System Control Applications of Low-Power Radio Frequency Devices
2017
This paper conceptualizes a low-power wireless sensor network design for application employment to reduce theft of portable computer devices used in educational institutions today. The aim of this study is to design and develop a reliable and robust wireless network that can eradicate accessibility of a device's human interface. An embedded system supplied by an energy harvesting source, installed on the portable computer device, may represent one of multiple slave nodes which request regular updates from a standalone master station. A portable computer device which is operated in an undesignated area or in a field perimeter where master to slave communication is restricted, indicating a possible theft scenario, will initiate a shutdown of its operating system and render the device unusable. Consequently, an algorithm in the device firmware may ensure the necessary steps are executed to track the device, irrespective whether the device is enabled. Design outcomes thus far indicate that a wireless network using low-power embedded hardware, is feasible for anti-theft applications. By incorporating one of the latest Bluetooth low-energy, ANT+, ZigBee or Thread wireless technologies, an anti-theft system may be implemented that has the potential to reduce major portable computer device theft in institutions of digitized learning.

Hardware Heritage—Briefcase-Sized Computers
2021
The computer industry was a vivid place in the 1980s. IT systems and technologies thrived, and the market offered ever better, smaller, and more useful machines. Innovative technical solutions or intelligent designs that satisfied customers’ needs are often listed as computer hardware milestones. Consequently, they became a permanent part of the computerisation history and can be considered hardware heritage artefacts. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the usability of selected portable computer systems. The foundation of the work is a literature review that includes technical specifications, industry reviews, and research papers. Archival materials were obtained from the Internet Archive. Studies have revealed that the main problems design engineers of portable computers had to tackle in the 1980s were the reduction of mass and size of the computer system, portable power (self-power), and the quality of the displayed image.

2023
Every person has an ingrained desire to learn. Human beings have developed new approaches, methods, and tools for acquiring the language using their intellect and experiences from the prehistoric era to the modern, technologically advanced era. According to the Encyclopedia of Language Learning, since the dawn of human civilization, everyone has developed and learned in their immediate surroundings, which includes politics, economics, education, and technology. Such a setting molds and shapes human minds to act for development at every level and become motivated to accomplish goals. Through some transitional phases of English language learning, such as moving from the grammar-translation technique to more modern communicative language teaching and from computer-assisted language learning to mobile-assisted language learning, this human psychology of language learning can be realized. The subject of current education has emerged as a technology and innovation representative. The rapid advancement of technology has made it more important than ever for people to use it effectively in their daily lives. In this stage of evolution, users place a high value on finishing their tasks successfully, whether through social interaction, informational learning, or language acquisition. The rapid advancement of computer-assisted language learning and the abundance of software and web pages have led to the emergence of the acronym \"MALL\" (mobile-assisted language learning). A tool that is available anywhere, at any moment, has been required to access this software and websites. The fast advancement of mobile technology and the creation of ever-more-advanced features enabled mobile devices to begin aiding in and offering the resources for software and website accessibility at the same time. The laptop has taken the place of the desktop, which is now progressively being replaced by the use of a cutting-edge palm top. People can now study and acquire information thanks to technological advancements and inventions like Android smartphones, tablets, iPhones, and iPods. Any scholar who looks into determining its efficacy during the transition phase is alarmed by the context of such current, emerging issues in the study and teaching of languages. As a result, a lot of research is being done in the area of mobile technology to determine the value and efficacy of different portable devices in general and mobile-assisted language learning in particular.

2020
As interest in and use of telehealth during the COVID-19 global pandemic increase, the potential of digital health to increase access and quality of mental health is becoming clear. Although the world today must “flatten the curve” of spread of the virus, we argue that now is the time to “accelerate and bend the curve” on digital health. Increased investments in digital health today will yield unprecedented access to high-quality mental health care. Focusing on personal experiences and projects from our diverse authorship team, we share selected examples of digital health innovations while acknowledging that no single piece can discuss all the impressive global efforts past and present. Exploring the success of telehealth during the present crisis and how technologies like apps can soon play a larger role, we discuss the need for workforce training, high-quality evidence, and digital equity among other factors critical for bending the curve further.

Novel Approach to Disseminate Educational Materials Using Technology
2020
Abstract
Introduction/Objective
Our facility initiated a modification to an existing on-site Specialist in Blood Bank Technology and Transfusion Medicine (SBB) Program, in July 2018. The modification changed a local program to a hybrid on-site and distance learning program. The curriculum was established using a dynamic repository of recorded presentations (video/audio recordings and PowerPoint/audio presentations) as part of the self-paced, didactic educational portion of the program. The challenge was to provide a primary method for accessing the didactic portion of the program that would be flexible and available through a variety of venues. Our SBB Program was awarded $2,500 by the ASCP Foundation Laboratory Science Program Director Educational Grant in 2018 in support of modifying the current SBB program to a modified, hybrid on-site plus on-line program.
Methods
The grant provided the necessary seed money to purchase iPads, seen as the method for delivery of the educational materials. The Apple iPad® (Apple, Inc., One Apple Park Way, Cupertino, CA 95014) was purchased to enable student access to on-line lecture materials through the company’s secure web portal. The SBB Program Director prepared the iPad for the students to ensure the on-line links were usable. The Directors demonstrated the use of the iPad to the students for accessing educational content during the orientation week.

NA-Educational Practice Abstract
Conclusion
The acquisition of iPads offered the flexibility needed by the students to access learner materials throughout their day where Wi-Fi is available (at work, home, café, etc.) without being dependent upon work or home computers. Further, use of the iPads has opened the opportunity to access assignments, download required texts where electronically available, and access the company learner management system for completing quizzes related to the student assignments.

The development of mobile computing technology has enabled the delivery of psychological interventions while people go about their everyday lives. The original visions of the potential of these \"ecological momentary interventions\" were presented over a decade ago, and the widespread adoption of smartphones in the intervening years has led to a variety of research studies exploring the feasibility of these aspirations. However, there is a dearth of research describing the different dimensions, characteristics, and features of these interventions, as constructed.
To provide an overview of the definitions given for \"ecological momentary interventions\" in the treatment of common mental health disorders, and describe the set of technological and interaction possibilities which have been used in the design of these interventions.
A systematic search identified relevant literature published between 2009 and 2020 in the PubMed, PsycInfo, and ACM Guide to the Computing Literature databases. Following screening, data were extracted from eligible articles using a standardized extraction worksheet. Selected articles were then thematically categorized.
The search identified 583 articles of which 64 met the inclusion criteria. The interventions target a range of mental health problems, with diverse aims, intervention designs and evaluation approaches. The studies employed a variety of features for intervention delivery, but recent research is overwhelmingly comprised of studies based on smartphone apps (30 of 42 papers that described an intervention). Twenty two studies employed sensors for the collection of data in order to provide just-in-time support or predict psychological states.
With the shift towards smartphone apps, the vision for EMIs has begun to be realised. Recent years have seen increased exploration of the use of sensors and machine learning, but the role of humans in the delivery of EMI is also varied. The variety of capabilities exhibited by EMIs motivates development of a more precise vocabulary for capturing both automatic and human tailoring of these interventions.

2024
What will the future be? We wonder! In this survey, we explore the gap between current research in egocentric vision and the ever-anticipated future, where wearable computing, with outward facing cameras and digital overlays, is expected to be integrated in our every day lives. To understand this gap, the article starts by envisaging the future through character-based stories, showcasing through examples the limitations of current technology. We then provide a mapping between this future and previously defined research tasks. For each task, we survey its seminal works, current state-of-the-art methodologies and available datasets, then reflect on shortcomings that limit its applicability to future research. Note that this survey focuses on software models for egocentric vision, independent of any specific hardware. The paper concludes with recommendations for areas of immediate explorations so as to unlock our path to the future always-on, personalised and life-enhancing egocentric vision.
