Nitrogen is a key limiting factor for crop growth, and improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is critical for achieving high crop yields. In this study, both culture-independent and culture-dependent approaches were employed to systematically analyze the community composition and functional traits of seed endophytic bacteria in rice varieties with contrasting NUE. The results revealed diverse endophytic bacterial communities across the four rice varieties, with Shannon indices ranging from 2.95 to 3.23. However, significant compositional differences were observed among varieties. Rare taxa accounted for over 51% of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in each variety and were the primary drivers of community diversity and differentiation. In contrast, core taxa (shared OTUs) were highly conserved across varieties, largely composed of abundant taxa (OTUs > 39%, total relative abundance > 93%), and occupied central positions in co-occurrence networks, thereby contributing to community stability. Five representative strains exhibited diverse plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits in vitro , including siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, and indole - 3 - acetic acid (IAA) synthesis. These functions were partially redundant, but individual strains exhibited distinct strengths, indicating functional complementarity. Inoculation experiments demonstrated that all strains improved rice growth, nitrogen accumulation, and NUE, with their effectiveness modulated by both strain identity and nitrogen availability. This study reveals rice seed endophytic bacteria as “natural microbial allies” that support host growth and adaptation under low-nitrogen conditions. These endophytes represent valuable microbial resources for the development of next-generation biofertilizers in sustainable agriculture.

Nelsonia goldmani Merriam, 1903 is a cricetid rodent commonly called Goldman's diminutive woodrat. It is a woodrat of medium size with grayish dorsal pelage; the characteristic long tail is covered with long hairs and ends with a black tip. Nelsonia goldmani is one of two species in the genus Nelsonia. It is endemic to the central-west highlands of Mexico, recorded in a few localities of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt at elevations from 2,000 to 3,100 m. It inhabits areas near rocky ravines, cliffs, and hillsides with coniferous, pine–oak, and cloud forests. Nelsonia goldmani is listed as “Endangered” (EN) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources due to its fragmented distribution and the decrease in the quality and extent of its habitat. Nelsonia goldmani Merriam, 1903 es un roedor cricétido nombrado comúnmente rata enana de Goldman. Es una rata de tamaño mediano con el pelaje dorsal grisáceo; su larga cola característica está cubierta con pelos largos que terminan en una punta negra. Nelsonia goldmani es una de las dos especies del género Nelsonia. Es endémico de las montañas del centro-oeste de México, registrado en pocas localidades de la Faja Volcánica Transmexicana a elevaciones de 2,000 a 3,100 m. Habita en áreas cercanas a barrancos rocosos, acantilados y laderas con bosques de coníferas pino–encino y bosque de niebla. Nelsonia goldmani es considerada como “En peligro” (EN) por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza y Recursos Naturales a causa de su distribución fragmentada y la disminución en la calidad y extensión de su hábitat.

For the satellite to ground data transmission in the space-based satellite network, the worst channel conditions shall be considered, that is, the link budget shall be carried out according to the lowest elevation angle and the farthest transmission distance. It is extremely urgent to make full use of the limited link power resources. An efficient adaptive data transmission method is proposed to make the satellite data transmission rate increase with the increase of elevation angle, so as to maximize the amount of data transmitted from the satellite transit window, the reliability and throughput of information transmission are improved. And the effectiveness of this method is verified by computer simulation.

Consumer acceptance and product development of sustainable, healthy, and tasty plant-based alternative products (PBAPs) are closely interlinked. However, information on consumer perceptions of the sensory profile of plant-based meat, cheese, and milk remains scarce. The study aimed to investigate German consumers’ (1) sensory evaluation of PBAPs and (2) consumers´ motivations and knowledge underlying the purchase of such products. This was analyzed in relation to different dietary styles of consumers (omnivore, flexitarian, vegetarian, vegan). A sample of 159 adults completed two tasks: first, a sensory test in which participants tasted and rated three different PBAPs in two consecutive sessions, and second, a questionnaire on consumption behavior, motivation, and knowledge. Results show few differences between nutrition styles in sensory evaluation of individual product attributes. However, overall liking was rated significantly higher by vegans than by omnivores. All dietary styles reported animal welfare and environmental aspects as the main motivations for consuming PBAPs. Most participants acknowledged that meat and cheese alternatives are highly processed foods and not a fad but are not automatically healthier or more environmentally friendly than their animal-based counterparts. Future research should focus on emerging product segments such as plant-based cheeses to better understand how consumers evaluate PBAPs.

Lessons from RatA: Why the Basics in Molecular Biology Are Still Crucial!

Since the first bacterial genomes were sequenced and annotated over 25 years ago, sequencing technologies have rapidly advanced in both speed and cost efficiency. To date, over two million annotated bacterial genomes have been deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. Yet, there are many genes with unknown functions and, furthermore, conflicting results have been published for many investigated genes. One example is the ratA (or pasT) gene from Escherichia coli (E. coli) K-12 strains. Initially identified as a ribosome-targeting toxin, later studies described RatA as the bacterial homolog of the mitochondrial Coq10 protein and, therefore, beneficial for E. coli cells during aerobic growth. This study shows that these conflicting results originated from a mis-annotation of the start codon in the genomic sequence. Overexpression of the ratA gene as currently annotated leads to the synthesis of two RatA protein variants, a toxic and a non-toxic one. This study further identifies the endogenous ratA promoter and shows that only the shorter, non-toxic variant of RatA is synthesized during different growth phases specifically under aerobic conditions. Our findings thereby not only solidify the role of RatA in E. coli, but also demonstrate the importance of first validating the basics of molecular biology when investigating a previously poorly described gene, even in times of advanced high-throughput techniques.

This book contains a wide range of information of huge complexity on rat behavior. The book has three objectives. The first objective is to present an introduction of rat behavior. In choosing the rat as the subject species, the book has made the assumption that this species will remain, as it has in the past, the primary subject used the laboratory investigations of behavior. The second objective is to describe the organization and complexity of rat behavior. The major theme emerging from many lines of research on rat behavior is that understanding the rules of behavioral organization will be central in understanding the structural basis of behavior. The third objective is to update, as much as is possible, previous compendiums of rat behavior. Behavioral neuroscience continues to be a diverse field of research in which there remain many competing experimental methods and hypotheses. The behavioral descriptions in this book are closely tied to the laboratory methods from which they were derived, thus allowing investigators to exploit both the behavior and the methods for their own research. The first part of the book includes sections on natural history, sensory systems, motor systems, regulatory systems, development and parental behavior, social behavior, cognitive functions, and models. The second section is comprised by the major tests used by scientists interested in each domain of behavior.
Corporate Control and Idiosyncratic Vision

This Article offers a novel theory of corporate control. It does so by shedding new light on corporate-ownership structures and challenging the prevailing model of controlling shareholders as essentially opportunistic actors who seek to reap private benefits at the expense of minority shareholders. Our core claim is that entrepreneurs value corporate control because it allows them to pursue their vision (i.e., any business strategy that the entrepreneur genuinely believes will produce an above-market rate of return) in the manner they see fit. We call the subjective value an entrepreneur attaches to her vision the entrepreneur's idiosyncratic vision. Our framework identifies a fundamental tradeoff, stemming from asymmetric information and differences of opinion, between the entrepreneur's pursuit of her idiosyncratic vision and investors' need for protection against agency costs. Entrepreneurs and investors address this inevitable conflict through different ownership structures, each with different allocations of control and cash-flow rights. Concentrated ownership, therefore, should not be viewed as an unalloyed evil. To the contrary, it creates value for controlling and minority shareholders alike. Our analysis shows that controlling shareholders hold a control block to increase the pie's size (pursue idiosyncratic vision) rather than to dictate the pie's distribution (consume private benefits). Importantly, when the entrepreneur's idiosyncratic vision is ultimately realized, the benefits will be distributed pro rata to all investors. Our framework provides important insights for investor protection and corporate law doctrine and policy. We argue that corporate law for publicly traded firms with controlling shareholders should balance the controller's need to secure her idiosyncratic vision against the minority's need for protection. While the existing corporate-law scholarship has focused solely on the protection of minority shareholders, we show that it is equally important to pay heed to the rights of the controlling shareholders.

Diaconal journey of the Dutch Reformed Church. The aim of this article is to look at the development of the deacon’s position in the Dutch Reformed Church of Africa by investigating the founding, development, and management of the deacon’s position in the church. It is not the purpose to investigate the deacon’s position from a Biblical exegetical point of view but rather to look at the historical development of structures such as the Algemene Diakensvergadering, Ondersteuningsraad whose name was later changed to RATA, the children’s homes which were later converted into the DPS homes and the old age homes which were restructured in the Ons Tuis Monument-tehuise. We shall attempt to look at the development of the deacon’s position, and also consider the developments that lead to the founding and phasing out of the deacons’ meetings, and Circuit deacons’ meeting, as well as the effect that had on the service delivery of deacons. A journey, therefore, examining the past along with the future. We shall take the lessons we have learned in the past and apply them to improve our endeavours in the future which have already commenced. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The article is intradisciplinary, since it combines different fields within Practical Theology, like, diaconate, ecclesiological studies, and family and youth ministry. It also attends to church history. It is intradisciplinary in its attention to social sciences, more specifically social work.

Severity of the Effects of Invasive Rats on Seabirds: A Global Review

Invasive rats are some of the largest contributors to seabird extinction and endangerment worldwide. We conducted a meta-analysis of studies on seabird-rat interactions to examine which seabird phylogenetic, morphological, behavioral, and life history characteristics affect their susceptibility to invasive rats and to identify which rat species have had the largest impact on seabird mortality. We examined 94 manuscripts that demonstrated rat effects on seabirds. All studies combined resulted in 115 independent rat-seabird interactions on 61 islands or island chains with 75 species of seabirds in 10 families affected. Seabirds in the family Hydrobatidae and other small, burrow-nesting seabirds were most affected by invasive rats. Laridae and other large, ground-nesting seabirds were the least vulnerable to rats. Of the 3 species of invasive rats, Rattus rattus had the largest mean impact on seabirds followed by R. norvegicus and R. exulans; nevertheless, these differences were not statistically significant. Our findings should help managers and conservation practitioners prioritize selection of islands for rat eradication based on seabird life history traits, develop testable hypotheses for seabird response to rat eradication, provide justification for rat eradication campaigns, and identify suitable levels of response and prevention measures to rat invasion. Assessment of the effects of rats on seabirds can be improved by data derived from additional experimental studies, with emphasis on understudied seabird families such as Sulidae, Phalacrocoracidae, Spheniscidae, Fregatidae, Pelecanoididae, Phaethontidae, and Diomedeidae and evaluation of rat impacts in tropical regions.

Textured soy protein with meat odor as an ingredient for improving the sensory quality of meat analog and soy burger

Even with the growing consumption of plant-based products, the consumption of soy-based products is still a limitation due to the off-flavor of soy. Thus, two studies were performed using textured soy protein (TSP) with meat odor as meat analog and as soy burger. TSP with meat odor was produced by adding thiamine (aroma precursor) to soy protein concentrate (SPC) before extrusion. Three TSP were used in each study: one without thiamine and two with thiamine but with different moisture contents of the SPC. TSP with thiamine did not affect technological or physical properties of the products. For meat analogs, the samples with thiamine showed greater odor acceptance and greater intensities of meat odor, burnt aftertaste, and aromatic in relation to the sample without thiamine, as well as lower intensity of soy odor. For soy burgers, the samples with thiamine had higher acceptances of odor and flavor and overall acceptance, and higher intensities of chicken odor and aromatic in comparison to the sample without thiamine, as well as lower intensity of soy/vegetable odor. The use of TSP with thiamine raises the sensory quality of meat analogue and soy burger, being an interesting alternative in obtaining soy-based products with lower soy odor.
