PUG-View: programmatic access to chemical annotations integrated in PubChem
PubChem is a chemical data repository that provides comprehensive information on various chemical entities. It contains a wealth of chemical information from hundreds of data sources. Programmatic access to this large amount of data provides researchers with new opportunities for data-intensive research. PubChem provides several programmatic access routes. One of these is PUG-View, which is a Representational State Transfer (REST)-style web service interface specialized for accessing annotation data contained in PubChem. The present paper describes various aspects of PUG-View, including the scope of data accessible through PUG-View, the syntax for formulating a PUG-View request URL, the difference of PUG-View from other web service interfaces in PubChem, and its limitations and usage policies.
Puppies in Paris
Bingo and Rolly are the cutest pug puppies around! Children will love this Big Golden Book. It retells an episode of the new Disney Junior show Puppy Dog Pals in which the pups travel to France to get bread for their owner, Bob, to make his favorite breakfast: French toast!
Inovação e colaboração on-line na criação de software livre
Advances in information technologies have led to user-centered innovation of artifacts from cyber culture. This advent of capitalism causes the emergence of approaches that contemplate collective and immaterial production in force in open source software communities. From a post-structuralist perspective, 6 interviews, 2 videos and an online discussion list were analyzed to appreciate the process of building the hegemonic discourse from the logic of equivalence, difference and fantasy. It was found that the speeches of the developers symbolize a presence yet to come, with the particular demands diluted in an equivalence chain that encompasses the largest number of claims, and that there is an effort to create an incessant process of generating value by overcoming the community frontiers, continuously articulating stakeholders to access resources and generate joint solutions in the innovation process. Glycoscience data content in the NCBI Glycans and PubChem
Studying glycans and their functions in the body aids in the understanding of disease mechanisms and developing new treatments. This necessitates resources that provide comprehensive glycan data integrated with relevant information from other scientific fields such as genomics, genetics, proteomics, metabolomics, and chemistry. The present paper describes two resources at the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the NCBI Glycans and PubChem, which provide glycan-related information useful for the glycoscience research community. The NCBI Glycans ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/glycans/ ) is a dedicated website for glycobiology data content at NCBI and provides quick access to glycan-related information scattered across multiple NCBI databases as well as other information resources external to NCBI. Importantly, the NCBI Glycans hosts the official web page for the symbol nomenclature for glycans (SNFG), which is the standard graphical representation of glycan structures recommended for scientific publication. On the other hand, PubChem ( https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ) is a research-focused, large-scale public chemical database, containing a substantial number of glycan-containing records and is integrated with important glycoscience resources like GlyTouCan, GlyCosmos, and GlyGen. PubChem organizes glycan-related information within multiple data collections (i.e., Substance, Compound, Protein, Gene, Pathway, and Taxonomy) and provides various tools and services that allow users to access them both interactively through a web browser and programmatically through a REST-ful interface, including PUG-View. The NCBI Glycans and PubChem highlight glycan-related data and improve their accessibility, helping scientists exploit these data in their research. Graphical Abstract
The three little pugs and the big, bad cat
Three pugs set out to build homes strong enough to stop the big bad cat, who is not far behind them, from eating their treats.
Breed-specific values for vertebral heart score
This prospective study aims to establish reference ranges for vertebral heart score (VHS), vertebral left atrial size (VLAS), and radiographic left atrial dimension (RLAD) in pugs. The impact of clinical severity of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), gender, body condition score, and body weight on VHS, VLAS, and RLAD were investigated. Intra- and interobserver correlation was determined. Correlation of radiographic scores to echocardiographic left atrial dimension was inspected. Additionally, for VLAS and RLAD, correlation to VHS was examined. Additionally, an assessment of thoracic and vertebral malformations was performed. Forty-seven privately owned pugs underwent physical examination, echocardiography, and thoracic radiography to determine cardiac health. Thirty-two pugs were eligible for establishing reference ranges for VHS in right lateral radiographs, which was 11.25 ± 0.62 (95% range, 10.1-12.8). Reference ranges for VHS in left lateral, and for VLAS and RLAD in right lateral radiograph were determined in 30 pugs. The VHS in left lateral radiograph was 11.01 ± 0.70 (95% range, 9.4-12.6), VLAS was 1.96 ± 0.38 (95% range, 1.1-2.8), and RLAD was 1.59 ± 0.34 (95% range, 0.7-2.4). Clinical severity of BOAS did not show any impact on radiographic measurements. For VLAS, a significant correlation to VHS was detected by all observers. No other variables had a consistent influence on the radiographic scores given by all observers. Interobserver agreement was almost perfect for VHS (0.89 on right lateral and 0.91 on left lateral image), moderate for VLAS (0.49), and fair for RLAD (0.22). More than one third of the entire study population (18 of 47 pugs) showed at least one thoracic cavity or spine abnormality, often leading to considerable changes in vertebral body shape and size.
Mutations in the CYP27B1 gene cause vitamin D dependent rickets in pugs
Rickets is a disorder of bone development and can be the result of either dietary or genetic causes. Here, related pugs from 2 litters were included. Three pugs had clinical signs including, lameness, bone deformities, and dyspnea. One other pug was found dead. Radiographs of 2 affected pugs, 5 and 6 months old, showed generalized widening, and irregular margination of the physes of both the appendicular and the axial skeleton with generalized decrease in bone opacity and bulbous swelling of the costochondral junctions. Two pugs had low serum calcium and 1,25 (OH)2D3 concentrations. Test results further indicated secondary hyperparathyroidism with adequate concentrations of 25‐hydroxyvitamin D. Necropsy revealed tongue‐like projections of cartilage extending into the metaphysis consistent with rickets, loss of metaphyseal mineralization and lung pathology. Vitamin D‐dependent rickets was diagnosed. A truncating mutation in the 1α‐hydroxylase gene (CYP27B1) was identified by genome sequence analysis of the pugs with VDDR type 1A. Vitamin D‐dependent rickets type 1A can occur in young pugs, and if left untreated is a life‐threatening condition. Early medical intervention can reverse clinical signs and should be instituted as soon as possible.
