PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES SoHo's Morrison Hotel Gallery celebrates 10 years as a home of precious rock images
Morrison Hotel's images range from Herman Leonard's muscular shots of jazz stars in the '40s and '50s (a young Miles Davis, a sensual Lena Horne) to [Henry Diltz] and Joel Bernstein's woodsy portraits of the seminal '60s singer-songwriters, Mick Rock's in-your-face shots of glam rockers from the '70s, Janette Beckman's animated take on hip-hop artists of the '80s and Merri Cyr's rapturous shots of Jeff Buckley in the '90s. \"They're 'hang out' photos,\" Diltz says. \"They weren't at all set up.\" Debbie Harry of Blondie in Coney Island, summer 1977 BOB GRUEN BOBGRUEN.COM [Bruce Springsteen] arriving in a 1960 'vette for a 1978 N.J. photo session. ZEPPELIN'S STAIRWAY TO SUCCESS ; EXCLUSIVE Snaps of famous Midlands rockers never seen before
The pictures were taken by celebrity photographer Neal Preston, who became a close pal of rock stars Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones. 'Jimmy Page was cradling his right hand on stage and I thought he was striking a dramatic pose,' recalled Preston. 'But in fact, he was in a great deal of pain. Journalist [Dave Lewis], acknowledged as the leading commentator on all matters Zeppelin, said: 'Preston's shots display the often underplayed humour and camaraderie of Zeppelin on the road.
A '70s SENSATION'S NEW `DAY IN THE SUN' Peter Frampton Alive and Picking
One song from that collaboration made it to the new album, as did a number [Neal Preston-Peter Frampton] wrote with ex-Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain. But the bulk of \"Peter Frampton\" was written with co-producer Kevin Savigar, a Rod Stewart associate. With a sound true enough to Frampton's glory days and lyrics that confront his frustration and bitterness - as well as newfound happiness - it's a strong comeback album, an unaffected effort that just might do the trick. \"It's early days yet. We just don't know,\" he cautions. Except for the 1991 death of Steve Marriott, Frampton's old bandmate in Humble Pie. The two men made a powerful team in those days: Marriott, a firebrand who earned his '60s fame in the Small Faces, toughened Frampton's cerebral, jazzy pop flow with the soulful R&B grit of his incomparable voice. Ironically, after years of estrangement (\"We'd had our falling out,\" Frampton says, \"but we were not not friends\"), the two had begun working together again.
