Ransoming Russians from Tatars: Justification and Practice
2020
The early modern Russian government and Russian Orthodox Church identified as one of their main duties the ransoming of Russian Christians from Muslim Tatar captors. The process of ransoming could be an involved one with negotiations being carried on by different agents and by the potential ransomees themselves. Different amounts of ransom were paid on a sliding scale depending upon the ransomee's social status, gender, and age. One of our main sources for the justification of this practice was the Stoglav (100 Chapters) Church Council in 1551, which discussed the issue of ransom in some detail. The Law Code (Ulozhenie) of 1649 specifies the conditions and amounts to be paid to redeem captives. Church writers justified the ransoming of Christian captives of the Muslim Tatars by citing Scripture, and they also specified that the government should pay the ransom out of its own treasury.

Die Funktion des מַלְאָךְ in Hiob 33,23–24
2024
The function of מַלְאָךְ in Job 33:23–24. In his first speech in the Book of Job (Job 32:6b–33:33), Elihu addresses, among other things, the God-ordained upbringing of human beings (33:14–30). In addition to dreams and visions (33:15–18), persistent pain can also educate people (33:19–22). In describing this education, Elihu surprisingly mentions a מַלְאָךְ [messenger, angel] who appears and mediates between God and the person who is suffering (33:23–24). As this passage presents some difficulties on text-critical, grammatical, and semantic levels, the role of the מַלְאָךְ has been interpreted differently by commentators to date. This article deals with the question of what function the מַלְאָךְ takes on in Job 33:23–24. The aim is to offer a coherent solution to the textual difficulties and to define the role of the מַלְאָךְ in the educational process. Acknowledging that various possibilities can lead to different interpretations, the article presented here is that in this passage, an angel mediates between God and humans by instructing them about a godly way of life and interceding for them before God, so that they can be saved from imminent death.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implicationsThis article examines an aspect of the Book of Job that has received relatively little attention in Old Testament research. It thus contributes to the discussion about the significance of Elihu’s speeches in the book.

2023
Kidnapping for ransom is a serious organized crime and has the potential of transforming into other felonious offenses, such as physical violence, financial victimization, and murder. This paper examines the phenomenon of kidnapping in Nigeria with a view to exposing its implications on human security thereby projecting the trends if not nipped. This study was prompted by the rising incidence of kidnapping, and its attendant consequences. The study made use of documentary evidences of cases of kidnappings and use of descriptive qualitative method of data analysis to explain the phenomena of K4R in Nigeria. We adopted the queer ladder theory to explain the political economy dimensionof kidnapping that is motivated and sustained by the criminal quest for material accumulation. The paper amongst other findings observed that kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria is a lucrative organized crime. On the other hand, K4R is a chain of high-risk crime that involves threat to life, extortion, trauma, and fear of breach in negotiation. Therefore, the study suggests among other recommendations a whole of government approach to K4R and preparedness of security agencies.

Revered commander, maligned general : the life of Clarence Ransom Edwards, 1859-1931
Annotation Major General Clarence Ransom Edwards is a vital figure in American military history, yet his contribution to the U.S. efforts in World War I has often been ignored or presented in unflattering terms. Most accounts focus on the disagreements he had with General John J. Pershing, who dismissed Edwards from the command of the 26th (Yankee) Division just weeks before thewar's end. The notoriety of the Pershing incident has caused some to view Edwards as simply a political general with a controversial career. But Clarence Edwards, though often a divisive figure, was a greater man than that. A revered and admired officer whose men called him Daddy, Edwards attained an impressive forty-year career, one matched by few wartime leaders . Michael E. Shay presents a complete portrait of this notable American and his many merits inRevered Commander, Maligned General. This long-overdue first full-length biography of General Clarence Edwards opens with his earlyyears in Cleveland, Ohio and his turbulenttimes at West Point. The book details the crucial roles Edwards filled in staff and field commands for the Army before the outbreak of World War I in 1917: Adjutant-General with General Henry Ware Lawton in the Philippine-American War, first chief of the Bureau of Insular Affairs, and commander of U.S. forces in the Panama Canal Zone.Revered Commander, Maligned Generalfollows Edwards as he forms the famous Yankee Division and leads his men into France. The conflict between Edwards and Pershing is placed in context, illuminating the disputes that led to Edwards being relieved of command. This well-researched biography quotes a wealth of primary sources in recounting the life ofan important American, a man of loyalty and service who is largely misunderstood. Photographs of Edwards, his troops, and his kinmany from Edwards own collectioncomplement the narrative. In addition, several maps aid readers in following General Edwards as his career moves from the U.S. to Central America to Europe and back stateside. Shays portrayalof General Edwards finally provides a balancedaccount of this unique U.S. military leader.
