Last week, Britain's Prime Minister and her Home Secretary (Theresa May and Sajid Javid) used a Serious Youth Violence Summit, held at 10 Downing Street, to launch a new approach to violence. The answer to violence, they suggested, was to adopt “a public health approach”. Because “we cannot try to simply arrest our way out of this situation”. The idea of addressing violence less as a criminal justice issue and more as a matter of public health might seem attractive.

Health in the UK in a no-deal Brexit

On the same day, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, sent a letter to all National Health Service organisations assuring them that the supply of medicines would not be affected by a no-deal Brexit. The technical notices on blood and blood products, and on organs, tissues, and cells stated that the UK would adhere to EU safety and quality standards after March, 2019, and there was confirmation that the UK would continue to accept batch testing of medicines by EU nations. “In the event of a stand-alone regulator, it is inevitable that new medicines will come to the UK later”, said Mike Thompson, chief executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.
