The effect of refining process on the physicochemical properties and micronutrients of rapeseed oils

Information on the physicochemical variability in rapeseed oil from different varieties during each refining process is lacking. Our purpose was to investigate the physicochemical properties, micronutrients and oxidative stability of the oil extracted from the five varieties of rapeseeds during their different stages of refining process. Increase in the acid value, peroxide value and p-anisidine value were detected in the refining, while content of tocopherols, sterols, β-carotene and phenols, which are regarded as important nutritional compounds diminished. Moreover, the loss rate of total phytosterols of all oils during neutralization (9.23-7.3%) and deodorization (9.97-8.27%) were higher than that of degumming (3.01-0.87%) and bleaching (2.75-1.18%). Deodorization affected total tocopherols contents the most, followed by bleaching, neutralization and degumming. There was a remarkable reduction in total content of phenol, β-carotene and oxygen radical absorbance of all oils during refining. The accumulated information can be used in looking for the optimum condition to meet the basic requirements for oil and minimize micronutrients losses so as to increase their market value.

The Effect of pH and Storage Temperature on the Stability of Emulsions Stabilized by Rapeseed Proteins

Rapeseed press cake (RPC), the by-product of rapeseed oil production, contains proteins with emulsifying properties, which can be used in food applications. Proteins from industrially produced RPC were extracted at pH 10.5 and precipitated at pH 3 (RPP3) and 6.5 (RPP6.5). Emulsions were formulated at three different pHs (pH 3, 4.5, and 6) with soy lecithin as control, and were stored for six months at either 4 °C or 30 °C. Zeta potential and droplet size distribution were analyzed prior to incubation, and emulsion stability was assessed over time by a Turbiscan instrument. Soy lecithin had significantly larger zeta potential (−49 mV to 66 mV) than rapeseed protein (−19 mV to 20 mV). Rapeseed protein stabilized emulsions with smaller droplets at pH close to neutral, whereas soy lecithin was more efficient at lower pHs. Emulsions stabilized by rapeseed protein had higher stability during storage compared to emulsions prepared by soy lecithin. Precipitation pH during the protein extraction process had a strong impact on the emulsion stability. RPP3 stabilized emulsions with higher stability in pHs close to neutral, whereas the opposite was found for RPP6.5, which stabilized more stable emulsions in acidic conditions. Rapeseed proteins recovered from cold-pressed RPC could be a suitable natural emulsifier and precipitation pH can be used to monitor the stability in emulsions with different pHs.

Protein rich meal is a valuable co-product of canola/rapeseed oil extraction. Seed storage proteins that include cruciferin (11S) and napin (2S) dominate the protein complement of canola while oleosins, lipid transfer proteins and other minor proteins of non-storage nature are also found. Although oil-free canola meal contains 36–40% protein on a dry weight basis, non-protein components including fibre, polymeric phenolics, phytates and sinapine, etc. of the seed coat and cellular components make protein less suitable for food use. Separation of canola protein from non-protein components is a technical challenge but necessary to obtain full nutritional and functional potential of protein. Process conditions of raw material and protein preparation are critical of nutritional and functional value of the final protein product. The storage proteins of canola can satisfy many nutritional and functional requirements for food applications. Protein macromolecules of canola also provide functionalities required in applications beyond edible uses; there exists substantial potential as a source of plant protein and a renewable biopolymer. Available information at present is mostly based on the protein products that can be obtained as mixtures of storage protein types and other chemical constituents of the seed; therefore, full potential of canola storage proteins is yet to be revealed.

Rapeseed (Brassica napus): Processing, Utilization, and Genetic Improvement

Brassica napus L. is a vegetable oil crop, commonly known as rapeseed (or canola). It is widely used as a source of oil and protein for food and industrial applications, but also as a remedy, and in a field of attraction or as an ornament due to its diverse flower colors. Every part of rapeseed is useful, even the waste, which could be used to feed animals, or recycled. In this review, the use of rapeseed in these applications is presented, starting with the preparation of oil and protein from the seeds, before their release in the market, to the utilization of natural unprocessed rapeseed. Progress in rapeseed exploitation for food, remedy, energy source, and industrial applications are analyzed to show variability in diverse findings, to provide insights and progressive descriptions of rapeseed usage to other scholars. Moreover, advancements in breeding for rapeseed improvement were described. In the future, strategies could be developed or improved to avoid or decrease crop losses, but also to increase interest in propagating the valuable traits of rapeseed.

Effect of co-application of Trichoderma spp. with organic composts on plant growth enhancement, soil enzymes and fungal community in soil

The application of Trichoderma spp. has the potential to reduce not only mineral fertilizer use in agriculture but also improve soil health through increased soil biological activity. Trichoderma spp. have shown potential as bio-control agents and plant growth promoting ability, but little attention has been paid to the effect of Trichoderma spp. inoculation on nutrient availability and the soil microbiome. In this study, we evaluated the effect of Trichoderma spp. inoculation on nitrogen mineralization and quantified soil enzymatic activities along with plant growth promotion potential. The influence of Trichoderma spp. and organic amendments on the soil fungal community was also investigated. For this purpose, pots and incubation experiment was carried out, and seven treatments were set as follows; poultry compost (PC), poultry compost + RW309 (PCT), cattle compost (CC), cattle compost + RW309 (CCT), rapeseed oil cake (OC), inorganic fertilizer (N) and only soil (S) were set as control. We evaluated that Trichoderma sp. RW309 produced indole-3-acetic acid, which suggested that it could contribute to plant growth enhancement during early plant growth. Inoculation of RW309 with organic materials stimulated nitrogen mineralization and increased soil phosphatase activity. Furthermore, RW309 altered the fungal community in rhizosphere soil. However, cattle compost was a more suitable culture medium for RW309 than poultry compost in terms of nitrogen mineralization, soil enzyme activity, and growth of RW309. In conclusion, Trichoderma sp. RW309 could be considered for use as a bioorganic fertilizer in combination with organic compost to minimize the use of mineral fertilizers.

In this study, the effect of temperature (140, 160, 180 °C) and roasting time (5, 10, 15 min) on the bioactive compound content (canolol, tocopherol and plastochromanol-8) of cold-pressed oil from yellow-seeded rapeseed lines of different colors was investigated. Roasting increased the peroxide value in the seed oils compared to the oils from the control samples. However, roasting did not affect the acid values of the oils, which were 1.15–1.47 and 1.30–1.40 mg KOH/g, for line PN1 03/1i/14 (yellow seeds) and line PN1 563/1i/14 (brown seeds), respectively. In this study, the seeds of line PN1 03/1i/14 were characterized by different changes in canolol content during roasting than the seeds of PN1 563/1i/14. There was a 90-fold increase in canolol for the line PN1 03/1i/14 (768.26 µg/g) and a 46-fold increase for the line PN1 563/1i/14 (576.43 µg/g). Changes in tocopherol and PC-8 contents were also observed. There was an increase in the contents of γ-T and PC-8 in the oils obtained from the seeds roasted at 180 °C for 10 and 15 min. γ-T content increased by 17–18% after 15 min of roasting, whereas the PC-8 content increased twofold.

Dissection of the genetic architecture of three seed‐quality traits and consequences for breeding in Brassica napus

Summary
Genome‐wide association studies (GWASs) combining high‐throughput genome resequencing and phenotyping can accelerate the dissection of genetic architecture and identification of genes for plant complex traits. In this study, we developed a rapeseed genomic variation map consisting of 4 542 011 SNPs and 628 666 INDELs. GWAS was performed for three seed‐quality traits, including erucic acid content (EAC), glucosinolate content (GSC) and seed oil content (SOC) using 3.82 million polymorphisms in an association panel. Six, 49 and 17 loci were detected to be associated with EAC, GSC and SOC in multiple environments, respectively. The mean total contribution of these loci in each environment was 94.1% for EAC and 87.9% for GSC, notably higher than that for SOC (40.1%). A high correlation was observed between phenotypic variance and number of favourable alleles for associated loci, which will contribute to breeding improvement by pyramiding these loci. Furthermore, candidate genes were detected underlying associated loci, based on functional polymorphisms in gene regions where sequence variation was found to correlate with phenotypic variation. Our approach was validated by detection of well‐characterized FAE1 genes at each of two major loci for EAC on chromosomes A8 and C3, along with MYB28 genes at each of three major loci for GSC on chromosomes A9, C2 and C9. Four novel candidate genes were detected by correlation between GSC and SOC and observed sequence variation, respectively. This study provides insights into the genetic architecture of three seed‐quality traits, which would be useful for genetic improvement of B. napus.

The reported study concerns the introduction of renewable raw materials into the formulation of rigid polyurethane foams in the quest for the sustainable development of polymer composites. In this study, rigid polyurethane foam composites were prepared using 75 wt.% of rapeseed oil-based polyol and 15 parts per hundred parts of polyol (php) of natural fillers such as chokeberry pomace, raspberry seeds, as well as hazelnut and walnut shells. The influence of the used raw materials on the foaming process, structure, and properties of foams was investigated using a FOAMAT analyzer and a wide selection of characterization techniques. The introduction of renewable raw materials limited reactivity of the system, which reduced maximum temperature of the foaming process. Moreover, foams prepared using renewable raw materials were characterized by a more regular cell structure, a higher share of closed cells, lower apparent density, lower compressive strength and glass transition temperature, low friability (<2%), low water absorption (<1%), high dimensional stability (<±0.5%) and increased thermal stability. The proper selection and preparation of the renewable raw materials and the rational development of the polyurethane recipe composition allow for the preparation of environmentally-friendly foam products with beneficial application properties considering the demands of the circular economy in the synthesis of rigid foams.

The experience of solving the world's environmental problems from the use of diesel engines allowed us to develop numerous ways to solve them, including the transfer to work on alternative fuels. The article presents the classification of alternative fuels. The article discusses the use of biofuel for the diesel engine. The use of alternative biofuels with different chemical composition and local conditions leads to the distinctive performance of the diesel engine. Therefore, for the scientific representation of the actual picture of the power and economic indicators of the diesel engine, experimental studies were conducted when it was operated on methanol and methyl ether of rapeseed oil. According to the results of laboratory and bench studies of load working processes of a diesel engine running on methanol and methyl ether of rapeseed oil, important information about hourly and specific fuel consumption, filling coefficients and excess air, effective efficiency and exhaust gas temperature were obtained. At the same time dependences of influence of modes of operation of the diesel engine on characteristics of power and economic indicators are established and their numerical values are defined. The presented research performance and economic performance of diesel engine demonstrate the applicability of methanol and methyl ester of rapeseed oil as an alternative bio-fuel is not only to improve the excellent service standard and performance indicators, but also to reduce the toxicity and smoke opacity of the exhaust gases, since alcohol, with its more simple structure and small size of molecules is one of the determining factors for a more \"clean burning\" fuel.
