Faith schools, tolerance and diversity : exploring the influence of education on students' attitudes of tolerance
\"Faith schools constitute approximately one third of all state-maintained schools and two fifths of the independent schools in England. Nevertheless, they have historically been, and remain, controversial. In the current social climate, questions have been raised about the ability of faith schools to promote Community Cohesion and, included within that, their ability to promote tolerance. This book explores one aspect of the debate by examining the effect that faith schools have on their students' attitudes of tolerance. Perceptions of religious Israeli high school principals regarding school climate after the COVID-19 pandemic, and its connection to their management style
PurposeThe global COVID-19 crisis posed many managerial and leadership challenges for principals. More specifically, after the crisis passed noticeable changes in school climate manifested and affected principal management style. The present study examined perceptions of principals regarding school climate and its impact on management style. The research literature clearly affirms the profound impact of school climate in terms of the relationship between students and school leaders. The study focused solely on religious high schools because, in Israel, the negative impact of the pandemic was most marked there.Design/methodology/approachThe study was qualitative in nature, and included semi-structured interviews with 10 religious school principals in Israel. Study participants were asked about the existing school climate and their management style in light of the COVID-19 period.FindingsThis study indicated that positive school climate and interpersonal relationships between principals and students were affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Study participants reported that principals had to work arduously in the post-COVID-19 period to restore and improve positive school climate and consequently their management style also needed altering. Specifically, restoring open lines of communication and a sense of belonging as the main components of the school climate were the main foci of principal work. The principals' management style had to be more open and inclusive to restore a sense of belonging and security among students.Originality/valueThe study highlights the importance of an open and inclusive management style to restore positive school climate after crises.

Strong Religion in a Secular Society: The Case of Orthodox Reformed Schools in The Netherlands
In the Netherlands, state and religious schools are equally financed by the government. Parents are free to choose a school that optimally fits their moral values as well as their idea of a good education. As a result, there is a huge variety of schools, which include those orthodox Reformed schools that form part of the so-called Bible Belt culture. We elaborate on the complex relation between this religious culture and liberal, secular society by focusing on education. Occasionally, there is severe criticism of schools based on a strong religious identity (so-called strong religious schools), especially when it comes to their allegedly inadequate contribution to citizenship education. In order to add a historical perspective and a reflection on the arguments to the debate, our central research question is: ‘How can the founding and existence of orthodox Reformed schools in the Dutch liberal and secular society be explained and justified?’ Starting with a historical explanation of why the orthodox Reformed founded their own schools in the 1920s, we elaborate on philosophical arguments that can justify the existence of orthodox Reformed schools in a liberal, secular society.

A narrative review of child-friendly school implementation in religious-based education: a transformative perspective from Indonesia, Asia, and the global context
The integration of Child-Friendly School (CFS) principles in religious-based education remains a global challenge, particularly in Indonesia and other Asian countries where faith strongly influences schooling practices. This study aims to analyze the successes and barriers of CFS implementation within the framework of transformative education. Employing a narrative review method, it synthesizes scholarly works, policy documents, and regional reports from Asia and global contexts. Findings reveal that aligning CFS with religious and cultural values fosters inclusive, ethical, and participatory learning environments. By offering actionable recommendations for educator training, stakeholder collaboration, and curriculum reform, the study advances the discourse on transformative education in religious settings. However, challenges persist in policy alignment and teacher training. The study contributes practical insights for advancing faith-based transformative education worldwide.
