Emergency preparedness
2024
Managing medical emergencies is a cornerstone of effective healthcare delivery across diverse settings, including schools, general practice, endurance sports, and dental clinics. This review highlights the critical role of preparedness, systematic response strategies, and context-specific management approaches in ensuring patient safety and improving outcomes during emergencies. Key methodologies such as the ABCDE and PABCD algorithms demonstrate the importance of structured assessments in identifying and addressing life-threatening conditions promptly. Training in non-technical skills and crisis resource management further enhances the capabilities of healthcare professionals in pre-hospital and clinical environments. Challenges, including variability in training, resource limitations, and the medico-legal implications of emergency management, are discussed alongside opportunities for improvement. The findings underscore the need for continuous education, better resource allocation, and the adoption of evidence-based practices to strengthen emergency preparedness and response across healthcare domains.Aim of the WorkThis review aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of managing medical emergencies, focusing on preparedness, systematic approaches, and context-specific management in various healthcare settings, particularly dental clinics. It seeks to identify common types of emergencies, evaluate current practices, and highlight challenges faced by practitioners. By integrating insights from diverse contexts, the review aspires to propose actionable strategies for enhancing emergency preparedness, training, and response systems. Additionally, it aims to underscore the importance of integrating advanced technologies, structured protocols, and interdisciplinary collaboration in building resilient healthcare systems capable of managing emergencies effectively.

Establishing a Training Standard for Family Medicine Practitioners in Healthcare Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Communication in Saudi Arabia
This literature review examines the critical need for standardized training in healthcare emergency preparedness and crisis communication for family medicine practitioners (FMPs) in Saudi Arabia. Given the country’s unique position as a hub for large-scale religious gatherings, such as the Hajj, Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system must be prepared to handle both routine and crisis-level healthcare demands. While Saudi Arabia has significantly developed its healthcare infrastructure and emergency response capabilities in recent years, gaps remain in the training of frontline healthcare workers, particularly in primary care. FMPs, who often serve as the first point of contact in the healthcare system, play a vital role in managing health risks, addressing chronic conditions, and providing preventive care. This review synthesizes findings on the current state of emergency preparedness in Saudi Arabia, highlighting both the strengths and limitations of existing initiatives, as well as the potential for FMPs to contribute to a resilient healthcare framework. Additionally, it discusses global best practices and proposes specific training elements—such as simulation exercises, interdisciplinary drills, and psychological first aid—that could be integrated into FMP curricula to enhance preparedness. Strengthening FMP training in emergency response and public health crises is essential to advancing Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives for a sustainable, high-performing healthcare system capable of responding to both regional and global health emergencies.

“One community at a time”: promoting community resilience in the face of natural hazards and public health challenges
2023
Background
Resilience is vital for facing natural disasters and public health challenges. Despite the significance of resilience-building activities, there is a scarcity of locally-tailored planning and response strategies, leaving communities incapable of addressing the unique challenges posed by natural disasters and public health crises. This study aims to explore how the “One Community at a Time” approach enhances community resilience in facing natural hazards and public health challenges.
Methods
A systematic review was conducted over journal articles published from January 2001 to April 2023 through PRISMA approach. Multiple databases such as Web of Science and Scopus were thoroughly searched. We used independent screening by two researchers and painstaking data extraction using standardized forms. This approach was adopted to assure the reliability, validity, and precision of our study selection and analysis. The included studies’ quality was evaluated by the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool.
Results
In the evaluation, 35 studies were deemed eligible for inclusion and underwent in-depth examination. Several major components of “One Community at a Time” have been identified, including social capital and networks, local knowledge and learning, effective governance and leadership, preparedness and response capacity, and adaptive infrastructure and resources. This framework highlights the significance of individualized approaches to resilience-building initiatives, recognizing that each community has specific strengths, needs, and challenges.
Conclusion
Relevant stakeholders can adapt suitable resilient strategies to help prepare and recover from natural hazards and public health challenges. By adopting a localized strategy, stakeholders can collaborate to develop a culture of readiness and resilience, ultimately leading to more sustainable and resilient communities. This framework advises community-based groups, local government, and other stakeholders on prioritizing partnerships, preparedness planning, community participation, and leadership as essential components of creating and maintaining resilience. “One Community at a Time” framework offers practical guidance for community-based organizations, local government, and other stakeholders to prioritize partnerships, preparedness planning, community participation, and leadership as essential components of creating and sustaining resilience.
