Modular AUV system with integrated real-time water quality analysis
This paper describes the concept, the technical implementation and the practical application of a miniaturized sensor system integrated into an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for real-time acquisition of water quality parameters. The main application field of the presented system is the analysis of the discharge of nitrates into Norwegian fjords near aqua farms. The presented system was developed within the research project SALMON (Sea Water Quality Monitoring and Management) over a three-year period. The development of the sensor system for water quality parameters represented a significant challenge for the research group, as it was to be integrated in the payload unit of the autonomous underwater vehicle in compliance with the underwater environmental conditions. The German company -4H- JENA engineering GmbH (4HJE), with experience in optical in situ-detection of nutrients, designed and built the measurement system. As a carrier platform, the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) “CWolf” from Fraunhofer-Institut für Optronik, Systemtechnik und Bildauswertung - Institutsteil Angewandte Systemtechnik (IOSB-AST) modified to an AUV was deployed. The concept presented illustrates how the measurement system can be integrated easily into the vehicle with a minimum of hard- and software technical interfaces.
Comparative Analysis of One Health Policies in Asia for Exploring Opportunities for British Columbia in Canada
In response to emerging challenges that intersect humans, animals, and environments, there is growing international exigent need to adopt ‘One Health’ approaches. While One Health efforts are emerging in British Columbia in Canada, there are still challenges to overcome in the adoption of a One Health approach in policymaking. We conducted a comparative analysis of One Health policies in Asia, specifically, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, and Thailand, which have well-established and sophisticated One Health approaches, to determine good practices in the implementation of One Health that could be considered for adoption in British Columbia. We conducted a literature review and scan of public-facing One Health websites, strategic action plans, and health databases, complemented by 13 semi-structured interviews with researchers, educators, service providers, human and animal health experts, and policymakers in our chosen Asian jurisdictions and British Columbia. While there was diversity in the One Health approaches taken by four jurisdictions, three key characteristics were present in policymaking processes in all of them: a national One Health strategic action plan, inter-ministerial coordination, and flexibility in the working relationships of public servants. One Health presents an opportunity for British Columbia to take a novel approach to public health policymaking, the one that is more holistic and effective at addressing shared health challenges.
Comparison of Cooled and Uncooled IR Sensors by Means of Signal-to-Noise Ratio for NDT Diagnostics of Aerospace Grade Composites
This work aims to address the effectiveness and challenges of non-destructive testing (NDT) by active infrared thermography (IRT) for the inspection of aerospace-grade composite samples and seeks to compare uncooled and cooled thermal cameras using the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as a performance parameter. It focuses on locating impact damages and optimising the results using several signal processing techniques. The work successfully compares both types of cameras using seven different SNR definitions, to understand if a lower-resolution uncooled IR camera can achieve an acceptable NDT standard. Due to most uncooled cameras being small, lightweight, and cheap, they are more accessible to use on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The concept of using a UAV for NDT on a composite wing is explored, and the UAV is also tracked using a localisation system to observe the exact movement in millimetres and how it affects the thermal data. It was observed that an NDT UAV can access difficult areas and, therefore, can be suggested for significant reduction of time and cost.
Study Protocol for an Online Questionnaire Survey on Symptoms/Signs, Protective Measures, Level of Awareness and Perception Regarding COVID-19 Outbreak among Dentists. A Global Survey
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have developed preparedness and prevention checklists for healthcare professionals regarding the containment of COVID-19. The aim of the present protocol is to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak among dentists in different countries where various prevalence of the epidemic has been reported. Several research groups around the world were contacted by the central management team. The online anonymous survey will be conducted on a convenience sample of dentists working both in national health systems and in private or public clinics. In each country/area, a high (~5–20%) proportion of dentists working there will be invited to participate. The questionnaire, developed and standardized previously in Italy, has four domains: (1) personal data; (2) symptoms/signs relative to COVID-19; (3) working conditions and PPE (personal protective equipment) adopted after the infection’s outbreak; (4) knowledge and self-perceived risk of infection. The methodology of this international survey will include translation, pilot testing, and semantic adjustment of the questionnaire. The data will be entered on an Excel spreadsheet and quality checked. Completely anonymous data analyses will be performed by the central management team. This survey will give an insight into the dental profession during COVID-19 pandemic globally.
Removing Critical Gaps in Chemical Test Methods by Developing New Assays for the Identification of Thyroid Hormone System-Disrupting Chemicals—The ATHENA Project
The test methods that currently exist for the identification of thyroid hormone system-disrupting chemicals are woefully inadequate. There are currently no internationally validated in vitro assays, and test methods that can capture the consequences of diminished or enhanced thyroid hormone action on the developing brain are missing entirely. These gaps put the public at risk and risk assessors in a difficult position. Decisions about the status of chemicals as thyroid hormone system disruptors currently are based on inadequate toxicity data. The ATHENA project (Assays for the identification of Thyroid Hormone axis-disrupting chemicals: Elaborating Novel Assessment strategies) has been conceived to address these gaps. The project will develop new test methods for the disruption of thyroid hormone transport across biological barriers such as the blood–brain and blood–placenta barriers. It will also devise methods for the disruption of the downstream effects on the brain. ATHENA will deliver a testing strategy based on those elements of the thyroid hormone system that, when disrupted, could have the greatest impact on diminished or enhanced thyroid hormone action and therefore should be targeted through effective testing. To further enhance the impact of the ATHENA test method developments, the project will develop concepts for better international collaboration and development in the area of thyroid hormone system disruptor identification and regulation.
The Impact of an Automation System Built with Jenkins on the Efficiency of Container-Based System Deployment
This paper evaluated deployment efficiency by comparing manual deployment with automated deployment through a CI/CD pipeline using Jenkins. This study involved moving from a manual deployment process to an automated system using Jenkins and experimenting with both deployment methods in a real-world environment. The results showed that the automated deployment system significantly reduced the deployment time compared to manual deployment and significantly reduced the error rate. Manual deployment required human intervention at each step, making it time-consuming and prone to mistakes, while automated deployment using Jenkins automated each step to ensure consistency and maximized time efficiency through parallel processing. Automated testing verified the stability of the code before deployment, minimizing errors. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of adopting a CI/CD pipeline and shows that automated systems can provide high efficiency in real-world production environments. It also highlights the importance of security measures to prevent sensitive information leakage during CI/CD, suggesting the use of secrecy management tools and environment variables and limiting access rights. This research will contribute to exploring the applicability of CI/CD pipelines in different environments and, in doing so, validate the universality of automated systems.
Cultivating Health in All Policies Mindsets: An Ongoing Journey to Integrate Health and Housing in Georgia
This project report explores the use of a Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach by the Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC) to integrate health perspectives into affordable housing policy and practice in Georgia. It focuses on five interconnected projects from over a decade-long collaboration to illustrate how the GHPC team started with a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) to seed cross-sector partnerships and then sustained them through subsequent collaborations. These projects included comprehensive-, intermediate-, and rapid-scale HIAs, as well as direct collaborations on housing development funding applications and a multidisciplinary research study on public housing renovations. This paper documents how HiAP tactics were applied across these projects to foster sustained collaboration and promote health equity. The insights offered highlight how the HiAP approach cultivated mindset shifts among public health practitioners, housing stakeholders, and policymakers, leading to a broader understanding of health and housing intersections. This synthesis contributes practical guidance for practitioners looking to advance the Vital Conditions for Health and Well-Being through housing policy initiatives.
Predictors of Problematic Smartphone Use: An Examination of the Integrative Pathways Model and the Role of Age, Gender, Impulsiveness, Excessive Reassurance Seeking, Extraversion, and Depression
Background: The progression of mobile phone technology has led to the development of multi-functional smartphones providing access to features such as social media, e-mail, and videos alongside the basic functions of a mobile phone. Increasing amounts of research has explored the potential addictive nature of smartphones to develop a theoretical framework that describes personality factors related to problematic use. The present study examined the Integrative Pathways Model and the effect of age, gender, impulsiveness, excessive reassurance seeking, extraversion, and depression on problematic smartphone use. Method: A total of 147 smartphone users (mean age = 30.96, SD = 12.97, 69.4% female) completed an online survey comprising of measures of problematic smartphone use, excessive reassurance seeking, extraversion, depression, and impulsiveness. Results: Age, impulsiveness, excessive reassurance seeking, and depression were all significantly related to problematic smartphone use, however extraversion was not significantly related. Furthermore, age and impulsiveness were significant independent predictors of problematic smartphone use. No gender differences were found. Conclusions: The findings presented several factors that predict problematic smartphone use, implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
Integrative Strategy of Testing Systems for Identification of Endocrine Disruptors Inducing Metabolic Disorders—An Introduction to the OBERON Project
Exposure to chemical substances that can produce endocrine disrupting effects represents one of the most critical public health threats nowadays. In line with the regulatory framework implemented within the European Union (EU) to reduce the levels of endocrine disruptors (EDs) for consumers, new and effective methods for ED testing are needed. The OBERON project will build an integrated testing strategy (ITS) to detect ED-related metabolic disorders by developing, improving and validating a battery of test systems. It will be based on the concept of an integrated approach for testing and assessment (IATA). OBERON will combine (1) experimental methods (in vitro, e.g., using 2D and 3D human-derived cells and tissues, and in vivo, i.e., using zebrafish at different stages), (2) high throughput omics technologies, (3) epidemiology and human biomonitoring studies and (4) advanced computational models (in silico and systems biology) on functional endpoints related to metabolism. Such interdisciplinary framework will help in deciphering EDs based on a mechanistic understanding of toxicity by providing and making available more effective alternative test methods relevant for human health that are in line with regulatory needs. Data generated in OBERON will also allow the development of novel adverse outcome pathways (AOPs). The assays will be pre-validated in order to select the test systems that will show acceptable performance in terms of relevance for the second step of the validation process, i.e., the inter-laboratory validation as ring tests. Therefore, the aim of the OBERON project is to support the organization for economic co-operation and development (OECD) conceptual framework for testing and assessment of single and/or mixture of EDs by developing specific assays not covered by the current tests, and to propose an IATA for ED-related metabolic disorder detection, which will be submitted to the Joint Research Center (JRC) and OECD community.
