The network ROI
PurposeLeveraging social action theory, social network theory and the notion of network externality, the purpose of this paper is to model two different return on investment (ROI) measures: the networked ROI which captures the network effect originating from a social media investment, and the discrete ROI which focuses social media discrete returns from individual users.Design/methodology/approachA field experiment was set up over a period of three months to test the effects of two variants of an advertisement campaign (a social vs a discrete ad) on the modeled networked and discrete ROIs.FindingsThe authors find that emphasizing discrete user actions leads to lower network gains, but higher monetary returns while the social action emphasis produces higher network gains, but lower monetary returns. The study further suggests that social action focus is preferable for brand promotion and engagement, whereas the discrete action focus is suitable for boosting sales and website traffic.Practical implicationsSeveral potential implications for social media researchers and marketers are also discussed.Originality/valueThe authors for the first time showed that that the social media returns are derived not only from individual actions taken by the user (e.g. likes and shares) but also from users’ social interdependencies and the additional exposure that results from network effects.
The Acquisition of Position and Orientation of the Conveyor Belt Workpiece Based on the Inter Frame Difference in ROI in Camera Video
Conveyor belt transfer is a widely used transportation means in industry and agriculture, with the help of the robot arms the workpiece on the belt can be picked and placed, replacing human sorters for production lines work. The position and orientation of the workpiece are important for grabbing by the robot arms. The goal of the paper was to investigate the acquisition of the position and orientation of the conveyor belt workpiece by means of the camera video overhead looking down the belt. The proposed method is the inter frame difference in nature, using the conveyor belt background as the first frame, but the other frames were not used wholly as usually, only an ROI all around the conveyor belt in the camera video was chosen, and the inter frame difference was carried out in the ROI. The ROI was of the same width as that of the belt in the video which was known in advance, while the length of the ROI was arbitrary, so one pixel in the frame was scaled to the actual length conveniently. Every read frame behind the background was computed the difference with the background in such ROI, and the four vertexes coordinates of the rectangle workpiece image on the belt were obtained when it passed the ROI, and then the distance apart from the right belt boundary was calculated due to the proportional relation between the width of workpiece and that of the ROI. Two kind workpiece orientation on the belt toward the left and right were judged using the same obtained four vertexes coordinates by means of Euclidian length, and the tilt angle was calculated by arc tangent function in favour of two narrow sides of rectangle workpiece grab. The actual test showed that the method of obtaining the position and orientation of workpiece on the belt proposed in the paper could be realized correctly.
Theodahad : a Platonic king at the collapse of Ostrogothic Italy
\"Educated in Platonic philosophy rather than the military arts, the Ostrogothic king Theodahad was never meant to rule. His unexpected nomination as co-regent by his cousin Queen Amalasuintha plunged him into the intrigues of the Gothic court, and Theodahad soon conspired to assassinate the queen. But, once alone on the throne, his lack of political experience and military skill made him ineffective at best and dangerously incompetent at worst. Defeated by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, Theodahad was killed by his own subjects.
Crowning glories : Netherlandish realism and the French imagination during the reign of Louis XIV
\"Crowning Glories integrates Louis XIV's propaganda campaigns, the transmission of Northern art into France, and the rise of empiricism in the eighteenth century--three historical touchstones--to examine what it would have meant for France's elite to experience the arts in France simultaneously with Netherlandish realist painting. In an expansive study of cultural life under the Sun King, Harriet Stone considers the monarchy's elaborate palace decors, the court's official records, and the classical theatre alongside Northern images of daily life in private homes, urban markets, and country fields. Stone argues that Netherlandish art assumes an unobtrusive yet, for the history of ideas, surprisingly dramatic role within the flourishing of the arts, both visual and textual, in France during Louis XIV's reign. Netherlandish realist art represented thinking about knowledge that challenged the monarchy's hold on the French imagination, and its efforts to impose the king's portrait as an ideal and proof of his authority. As objects appreciated for their aesthetic and market value, Northern realist paintings assumed an uncontroversial place in French royal and elite collections. Flemish and Dutch still lifes, genre paintings, and cityscapes, however, were not merely accoutrements of power, acquisitions made by those with influence and money. Crowning Glories reveals how the empirical orientation of Netherlandish realism exposed French court society to a radically different mode of thought, one that would gain full expression in the Encyclopâedie of Diderot and d'Alembert.\"-- Provided by publisher.
Arrian
\"Arrian (Flavius Arrianus), of the period ca. AD 95-175, was a Greek historian and philosopher of Nicomedia in Bithynia. Both a Roman and an Athenian citizen, he was governor of the Roman province of Cappadocia 132-137, and repelled an invasion of the Alani in 134. He retired then to Athens (where he was archon in 148-149) and later to Nicomedia. Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander in seven books is the best account we have of Alexander's adult life. Indica, a description of India and of Nearchus's voyage therefrom, was to be a supplement. A student of Epictetus, Arrian took notes at his lectures and published them (in eight books of which we have four, The Discourses) and also the Encheiridion or Manual of Epictetus. Both works are available in the Loeb Epictetus edition.\"--Jacket
Harmonization of large MRI datasets for the analysis of brain imaging patterns throughout the lifespan
As medical imaging enters its information era and presents rapidly increasing needs for big data analytics, robust pooling and harmonization of imaging data across diverse cohorts with varying acquisition protocols have become critical. We describe a comprehensive effort that merges and harmonizes a large-scale dataset of 10,477 structural brain MRI scans from participants without a known neurological or psychiatric disorder from 18 different studies that represent geographic diversity. We use this dataset and multi-atlas-based image processing methods to obtain a hierarchical partition of the brain from larger anatomical regions to individual cortical and deep structures and derive age trends of brain structure through the lifespan (3–96 years old). Critically, we present and validate a methodology for harmonizing this pooled dataset in the presence of nonlinear age trends. We provide a web-based visualization interface to generate and present the resulting age trends, enabling future studies of brain structure to compare their data with this reference of brain development and aging, and to examine deviations from ranges, potentially related to disease. •Multi-site harmonization method that pools volumetric data from 18 studies, controlling for nonlinear age effects.•Resulting dataset covers ages 3 to 96 and used to derive age trends of brain structure through the lifespan.•Interactive visualization tool provided for exploring age trends and comparing new data.
