β-Amylase Squirting Cucumber Between Immobilization, Kinetic Modeling and Application for Maltose Syrup Production
2024
A β-amylase extracted from
Ecballium elaterium
was purified on Q-Sepharose anion exchange chromatography and identified with molecular mass. A successful immobilization by adsorption onto a matrix of titanium dioxide-cellulose acetate butyrate and copolymer of acrylonitrile-acrylamide yielded 32.17%. Thermal stability approved that
Ecballium
β-amylase retained 89.21% of its initial activity (IA) after 180 min at 70 °C. A promoted catalytic activity was revealed at 70 °C and pH 7.5 with the immobilization procedure. The heterogeneous system based on the process of the substrate conversion degree (α) was studied kinetically via the modified Prout–Tompkins topochemical equation. α increased in accordance with the temperature increase up to 100 min of the reaction time. At 30 °C only 7.6% of optimum conversion degree was lost after 3 h. Power factor (χ) was equal to 1.16. An accomplished application of
Ecballium
β-amylase proved that it could be a good candidate to produce maltose syrup due to the highest maltose content of 52.9% after 8 h hydrolysis. It will be also very useful during manufacturing processes to minimize starch saccharification time even enzymatic liquefaction costs.

Effect of pH and Nanoparticle Capping Agents on Cr (III) Monitoring in Water: A Kinetic Way to Control the Parameters of Ultrasensitive Environmental Detectors
2020
In this work, we apply surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to study the kinetics of chromium Cr (III) detection in solution using EDTA and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). We examine for the first time the effect of pH and nanoparticles’ capping agent on the kinetic mechanism of Cr (III) detection using SERS temporal variations. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) and Raman shift variations show that the mechanism of detection is composed of two steps: a first one consisting of chemical coordination between Cr (III) and AgNPs that leads to exalted chemical and electromagnetic enhancement and the second one is an aggregation process with an important optical enhancement. The obtained results showed that the first step in the detection at lower pH was five times faster than in a basic medium using citrate capped silver nanoparticles (Cit-AgNPs). On the other hand, using a capping agent with dicarboxylate groups such as oxalate (Oxa-AgNPs) led to an important enhancement in SERS detection signal (more than 30 times) compared with Cit-AgNPs, although the detection kinetic’s mechanism was slower.

Tea geometrid Ectropis obliqua Prout (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is an important defoliator of the tree crop Camellia sinensis L. in China. The sex pheromones of E. obliqua have not been identified, but have potential importance relative to the biological control of this predator. In this study, the female sex pheromones of E. obliqua were identified and evaluated for use in the monitoring and mass trapping of this pest. The sex pheromone extracts were subjected to gas chromatography–electroantennographic detection and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The identified chemicals were synthesized and applied to wind-tunnel tests and field experiments. (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene and 6,7-epoxy-(Z,Z)-3,9-octadecadiene were determined to be the primary sex pheromones produced by the female E. obliqua; the latter elicits the strongest electroantennogram responses from male E. obliqua antennae. However, males did not respond to single components in the wind-tunnel tests. The results of a field-trapping experiment indicated that a 4:6 v/v blend of (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadeca-triene and 6,7-epoxy-(Z,Z)-3,9-octadecadiene was highly effective in attracting male moths.

Lydia Prout's Dreadfullest Thought
2015
What was Lydia Prout’s “dreadfullest thought”? This microhistory, which examines one of the earliest devotional journals penned by a woman in British North America, uncovers surprising connections between the “unruly passion” of a devoted mother who suffered repeated bereavements during the 1710s and the Satanic fantasies of Salem witchcraft confessors in 1692. An annotated edition of Prout’s journal is reproduced in the essay’s appendix.

Education for a Sustainable Future: Strategies of the New Hindu Religious Movements
2010
Increasingly, sustainability is conceived as a crisis of the human mind and the key challenge for pro-sustainability education is developing sufficient motivation in learners. The spiritual aspirations of religious communities contain sufficient motivational force, which may be deployed for effective sustainability education. This paper explores the approaches to sustainability and sustainability education of some internationally-oriented Hindu religious movements. These include the rural education initiatives of Gandhian Sarvodaya, which emphasizes non-harming, self-reliance and personal ethics, ISKCON, which emphasizes devotional service, P.R. Sarkar’s Ananda Marg, which emphasizes cooperative enterprise, the Tantric body re-imagined at the social scale, and Swami Vivekananda’s Sri Ramakrishna Order, which emphasizes karma yoga, spiritual development through service to the God in each human. It also describes the British Hindu contribution to the UNDP/ARC’s multi-faith sustainability initiative “Many Heavens, One Earth”; which is the “Bhumi Project” and its two main campaigns, Green Temples and Compassionate Living.

The value of vague ideas in the development of the periodic system of chemical elements
2021
The exploration of chemical periodicity over the past 250 years led to the development of the Periodic System of Elements and demonstrates the value of vague ideas that ignored early scientific anomalies and instead allowed for extended periods of normal science where new methodologies and concepts are developed. The basic chemical element provides this exploration with direction and explanation and has shown to be a central and historically adaptable concept for a theory of matter far from the reductionist frontier. This is explored in the histories of Prout’s hypothesis, Döbereiner Triads, element inversions necessary when ordering chemical elements by atomic weights, and van den Broeck’s ad-hoc proposal to switch to nuclear charges instead. The development of more accurate methods to determine atomic weights, Rayleigh and Ramsey’s gas separation and analytical techniques, Moseley’s X-ray spectroscopy to identify chemical elements, and more recent acceleratorbased cold fusion methods to create new elements at the end of the Periodic Table point to the importance of methodological development complementing conceptual advances. I propose to frame the crossover from physics to chemistry not as a loss of accuracy and precision but as an increased application of vague concepts such as similarity which permit classification. This approach provides epistemic flexibility to adapt to scientific anomalies and the continued growth of chemical compound space and rejects the Procrustean philosophy of reductionist physics. Furthermore, it establishes chemistry with its explanatory and operational autonomy epitomized by the periodic system of elements as a gateway to other experimental sciences.

William Prout: Early 19th Century Physician-Chemist
2003
In the early 19th century, the discoveries of new substances in the healthy and diseased body spawned a search for chemical explanations for physiologic phenomena to guide medical diagnosis and control therapy. William Prout’s work on the nature and treatment of diseases of the urinary organs established his reputation as one of Britain’s most distinguished physiological chemists. Prout was very skeptical of chemical remedies because of possible side effects, but he suggested iodine treatment for goiter. He emphasized that a satisfactory diet should include carbohydrates, fats, protein, and water. In 1824, he showed that the acid of the gastric juice was hydrochloric acid. Prout applied chemical methods and reasoning to physiology and was criticized for his view that the body’s vital functions could be explained by chemistry. His remedy for lack of progress in animal chemistry was for physiologists to become chemists. Prout stimulated much discussion on atomic theory by his hypothesis that the atomic weights of all chemical elements are whole-number multiples of the atomic weight of hydrogen and that the chemical elements were condensed from hydrogen atoms.

Environmental Energy Strategy: An Induced Linguistic Ordered Weighted Averaging Approach to a Sustainable Economy
2015
This paper is an effort to discuss sharing in both the international community and among our domestic audience to exact active consideration for producing a new economic model, for which advocates may be found among trading partner nations and political leadership. We have proposed a new model called optimized sustainment based on PROUT. A linchpin of the logic of our framework suggests that the American system of government and political system allows for such free thinking. Governments have the primary purpose to optimize return on national resources. They have certain instruments at their disposal to accomplish this among different “brands” of governance. While America has embraced individualism and free enterprise along with self-determination and private property ownership, these values may be preserved in many different forms. In our approach, it is our intention to preserve the best attributes and qualities of free enterprise and market driven regulation while addressing systemic weaknesses inherent in capitalism. To this end, we propose an algorithm and method to allow a panel of experts to determine which government solution is best given certain probabilities and impacts of risks to sustainability. We have implemented this ILOWA method as a hypothetical illustrative example.
