Prince : the last interview and other conversations
There is perhaps no musician who has had as much influence on the sound of contemporary American music than Prince. His pioneering compositions brought a variety of musical genres into a singular funky and virtuosic sound. In this remarkable collection, and with his signature mix of seduction and demur, the late visionary reflects on his artistry, identity, and the sacrifices and soul-searching it took to stay true to himself. An Introduction by Hanif Abdurraqib offers astute, contemporary perspective and brilliantly contextualizes the collected interviews.
Self-Image Projection in Mohammed Bin Salman's Political Interviews: A Pragma-Semantic Approach to Political Discourse Analysis
This paper presents a political discourse analysis (PDA) of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s (MBS) interviews. The main purpose of the paper is to show how the image of a competent political leader is linguistically rendered by various linguistic practices in the selected interviews. The paper draws on political discourse analysis as discussed by Chilton (2004) and Chilton and Schaffner (2002). The analytical focus is on demonstrating how a positive self-image is communicated linguistically and deciphering the socio-political meanings encoded in the selected interviews at the pragmatic and semantic levels of analysis. The corpus of this study constitutes four interviews conducted with MBS: his interview with CBS TV in 2019, his interview on Vision 2030 broadcast on Saudi national TV in 2021, his interview with The Atlantic in 2022, and his interview with FOX News in 2023. The study depends on a mixed-method approach manifested in the employment of both quantitative and qualitative analyses. There are three main findings in this paper: First, in the selected interviews, MBS not only does politics but also projects a positive self-image by presenting himself as a solidary and collective, decisive, diplomatic, human-rights observer, and broader-goals-seeking leader. Second, these positive characteristics of a competent leader have been linguistically manifested at the pragmatic and semantic levels of analysis. Third, political interviewing is a form of mediatized political discourse that communicates a specific ideology-laden message of politicians.
A Qualitative Study Assessing the Barriers to Implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery
Background Previous studies have quantitatively assessed Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guideline implementation and compliance, and identified the existence of compliance issues with the programs. This is the first study to qualitatively assess the reasons behind compliance issues in ERAS programs. The aim of this study was to elicit barriers to implementation and functioning of the ERAS program at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Methods A series of interviews were carried out with key stakeholders in order to explore barriers preventing effective functioning of the program 1 year after implementation. Interview transcripts were analysed. Data analysis involved a grounded theory methodology. Results Analysis of the data identified four key themed areas of practice that presented barriers: patient-related factors, staff-related factors, practice-related issues, and resources. These overarching themes were generated from subcategories that were linked to generate theory. Conclusions For the ERAS program to be implemented successfully with high levels of element compliance, the four key areas need to be addressed. As barriers to ongoing effective care become apparent, these should be managed in order to optimize the synergistic effects of this multimodal program of patient care.
‘I’ve never been so stressed in my life’: a qualitative analysis of young adults’ lived experience amidst pandemic restrictions in Prince Edward Island, Canada
ObjectivesThis qualitative study aimed to explore how young adults experienced the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to extensive lockdowns, social isolation and psychosocial distress. Specifically, this research focused on how the pandemic impacted those who did not contract COVID-19 and lived in a low-risk geographical location. The focus was young adults given they have large social circles (high risk for disease transmission) and have an increased propensity to mental health conditions. These insights can inform planning for future pandemics.DesignThis paper draws on 30 in-depth semistructured interviews. Data were analysed inductively following the principles of a constructivist grounded theory approach.Setting and participants30 young adults living in Prince Edward Island during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Canadian province with a low number of COVID-19 cases at the time of data collection.ResultsWe developed four themes that describe the experience of young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) life course disruption, (2) fear and anxiety about the COVID-19 virus, (3) isolation and loss of hope and (4) strategies for managing adversity. Our findings highlight the areas of young adults’ lives that were affected by extensive social changes related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We demonstrate that even individuals who had not contracted the virus were considerably impacted.ConclusionWe provide a detailed description of the comprehensive impact of COVID-19 on low-risk young adults not previously infected with the COVID-19 virus. By reflecting on the biographical disruption experienced by young adults, we highlight the need and opportunity to direct healthcare resources towards identifying and addressing the secondary impacts of pandemics. Consequently, these findings can guide decisions relating to future pandemic restrictions to better account for the experiences of individuals living through them.
Urbanismo futurista saudí como puerta al Indo-Pacífico
The Indo-Pacific is presented as a new geographical area from the perspective of international relations and geopolitics, which presents both challenges and opportunities. This research analyses the relationship in the contemporary world of the following elements: fossil fuel crisis, climate action, economic diversification, futuristic urbanism, smart cities, and cognitive urbanism. All of this is within the scope of the rising megalopolises of the Indo-Pacific space that have flourished quickly and disorderly, many of them housing over ten million people. This is presented as a problem that requires immediate, effective, and environmentally friendly solutions. The Saudi proposal could contribute to regional leadership and, therefore, to a role as a gateway to the West. Regarding geographical space, we focus on the Arabian Peninsula and especially Saudi Arabia for three reasons: the geographical location between, West and East; it is a strategic place in world trade, and it is the State where two of the three most important areas for the Muslim religion are located, especially Mecca. As an intersectional issue, it should be noted that the Asia-Pacific region is home to over 60% of the total number of Muslims, around 1.5 billion people. The figure could be similar in the Indo-Pacific space and even increase if some other places with Muslim majorities gain weight in the borders. The obligation to comply with the religious precept of traveling to Mecca once in a lifetime makes this action (called Umrah or Hajj) an element of soft power for Saudi Arabia in its sphere of influence regionally and in the Indo-Pacific space. The religious issue is not minor, because although there is skepticism in the West, the progress made in Saudi Arabia in the last decade at the dawn of the leadership of its prime minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is remarkable. In a religious sense, the agreement promoted by Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Alissa, leader of the World League of Islam, with the approval of the Mecca Charter in 2019, is noteworthy. An agreement was signed by religious leaders from 139 countries, reflecting a significant effort to promote unit and cooperation among the global Muslim community. We proceed with a mixed methodology. On the one hand, we conduct a specialized interdisciplinary bibliographic review, although focused on international relations. On the other hand, due to the novelty of some aspects discussed, institutional sources available on the internet have been consulted. Finally, a series of profiles have been identified to proceed through semi-structured interviews, from which qualitative analysis insights have been extracted to establish conclusions. This paper presents a five-point structure in addition to the conclusions. In the introduction, a brief historical contextualization is made, the methodology is detailed and the profiles of the semi-structured interviews are indicated. The first item is entitled The Challenges of the Indo-Pacific. The theoretical debate on the geographical scope of space is referenced and some of the most outstanding challenges are identified through semi-structured interviews. Likewise, the Saudi position in the region and the visibility of the Arab Peninsula in a new space, the Indo-Pacific, which decentralizes the picture of China and India, is argued. The second point, the Smart City and the cognitive city propose the critical exploration of the ontological limits of the new models of urbanism in which human beings give up control to intelligent algorithms. If these actions are not backed up with human supervision, there will be a risk of falling into algocracies. The current regulatory proposals regarding artificial intelligence are between total state supervision and even biometric control of people in the People's Republic of China versus the European model of Artificial Intelligence Law that guarantees rights and freedoms and respect for privacy. In this section, the model of the cognitive city is presented at the dawn of the epistemological debate on its suitability to solve the challenges of the megalopolises of the Digital Revolution. The point is concluded by warning of the danger of the dictatorship of the algorithm or algocracy, if the limits and controls to artificial intelligence in futuristic urbanism are not well planned. All the points above show the coherence in the scientific discussion and converge in the title The Line and the Gateway to the Indo-Pacific. This is the point at which, after exploring the challenges of space, analysing the role of the Arabian Peninsula, and planting the differences between the smart and the cognitive city as a proposal for the challenge of megalopolis urbanism, we go on to explain Saudi Arabia's proposal about futuristic urbanism and to offer an analysis on the role of the link between East and West and therefore of a gateway in the Indo-Pacific. At this point, the Line Cognitive City project is justified and argued from Saudi Arabia's position in the Indo-Pacific, futuristic urbanism in the region, and how it could serve as an agent to consolidate Saudi leadership in the area. Some of the technological proposals and models of interaction between humans and machines are explained, defining the cyborg city model, since the approach of the cognitive city, The Line aims at constant communication between citizens and artificial intelligence, understanding it as a whole. The research is not based on rejection, skepticism, or technological Luddism, but this work refers to challenges, sensitivities, and high expectations regarding deadlines and compliance. As for the conclusions, Saudi Arabia's weight as a regional power is confirmed, achieved in a few years at the dawn of the leadership of its prime minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. It also clearly reflects on the role of the new cities marked by the massive use of technology concerning the challenges of the Indo-Pacific as one of the spaces with the greatest demographic and urban weight today. As for The Line cognitive city model, it is found that, although it is driven by the profits of the fossil fuel industries, its success depends not only on technical execution but also on the ability to generate intangible benefits for society and economic benefits for investors.
Climatic and Environmental Changes Affecting Communities in Atlantic Canada
Small rural coastal communities located in Atlantic Canada are vulnerable to the effects of climate and environmental changes. Major storms have impounded the coastline, causing much physical damage and affecting the socioeconomics of these communities that are composed of an aging population. The current study relays findings based on interviews completed in 2011–2012, following the 2010 winter storms in Atlantic Canada. It portrays the physical and social–ecological impacts affecting 10 coastal communities located in the provinces of Québec, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Semi-structured interviews held in these provinces are the basis for the contributions of this research. The findings reveal physical changes related to coastal erosion from high-wave impacts and storm surge causing flooding of the coastal zone. Also considered are strategies preferred and actually implemented by residents, such as building of protection walls, although undesirable. Due to funding constraints, however, many of these large-scale flood protection projects are not possible without governmental support. Instead, it is suggested that development be controlled and some respondents in this study upheld that relocation be used to alleviate the situation. Finally, more work is required to improve emergency planning. Better concerted short- and long-term responses need to be coordinated by local authorities and higher up in the government in order to ensure the sustainability of these coastal communities.
Sense of belonging to local community in small-to-medium sized Canadian urban areas: a comparison of immigrant and Canadian-born residents
Background Sense of belonging is recognized as an important determinant of psychological and physical well-being. Research in Canada has shown that sense of belonging has increased in recent years although important variations exist between regions and among certain ethnic groups. Methods The objective of this paper is to examine differences in sense of belonging to local community between Canadian-born and immigrant residents in three small-to-medium sized urban areas using primary data collected in: 1) Charlottetown, PEI; 2) Hamilton, Ontario, and 3) Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A mixed method approach is used in the analysis. First, a household telephone survey ( n  = 1529) asked respondents to rate their sense of belonging. This data was analyzed by way of summary statistics and ordered logistic regression. Second, a series of focus groups with immigrants in the three cities included questions on belonging and well-being ( n  = 11). Results The research found that sense of belonging is very high in the overall sample and in the three study sites, particularly in Charlottetown, and that there are no significant differences in levels of belonging between Canadian-born and immigrant respondents. However, among immigrants, sense of belonging was significantly lower for those living in Canada for 5 years or less. Consistent with the literature, positive mental health was found to be strongly associated with a positive sense of belonging for both Canadian-born and immigrant respondents. For immigrants, positive sense of belonging was associated with full-time work and home-ownership, two factors not associated with the Canadian-born population. The paper also revealed that immigrants placed greater importance on knowing their neighbours on a first name basis and generally trusting people as determinants of a positive sense of belonging. Finally, the focus groups revealed that in addition to displaying a sense of belonging to their city of residence, immigrants also maintain strong feelings of belonging to their ethnic group. Conclusions The paper concludes by offering several public health recommendations on how belonging can be enhanced among recent immigrants in smaller Canadian cities; these include improved coordination of services in order to contribute to a less overwhelming settlement process for immigrants.
Prince Rogers Nelson: from \Dirty Mind\ to Devout Jehovah's Witness
Prince Rogers Nelson (born: June 7, 1958) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was a musical innovator and known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup, and wide vocal range. When he passed unexpectedly on April 21, 2016, he had built an immensely successful career that spanned over 30 years. Although Prince is widely known for his highly sexual behavior, we know less about his spiritual beliefs as well as how these beliefs influenced his public persona and private life. Through the lens of social identity theory, this manuscript will examine how Prince demonstrated his belief in God, his values, and the changes that he made in his life after he became a devout Jehovah's Witness. In particular, this manuscript will provide song lyrics and excerpts from televised and print interviews to qualitatively respond to the following three questions: (1) How did Prince demonstrate his belief in God in his music? (2) What were Prince's values? (3) What changes did Prince make in his public performances after he became a Jehovah's Witness?
Values and Preferences Related to Cancer Risk among Red and Processed Meat Eaters: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study with Semi-Structured Interviews
Introduction: Over the last decade, the possible impact of meat intake on overall cancer incidence and mortality has received considerable attention, and authorities have recommended decreasing consumption; however, the benefits of reducing meat consumption are small and uncertain. As such, individual decisions to reduce consumption are value- and preference-sensitive. Consequently, we undertook a pilot cross-sectional study to explore people’s values and preferences towards meat consumption in the face of cancer risk. Methods and analysis: The mixed-method pilot study included a quantitative questionnaire followed by qualitative evaluation to explore the dietary habits of 32 meat eaters, their reasons for eating meat, and willingness to change their meat consumption when faced with a potential risk reduction of cancer over a lifetime based on a systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis. We recruited a convenience sample of participants from two Canadian provinces: Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. This project was approved by the Research Ethics Board for Health Sciences research at Dalhousie University, Canada. Results: The average weekly consumption of red meat was 3.4 servings and the average weekly consumption of processed meat was 3 servings. The determinants that influenced meat intake were similar for both red and processed meat. Taste, cost, and family preferences were the three most commonly cited factors impacting red meat intake. Taste, cost, and (lack of) cooking time were the three most commonly cited factors impacting processed meat intake. None of the participants were willing to eliminate red or processed meat from their diet. About half of participants were willing to potentially reduce their meat consumption, with one third definitely willing to reduce their consumption. Strengths and limitations: This study is the first that we are aware of to share data with participants on the association of red meat and processed meat consumption and the risk of cancer mortality and cancer incidence, including the certainty of evidence for the risk reduction. The limitations of this study include its small sample size and its limited geographic sampling. Conclusions: When presented explicit information about the small uncertain cancer risk associated with red and processed meat consumption, study participants were unwilling to eliminate meat, while about one-third were willing to reduce their meat intake.
