The ends of life : roads to fulfilment in early modern England
How should we live? That question was no less urgent for English men and women who lived between the early sixteenth and late eighteenth centuries than for this book's readers. Keith Thomas's masterly exploration of the ways in which people sought to lead fulfilling lives in those centuries between the beginning of the Reformation and the heyday of the Enlightenment illuminates the central values of the period, while casting incidental light on some of the perennial problems of human existence. Consideration of the origins of the modern ideal of human fulfilment and of obstacles to its realization in the early modern period frames an investigation that ranges from work, wealth, and possessions to the pleasures of friendship, family, and sociability. Trust, knowledge sharing, and innovative work behavior: empirical evidence from Poland
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to assess the effects of two types of trust (vertical and horizontal trust) on knowledge sharing (knowledge donating and knowledge collecting) and the impact of knowledge sharing on innovative work behavior (idea generation and idea realization). The study also explores the mediating role of knowledge sharing.Design/methodology/approachPartial least squares path modeling and data collected from 252 participants at one large Polish capital group were used to test the research hypotheses.FindingsThe results showed that both vertical trust and horizontal trust are positively related to knowledge donating and knowledge collecting. Contrary to knowledge collecting, knowledge donating is significantly related to idea generation, which is highly correlated with idea realization. There is no direct relation between knowledge sharing behavior and idea realization. Knowledge donating mediates the relationship between vertical trust and idea generation.Research limitations/implicationsSelf-reports and the cross-sectional nature of the data collection are the main limitations of this study.Practical implicationsThe results allow managers to better understand what factors and processes contribute to greater employee innovativeness.Originality/valueTo the best of the author's knowledge, the study is the first to examine the relationships among vertical trust, horizontal trust, knowledge donating, knowledge collecting, idea generation and idea realization in an integrated way. This paper answered the questions (1) which type of trust is more important for knowledge sharing, and (2) which type of knowledge sharing behavior is more important for innovative work behavior. This paper investigated whether differences in the strength of relationships between constructs are significant.

Hankel Matrix Rank Minimization with Applications to System Identification and Realization
We introduce a flexible optimization framework for nuclear norm minimization of matrices with linear structure, including Hankel, Toeplitz, and moment structures and catalog applications from diverse fields under this framework. We discuss various first-order methods for solving the resulting optimization problem, including alternating direction methods of multipliers, proximal point algorithms, and gradient projection methods. We perform computational experiments to compare these methods on system identification problems and system realization problems. For the system identification problem, the gradient projection method (accelerated by Nesterov's extrapolation techniques) and the proximal point algorithm usually outperform other first-order methods in terms of CPU time on both real and simulated data, for small and large regularization parameters, respectively, while for the system realization problem, the alternating direction method of multipliers, as applied to a certain primal reformulation, usually outperforms other first-order methods in terms of CPU time. We also study the convergence of the proximal alternating direction methods of multipliers used in this paper. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

The Significance of Calvin’s Theology of Mission and its realization in the sixteenth century for twenty-first century church mission in Indonesia
This article aims to examine the theological themes of mission in the works of John Calvin and their implementation in the 16th century, as well as their significance to the mission of the present-day church. This purpose contradicts the criticism of modern mission experts who consider Calvin to have made no contribution to the mission movement and even to have weakenedit. However, an in-depth study of Calvin’s works, using a theological-historical method, reveals the meaning of mission, the Bible as a missional book, the mission of the Trinity, the holistic mission of the kingdom of God, the church as the sole agent of mission, the missionary function of the apostles, holistic mission, and inclusive mission to the nations. All of these were implemented by Calvin in Geneva in the 16th century, continued and contextualised by Calvinist mission experts and missionaries in many countries, including Indonesia, in the 21st century.

Exchanging knowledge in the TMT to realize more innovation opportunities: what can family firms do?
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the influence that family firms’ top management team (TMT) behavior and characteristics exert on their innovation opportunity realization.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected through a survey addressed to a representative sample of Italian firms. The analyzed sample consists of 237 firms, 120 of which are family firms. A series of ordinary least squares models were used to test the four hypotheses.
Findings
Family firms realize fewer innovation opportunities than non-family firms. This result is fully mediated by the knowledge exchange in the TMT as follows: in family firms, the TMT exchanges less knowledge than in non-family firms, which drives their lower realization of innovation opportunities. In family firms TMT, the increase in the non-family members positively influences the TMT knowledge exchange, but only when the time the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) spends in searching for innovation opportunities outside the firm is low. The more the CEO search increases, the more this positive influence decreases, up to the point it becomes negative.
Research limitations/implications
The study contributes to the literature on innovation, knowledge management and organizational design in family firms. Nevertheless, data were collected at a single point in time and in a single country.
Practical implications
The study suggests family firms on how to foster the realization of innovation opportunities. A greater TMT knowledge exchange allows to realize more innovation opportunities and the TMT characteristics emerged as the drivers of this TMT knowledge exchange. As such, family firms should examine the interaction of their TMT composition in terms of non-family and family members with the effort that the CEO deploys to search for innovation opportunities outside the firm.
Originality/value
Empirical investigation of the link between family ownership, absorptive capacity and innovation performance by considering TMT behavior and characteristics.
