Squirrel Nation
A wide-ranging meditation on belonging and citizenship through the story of two squirrel species in Britain. Squirrel Nation is a history of Britain's two species of squirrel over the past two hundred years: the much-loved, though rare, red squirrel and the less-desirable, though more populous, grey squirrel. A common resident of British gardens and parks, the grey squirrel was introduced from North America in the late nineteenth century and remains something of a foreign interloper. By examining this species' rapid spread across Britain, Peter Coates explores timely issues of belonging, nationalism, and citizenship in Britain today. Ultimately, though people are swift to draw distinctions between British squirrels and squirrels in Britain, Squirrel Nation shows that Britain's two squirrel species have much more in common than at first appears.
Breeding Dispersal in Female North American Red Squirrels
Although natal dispersal has received considerable attention from animal ecologists, the causes and consequences of breeding dispersal have remained largely unexplored. We used telemetry, direct observation, and long-term mark-recapture (9 yr) to study breeding dispersal in the North American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) at Kluane, Yukon, Canada. We recorded the postbreeding behavior (keep the territory, share it with juveniles, or bequeath it to juveniles) of mothers from 485 litters, and monitored the fates of eight cohorts of weaned juveniles (680 individuals). The proportion of mothers that bequeathed their territory to one of their offspring was roughly one-third of that keeping or sharing it. Breeding dispersal was a recurrent phenomenon that characterized a fraction of the population of reproductive females every year. Dispersing females did not improve the quality of their breeding environment. In contrast, by leaving their territory, mothers allowed some offspring to stay on the natal site, which increased juvenile survival. Breeding dispersal by female red squirrels was thus a form of parental investment. Dispersing females were older than others, had higher numbers of juveniles at weaning, and moved their breeding sites more frequently after reproducing when food availability was high. These patterns are consistent with the major predictions of parental investment theories. We detected no difference in survivorship or future reproduction between dispersing and resident mothers. Juvenile males dispersed more often than females, but not farther. The sex of offspring did not influence whether mothers dispersed or not. Although we showed that breeding dispersal can have major impacts on the dynamics of squirrel populations, the relative implications of natal and breeding dispersal for the genetic structure and demography of populations and the social evolution of species remain unknown.
Boom and bust
Aim Spatiotemporal variation in resource availability is a strong driver of animal distributions. In the northern hardwood and boreal forests of the northeastern United States, tree mast events provide resource pulses that drive the population dynamics of small mammals, including the American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), a primary songbird nest predator. This study sought to determine whether mast availability ameliorates their abiotic limits, enabling red squirrel elevational distributions to temporarily expand and negatively impact high‐elevation songbirds. Location Northeastern United States. Methods We used two independent datasets to evaluate our hypotheses. First, we fit a dynamic occupancy model using data from camera trap surveys to evaluate red squirrel distributional responses to pulses in the tree mast. We also assessed population responses using systematic auditory surveys analysed with an open‐population binomial mixture model. Further, we used modelled red squirrel abundance in nest‐survival models to evaluate whether their abundance is correlated with the daily nest survival of three songbird species. Results The tree mast provided a critical resource pulse that resulted in a two‐fold increase in the annual elevational distribution of red squirrels. The elevational distribution of red squirrels ranged from a minimum of ~450 m (range: 663–1145 m asl) following two consecutive years without a masting event to a maximum of over 1000 m (range: 443–1545 m asl) after a large mast event. The daily nest survival of three songbird species tended to decline with an increase in the abundance of red squirrels. Main Conclusions Tree mast is a central biological phenomenon in many temperate and boreal forests. This study reveals how this resource pulse results in range changes in a small mammal that is both a seed and bird predator, as well as prey for many carnivores. Thus, understanding this phenomenon can inform the conservation and management of northern forests, including breeding songbirds.
Are nest boxes a useful tool in regional red squirrel conservation programs?
We examined temporal (annual and seasonal) patterns of nest box occupancy by red squirrels in a coniferous habitat in Great Britain. The effects of woodland habitat variation, and competition from nesting Great tits were investigated over a nine year period using basic linear models with a binomial error structure. Box use varied seasonally with peaks in the summer and autumn and was positively associated with the abundance of larch. 60 nest boxes yielded nine red squirrel carcasses, and although a small number, the material would be useful in genetic and viral infection studies. Nest boxes were not favoured by breeding female red squirrels and only three litters were found. We highlight the value and limitation of nest boxes as a tool in the applied conservation of red squirrels, and make recommendations for future areas of research on this topic.
Future Range Dynamics Suggest Increasing Threats of Grey Squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) against Red Squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) in Europe: A Perspective on Climatic Suitability
Interactions between the introduced gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and the native red squirrel (S. vulgaris) play an important role in the ecological equilibrium of European forest ecosystems. However, the range dynamics of the grey squirrel and red squirrel under future climate change scenarios remain unknown. The present study examined the range dynamics of grey squirrels and red squirrels in Europe and their range overlap now and in the future based on climate change. Under the most optimistic climate change scenario (SSP126), expansion of the grey squirrel’s range was mainly predicted in Germany, France, Croatia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. Under the most pessimistic climate change scenario (SSP585), expansion of the grey squirrel’s range was predicted in vast and scattered regions. Additionally, France, Italy, and Germany were overlapping ranges for the grey squirrel and red squirrel in the future under the SSP126 scenario but not under the current conditions, suggesting that there will be new regions where grey squirrels may threaten red squirrels in the future under SSP126. The range overlaps under the SSP585 scenario but not under the current conditions were vast and scattered, suggesting that there will be new regions in the future where grey squirrel may displace red squirrels under SSP585. Despite considerable variation, we detected expansions in the grey squirrel and red squirrel ranges and an increase in overlapping ranges between grey squirrels and red squirrels in the future. Therefore, our prediction suggests increasing threats of grey squirrels toward red squirrels in Europe in the future under climate change, which may impact the ecological equilibrium of European forest ecosystems.
Stress activity is not predictive of coping style in North American red squirrels
Individuals vary in their behavioral and physiological responses to environmental changes. These behavioral responses are often described as “coping styles” along a proactive-reactive continuum. Studies in laboratory populations often, but not always, find that behavioral responses and physiological responses to stressors covary, where more proactive (more aggressive and active) individuals have a lower physiological stress response, specifically as measured by hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. These studies support the possibility of hormonal pleiotropy underlying the presentation of behaviors that make up the proactive-reactive phenotype. However, recent research in wild populations is equivocal, with some studies reporting the same pattern as found in many controlled laboratory studies, whereas others do not. We tested the hypothesis that physiological and behavioral stress responses are correlated in wild adult North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). We used fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) as a non-invasive, integrated estimate of circulating glucocorticoids for our measurement of HPA axis activity. We found that FCM concentrations were not correlated with three measures of behavioral coping styles (activity, aggression, and docility) among individuals. This does not support the hypothesis that hormonal pleiotropy underlies a proactive-reactive continuum of coping styles. Instead, our results support the “two-tier” hypothesis that behavioral and physiological stress responses are independent and uncorrelated traits among individuals in wild populations that experience naturally varying environments rather than controlled environments. If also found in other studies, this may alter our predictions about the evolutionary consequences of behavioral and endocrine coping styles in free-living animals.
Traditional Knowledge and Conservation Priorities of Eurasian Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in Finland
The Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) has played an important role in Finnish traditional culture and livelihoods since pre‐historic times. This paper analyzes the current role, status, and trends of the red squirrel using both available scientific evidence and testimonies from oral historians who were immersed in Finland's boreal hunting societies during the mid‐1900s. The convergence of observations points to the decline of this iconic mammal of northern forests and increased migration to urban habitats. Red squirrels are not currently seen as being of great relevance to conservation efforts, despite their central role in spreading seeds and in boreal predator–prey food chains. If the animal is lost from Finland's remaining boreal timber forests, their absence may have consequences that are not yet understood. This article contains previously unavailable cultural knowledge of the Eurasian red squirrel, directly curated by knowledge holders. It presents an important nexus of different ways of knowing. Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) has played an important role in Finnish traditional culture and livelihoods from pre‐historic times. Convergence of observations points to the case where the iconic mammal of the northern forests is in decline and migrating to the urban habitats, with a number of important consequences. If the animal is lost from the remaining boreal timber forest in Finland, their absence may have consequences that are not yet understood.
Trophic Dynamics of the Boreal Forests of the Kluane Region
The trophic dynamics of the Yukon boreal forest have been under investigation at the Kluane Lake Research Station since 1973. We monitored and conducted experiments on the major species in this ecosystem, except the large mammals (for logistic reasons). The central problem has been to determine the causes of the 9–10 year cycle of snowshoe hares, and to achieve this we carried out several large-scale experiments manipulating food supplies, predator pressure, and soil nutrient availability to test hypotheses that food, predation, or habitat quality regulate populations. The hare cycle is driven top-down by predators, and most hares die because they are killed by predators. Predators also cause stress in female hares, and the stress response seems to be responsible for the loss of reproductive potential in the decline and low phases of the hare cycle. Many of the specialist predators and some herbivores in this ecosystem fluctuate with the hare cycle. Arctic ground squirrels do, but red squirrels do not, being linked closely to white spruce seed masting years. Small rodents fluctuate in numbers in two patterns. Red-backed voles and four species of Microtus voles have a 3–4 year cycle that seems to be driven by food supplies and social behaviour. Deer mice, in contrast, have fluctuated dramatically in the 38 years we have monitored them, but not cyclically. White spruce seed production varies with temperature and rainfall, but was not affected by adding nutrients in fertilizer. Global warming and reduced hare browsing in the last 20 years have helped to increase the abundance of shrubs in these forests. It will be challenging to predict how this system will change as climatic warming proceeds, because even closely related species in the same trophic level respond differently to perturbations. We recommend continued monitoring of the major species in these boreal forests. La dynamique trophique de la forêt boréale du Yukon fait l'objet d'une étude à la station de recherche du lac Kluane depuis 1973. Nous avons fait des expériences et surveillé les espèces importantes de cet écosystème, sauf en ce qui a trait aux principaux mammifères (pour des raisons de logistique). Le problème central a consisté à déterminer les causes du cycle de 9 à 10 ans du lièvre d'Amérique. Pour ce faire, nous avons effectué plusieurs expériences à grande échelle dans le cadre desquelles nous avons manipulé les disponibilités alimentaires, la pression exercée par les prédateurs et la disponibilité en nutriments dans le sol afin de mettre à l'épreuve les hypothèses selon lesquelles la nourriture, la prédation ou la qualité de l'habitat régularisent les populations. Le cycle du lièvre est dicté par les prédateurs de haut en bas, et la plupart des lièvres meurent parce qu'ils sont tués par les prédateurs. Par ailleurs, les prédateurs sont une source de stress chez les lièvres femelles, et la réaction au stress semble responsable de la perte de capacité de reproduction dans la phase du déclin et la phase basse du cycle du lièvre. Grand nombre des prédateurs spécialistes et certains herbivores de cet écosystème fluctuent en fonction du cycle du lièvre. C'est le cas du spermophile arctique, mais ce n'est pas le cas de l'écureuil roux, car il est étroitement lié aux années de paisson de graines d'épinette blanche. Le nombre de petits rongeurs fluctue en fonction de deux modèles. Le campagnol à dos roux et quatre espèces de campagnols Microtus ont un cycle de trois à quatre ans qui semble dicté par les disponibilités alimentaires et le comportement social, tandis que la souris sylvestre a connu d'énormes fluctuations pendant les 38 années qui ont fait l'objet d'une surveillance, sans toutefois afficher de cycles. La production de graines d'épinette blanche varie en fonction des températures et des chutes de pluie, mais n'a pas été influencée par l'ajout de nutriments au fertilisant. Le réchauffement planétaire et le broutage réduit des lièvres ces 20 dernières années ont aidé à accroître l’abondance d’arbustes dans ces forêts. Il sera difficile de prévoir comment ce système changera au fur et à mesure du réchauffement climatique, car même les espèces étroitement liées du même niveau trophique réagissent aux perturbations de manière différente. Nous recommandons la surveillance continue des principales espèces de ces forêts boréales.
Patterns in tree squirrel co-occurrence vary with responses to local land cover in US cities
Urbanization has important effects on the distribution and persistence of wildlife communities. Urbanization may alter not just the distributions of individual species, but also co-occurrence patterns and thus the potential for interspecific interactions (e.g., competition, predation) that structure wildlife communities. Little is currently known about how urbanization alters species co-occurrence or how these changes shape urban species assemblages. Using tree squirrels as a model functional group, we quantified how urbanization alters species occurrence and co-occurrence patterns to shape species assemblages, and how these effects vary within and among cities. We constructed a multi-species, multi-season occupancy model to identify relationships between tree squirrel occupancy and co-occurrence and local land and tree canopy cover and examined variation in these relationships within and among nine US cities. Species’ responses to canopy cover were highly variable among, but less variable within cities, suggesting that even common urban wildlife species may respond differently to urban intensity in different landscape contexts. Species co-occurrence was also highly variable among cities and weakly related to canopy cover within a city. These findings provide important evidence that both environmental attributes and species interactions shape urban wildlife communities. Important for management and conservation, they suggest that tree-canopy cover can particularly support forest species co-occurrence and that managing urban forests to provide high canopy cover could contribute to the diversity of urban wildlife communities in forested ecoregions.
