Young Blazers off on new trail
The Blazers also drafted projected superstar center Greg Oden, who led Ohio State to the 2007 NCAA championship game as a freshman, with the top pick last year. Pritchard acquired several other promising young players, including sharpshooter Martell Webster, guard Sergio Rodriguez (22), 2006 All-Rookie team forward Channing Frye (25), forward Ike Diogu (25), and rookies such as hot-scoring guard Jerryd Bayless (20), high-flying swingman Rudy Fernandez (23), and teenager Nicolas Batum (19), who enters the season as the starting shooting guard.

Portland Trail Blazers guards Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum have become the NBA's brightest young backcourt in the unlikeliest way imaginable. \"If there's a boxing match, or a Ronda Rousey fight, or a big game, I always have something at my house,\" Lillard said.

Oden will miss season; Knee surgery puts Trail Blazer on ice
2007
While [GREG ODEN Cartilage] was told presurgery that microfracture surgery was a possibility, [Don Roberts] didn't determine it was needed until after the procedure began. Roberts broke the news to Oden after the surgery was completed. [Kevin Pritchard] said Roberts told the Blazers that Oden has \"an unbelievable chance of recovering fully\" and \"this surgery looks as promising as any.\" Oden is expected to rehabilitate in Portland and isn't expected to try out for USA Basketball's 2008 Olympic team. \"There is no mold for any player,\" said Pritchard. \"Greg has had a couple injuries. But this one is a nongenetic, nonchronic injury.\" Without Oden, Pritchard believes the Blazers have enough big men to carry the team, including former Celtic Raef LaFrentz, LaMarcus Aldridge, Joel Pryzbilla, and newcomer Channing Frye. The Blazers dealt [Zach Randolph], who averaged team-bests of 23.6 points and 10.1 rebounds, to New York on draft night after selecting Oden. \"I've been on teams where guys have received knee injuries,\" [Danny Ainge] said. \"It's never fun for anyone when they get hurt. I felt bad for him. This is no fun. He's a good kid. Greg Oden knows he's the No. 1 pick in the draft, but even if he was the 20th pick I'd feel bad.\"

Robinson and Roy in buddy system
2011
Brandon Roy was the gifted and composed swingman who was close to declaring for the NBA draft out of high school but instead became the model four-year college player. While Robinson has constantly had to prove himself as an NBA player - entering dunk contests to display his mind-boggling athleticism - Roy methodically emerged as an All-Star, becoming the face of the Portland Trail Blazers with his understated but effective scoring style.

Trail Blazers Try To See Basket As Half Full
2010
Nate McMillan could win the N.B.A.'s coach of the year award because he not only Lewis-and-Clarked the Portland Trail Blazers through the league's strangest season to reach the playoffs, but ruptured his Achilles' tendon in the process. Crutches long gone, he patiently fielded an array of questions last week from a huddle of reporters asking about the latest big-font news in this Blazers-mad city: the All-Star guard Brandon Roy had torn the meniscus in his knee and his availability for the playoffs was in serious doubt.

IT'S NO BULL: PIPPEN STILL IS LEADING
2002
Pippen has assumed - some might say reassumed - a leadership role on a team that had the reputation of being Knuckleheads United. In all his years with Chicago, Pippen was generally seen as a willing second to the dominant alpha male, Michael Jordan. Last night, a heckler at the FleetCenter kept calling Pippen \"Bagger Vance\" - and it wasn't because of any potential resemblance to Will Smith. It was because Bagger was a caddie. The recent Portland surge is attributable in part to Pippen regaining his health. He missed 18 games with a bum knee and other ailments early in the season. The Blazers struggled. They had a new coaching staff and a lot of new faces, and Pippen briefly talked about retirement. (He's under contract through next season at numbers only Bill Gates could love.) There were even rumors of Pippen being traded, something [Maurice Cheeks] hoped wouldn't happen. Pippen made his presence felt last night when it mattered most. The Blazers led, 83-80, but no sooner did Pippen arrive then Portland went on a crushing 8-1 run. Pippen himself closed it with a driving layup and later added two free throws. The Celtics got within 4 late in the game when Pippen was called for a foul on a 3- point attempt by Paul Pierce.

Blazers owner donates $4M, Stoudamire lends his voice in blood drive
1999
Portland owner Paul Allen put his money where Damon Stoudamire's mouth is -- the American Red Cross. The Paul G. Allen Charitable Foundation gave a $4 million grant Wednesday to the Portland chapter of the American Red Cross to help fund the Western Area Community Cord Blood Bank. All of which sounds just great to Stoudamire, a Portland native who has been the spokesman for the Portland Red Cross chapter since he was drafted in 1995 by Toronto.
