Prayer in Islamic Thought and Practice
2013
The five daily prayers (Salāt) that constitute the second pillar of Islam deeply pervade the everyday life of observant Muslims. Until now, however, no general study has analyzed the rules governing Salāt, the historical dimensions of its practice and the rich variety of ways that it has been interpreted within the Islamic tradition. Marion Holmes Katz's richly textured book offers a broad historical survey of the rules, values and interpretations relating to Salāt. This innovative study on the subject examines the different ways in which prayer has been understood in Islamic law, Sufi mysticism and Islamic philosophy. Katz's book also goes beyond the spiritual realm to analyze the political dimensions of prayer, including scholars' concerns about the righteousness and piety of rulers. The last chapter raises significant issues around gender roles, including the question of women's participating in and leading public worship. This book will resonate with students of Islamic history and comparative religion.

Jawa Barat (Indonesia) -- Religious life and customs
2009
Sanctity is a concept recognized by Muslims throughout the Islamic world, and often motivates observances with highly localized characteristics. Julian Millie spent a year attending a supplication ritual in which Muslims of West Java directed their prayers to Allah through 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jaelani (d. 1166). This man, whose tomb even today is a popular pilgrimage site in Baghdad, is widely considered the most powerful intercessor of all the saints of Islam. The supplication takes the form of reading or singing the narrative proofs of 'Abd al-Qadir's saintliness in a ritual context. The ritual has deep roots in the Sundanese culture of West Java. The book captures the variety of understandings that participants bring to the ritual when it is held in various contexts, including Java's largest Sufi order, religious schools and private homes.

“Observe the Prayers and the Middle Prayer”: Jewish and Christian Origins of Q. 2:238
2018
The close and mutually fruitful ties between the Jewish tradition and the Muslim tradition are topics that scholars have been intensely dealing with for the past 200 years. The times of the prayers in Islam were formulated as a result of the textual influence of Judaism and Christianity that penetrated Islamic literature through the Jewish and Christian converts. It is my opinion that Q. 2:238 is a metamorphosis of the Talmudic expression, “One must always be careful of the Minḥa prayer”. In Muslim literature itself, one can find reference to the idea that the extra holiness of the ṣalāt al-ʿaṣr in Islam was influenced by early Jewish and Christian texts. The Muslim tradition portrays the Jews and the Christians as neglecting prayer, so that it is the antithesis of the Muslims who are very strict when it comes to prayer. This tendentious description is for theological and polemic purposes in order to justify the existence of Muslims as part of the newly chosen nation.
