoption of
nanotechnology as an alternative strategy to extend the longevity of
resin-dentin bonds.

The predominant impediments to cutaneous wound regeneration are hemorrhage and bacterial infections that lead to extensive inflammation with lethal impact. We thus developed a series of composite sponges based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) inspired by marjoram essential oil and kaolin (PVA/marjoram/kaolin), adopting a freeze–thaw method to treat irregular wounds by thwarting lethal bleeding and microbial infections. Microstructure analyses manifested three-dimensional interconnected porous structures for PVA/marjoram/kaolin. Additionally, upon increasing marjoram and kaolin concentrations, the pore diameters of the sponges significantly increased, recording a maximum of 34 ± 5.8 µm for PVA-M0.5-K0.1. Moreover, the porosity and degradation properties of PVA/marjoram/kaolin sponges were markedly enhanced compared with the PVA sponge with high swelling capacity. Furthermore, the PVA/marjoram/kaolin sponges exerted exceptional antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus, along with remarkable antioxidant properties. Moreover, PVA/marjoram/kaolin sponges demonstrated significant thrombogenicity, developing high thrombus mass and hemocompatibility, in addition to their remarkable safety toward fibroblast cells. Notably, this is the first study to our knowledge investigating the effectiveness of marjoram in a polymeric carrier for prospective functioning as a wound dressing. Collectively, the findings suggest the prospective usage of the PVA-M0.5-K0.1 sponge in wound healing for hemorrhage and bacterial infection control.

Quaternized Amphiphilic Block Copolymers/Graphene Oxide and a Poly(vinyl alcohol) Coating Layer on Graphene Oxide/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Electrospun Nanofibers for Superhydrophilic and Antibacterial Properties
2019
Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is common polymer for electrospinning, however, its high hydrophobicity is a major drawback, which cause fouling. To introduce hydrophilicity and antibacterial activity, quaternary ammonium-functionalized amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized and blended with a PVDF/graphene oxide (GO) solution, then, electrospun and coated with a hydrophilic polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The amphiphilic block copolymer, consisting of a hydrophobic poly(methyl methacrylate) block and a hydrophilic poly[N,N-2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl methacrylate) block (PMMA-

Electrospinning is a process in which high voltage creates nanostructured fibers with random orientation from a polymer solution. A novel electrospinning instrument was designed and constructed, capable of orienting and collimating the trajectory of the electrified fluid jet. The equipment collimates and adjusts the electrified fluid jet in the X-Y directions using deflector plates connected to a variable electric field. Simultaneously, different membrane thicknesses can be selected, i.e., in the Z direction. Additionally, by programming the sinusoidal function generator to perform an X-Y sweep, Lissajous figures (LF) were obtained. SEM images obtained through XYZ electrospinning of PVC and PVDF membranes were used to determine the control achieved over the orientation distribution of the processed nanofibers and the modification of their diameter, with and without applying the electric field to the deflector plates. The nanofibers obtained from the polymeric membranes, which originated after the straight segment of the Taylor cone, did not exhibit a random trajectory and position. Instead, the collimated electrified fluid jet deposited them in a cross pattern (X-Y) on the collector-cathode plate.

A green approach to improve antibacterial properties of PVC/PVDF film doped by silver nanoparticles via nanosecond laser ablation for wound healing application
2024
Nanocomposite films of (30% PVC/70% PVDF) blend containing silver nanoparticles were synthesized via pulsed laser ablation route (PLA). Changes in physical characterization of PVC/PVDF blend before and after the incorporation of AgNPs have been studied. FTIR results confirms the interaction between AgNPs and PVC/PVDF. XRD results obtain the existence of peak at 38.42̊ in sample PVC/PVDF/Ag4 which confirm the embedded AgNPs in the high concentration. SEM photos confirm the distribution of silver nanoparticles on the surface of the sample in spherical shape which approved the dispersion of silver nanoparticles in PVC/PVDF blend. The inhibitory zone diameters observed for PVC/PVDF/Ag4 against
Escherichia coli
,
Klebsiella pneumonia
,
Staphylococcus aureus
, and
Bacillus cereus
were recorded as 11 ± 1, 10 ± 1, 15.7 ± 0.6, and 17.7 ± 0.6, respectively. PVC/PVDF/AgNPs nanocomposite film could be suggested for biomedical applications such as wound healing products.

A simple method to prepare anion exchange membrane by PVA/EVOH/MIDA for acid recovery by diffusion dialysis
2024
Given the substantial environmental pollution from industrial expansion, environmental protection has become particularly important. Nowadays, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are widely used in wastewater treatment. With the use of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer, and methyl iminodiacetic acid (MIDA), a series of cross-linked AEMs were successfully prepared using the solvent casting technique, and the network structure was formed in the membranes due to the cross-linking reaction between PVA/EVOH and MIDA. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze the prepared membranes. At the same time, its comprehensive properties which include water uptake, linear expansion rate, ion exchange capacity, thermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical stability were thoroughly researched. In addition, diffusion dialysis performance in practical applications was also studied in detail. The acid dialysis coefficient (UH+) ranged from 10.2 to 35.6 × 10−3 m/h. Separation factor (S) value ranged from 25 to 38, which were all larger than that of the commercial membrane DF-120 (UH+: 8.5 × 10−3 m/h, S: 18.5). The prepared membranes had potential application value in acid recovery.

During mineralization, unbound water within the collagen matrix is replaced by apatite. This study tested the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the status of in vitro biomimetic remineralization of hybrid layers, regardless of their moisture contents. Acid-etched dentin was bonded with One-Step with ethanol-wet-bonding, water-wet-bonding, and water-overwet-bonding protocols. Composite-dentin slabs were subjected to remineralization for 1-4 months in a medium containing dual biomimetic analogs, with set Portland cement as the calcium source and characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Remineralization was either non-existent or restricted to the intrafibrillar mode in ethanol-wet-bonded specimens. Extensive intrafibrillar and interfibrillar remineralization was observed in water-wet-bonded specimens. Water-overwet specimens demonstrated partial remineralization of hybrid layers and precipitation of mineralized plates within water channels. The use of ethanol-wet-bonding substantiates that biomimetic remineralization is a progressive dehydration process that replaces residual water in hybrid layers with apatite crystallites.

In this work, biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) nanofibers were successfully fabricated via co-electrospinning. The morphology and microstructure of co-electrospun PVA/P(VDF-HFP) nanofibers were analyzed, demonstrating that P(VDF-HFP) incorporation significantly affected fiber diameter and phase distribution. These structural features altered the fiber diameter and surface area of the co-electrospun system, thereby affecting interfacial polarization and the resulting dielectric and energy storage performance. As a result, the dielectric constant of the PVA/P(VDF-HFP) nanofibers (M1) was enhanced by up to 1.8 times compared with pure PVA nanofibers (M0), owing to interfacial polarization arising from increased surface charge accumulation at the PVA/P(VDF-HFP) interfaces. Meanwhile, dielectric loss and electrical conductivity were effectively controlled, indicating improved electrical stability of the co-electrospun system. Furthermore, ferroelectric and energy storage analyses revealed that appropriate incorporation of P(VDF-HFP) and phase distribution significantly enhanced polarization and energy storage performance. The energy storage density increased from 0.83 to 3.21 mJ cm−3 at 20 MV m−1, corresponding to an improvement of 287% while maintaining a high energy efficiency of approximately 90%. Owing to their favorable dielectric properties, mechanical flexibility, and environmental compatibility, the co-electrospun PVA/P(VDF-HFP) nanofibers demonstrate great potential for low-field wearable and biomedical energy storage devices.

Inspired by the double network hydrogel systems we report the formulation of dual networks, which expands the repertoire of this class of materials for potential biomedical applications. The tough dual network hydrogels were designed through sequential interpenetrating polymer formation, applying green chemistry and low-cost methods, devoid of any initiator-activator complexes that may pose risks in biomedical applications. The dual networks were synthesized in two steps, firstly the water soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) was subjected to cryogelation that formed the first network, which was then expanded by intrusion of a dilute solution of sodium alginate and complexed with a solution of calcium chloride under ambient conditions and further freeze-thawed. These hydrogels are flexible, ductile and porous with the ability to absorb and retain fluids as well as possess the versatility to easily incorporate biological molecules/drugs/antibiotics to be applied in tissue matrices or drug delivery systems. The dual network hydrogels can be tailored to have varying mechanical properties, shapes, size, thickness and particularly can be made physically porous if required, to suit the users intended application.

. Yet, these manufacturing processes have limitations in scalability, design flexibility and robustness. Here we demonstrate a new all-in-one methodology for the fabrication and the programming of soft machines. Instead of relying on the assembly of individual parts, our approach harnesses interfacial flows in elastomers that progressively cure to robustly produce monolithic pneumatic actuators whose shape can easily be tailored to suit applications ranging from artificial muscles to grippers. We rationalize the fluid mechanics at play in the assembly of our actuators and model their subsequent morphing. We leverage this quantitative knowledge to program these soft machines and produce complex functionalities, for example sequential motion obtained from a monotonic stimulus. We expect that the flexibility, robustness and predictive nature of our methodology will accelerate the proliferation of soft robotics by enabling the assembly of complex actuators, for example long, tortuous or vascular structures, thereby paving the way towards new functionalities stemming from geometric and material nonlinearities.
An all-in-one methodology for fabricating soft robotics reported here uses interfacial flows in elastomers that cure to produce actuators that can be tailored to suit applications from artificial muscles to grippers.
