Fierce Climate, Sacred Ground
2015
With three roads and a population of just over 500 people,
Shishmaref, Alaska seems like an unlikely center of the climate
change debate. But the island, home to Iñupiaq Eskimos who still
live off subsistence harvesting, is falling into the sea, and
climate change is, at least in part, to blame. While countries
sputter and stall over taking environmental action, Shishmaref is
out of time.
Publications from the New York Times to
Esquire have covered this disappearing village, yet few
have taken the time to truly show the community and the two
millennia of traditions at risk. In Fierce Climate, Sacred
Ground , Elizabeth Marino brings Shishmaref into sharp focus as
a place where people in a close-knit, determined community are
confronting the realities of our changing planet every day. She
shows how physical dangers challenge lives, while the stress and
uncertainty challenge culture and identity. Marino also draws on
Shishmaref's experiences to show how disasters and the outcomes of
climate change often fall heaviest on those already burdened with
other social risks and often to communities who have contributed
least to the problem. Stirring and sobering, Fierce Climate,
Sacred Ground proves that the consequences of unchecked
climate change are anything but theoretical.

The Clementine atlas of the moon
2012,2013
The highly successful Clementine mission gave scientists their first global look at the Moon. Based on information gathered from this mission combined with data from recent missions, this unique atlas contains 144 maps covering the entire lunar surface, along with colour plates showing the Moon's composition and physical properties. The first part of the atlas describes the origin and geological evolution of the Moon and gives a brief history of lunar science and exploration, while the second features double-page spreads consisting of Clementine images paired with newly created shaded-relief maps generated from LROC topography data. This edition has been fully revised and extended to cover the armada of new missions that have launched since 2004. With one of the most complete and up-to-date lunar nomenclature databases, this is an indispensable reference for professional planetary and space scientists, amateur astronomers, and lunar enthusiasts.
Map geographic information road extraction method based on generative adversarial network and U-Net
2025
In today’s rapidly developing remote sensing technology, accurately extracting geographic information from maps is crucial for many key areas such as urban planning, environmental monitoring, and traffic management. However, due to the complexity and variability of remote sensing images, effectively extracting road information from multi-scale geographic images remains a technical challenge. Therefore, the study innovatively proposes a fusion model for panchromatic and multi-spectral images and a fusion map geographic information extraction model from the perspectives of image fusion and road segmentation. Structural similarity and spatial correlation coefficients are crucial for assessing the effectiveness of model image fusion. The experimental results show that in the panchromatic and multispectral remote sensing image datasets, the structural similarity of the model reached 0.023, which was very close to the target value of 0, indicating that the model had excellent image fusion ability. Meanwhile, the spatial correlation coefficient value was also as high as 0.99, close to the target value of 1, further confirming the efficiency of the model in image fusion. Compared with other methods, the designed method had significant advantages in maintaining the continuity of road structure, which could more accurately identify and reproduce the continuity of roads and reduce errors in the extraction process. In summary, the research results are of great significance to improve the accuracy and efficiency of remote sensing image analysis, which not only can provide strong technical support for the application in the above related fields, but also can contribute to the further development and application of remote sensing technology in geographic information extraction.

An Overview of Coastline Extraction from Remote Sensing Data
2023
The coastal zone represents a unique interface between land and sea, and addressing the ecological crisis it faces is of global significance. One of the most fundamental and effective measures is to extract the coastline’s location on a large scale, dynamically, and accurately. Remote sensing technology has been widely employed in coastline extraction due to its temporal, spatial, and sensor diversity advantages. Substantial progress has been made in coastline extraction with diversifying data types and information extraction methods. This paper focuses on discussing the research progress related to data sources and extraction methods for remote sensing-based coastline extraction. We summarize the suitability of data and some extraction algorithms for several specific coastline types, including rocky coastlines, sandy coastlines, muddy coastlines, biological coastlines, and artificial coastlines. We also discuss the significant challenges and prospects of coastline dataset construction, remotely sensed data selection, and the applicability of the extraction method. In particular, we propose the idea of extracting coastlines based on the coastline scene knowledge map (CSKG) semantic segmentation method. This review serves as a comprehensive reference for future development and research pertaining to coastal exploitation and management.

Design and Implementation of Marine Automatic Target Recognition System Based on Visible Remote Sensing Images
2020
Gao, X.B., 2020. Design and implementation of marine automatic target recognition system based on visible remote sensing images. In: Bai, X. and Zhou, H. (eds.), Advances in Water Resources, Environmental Protection, and Sustainable Development. Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 115, pp. 277-279. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. In the process of visible light remote sensing imaging, different sea surface wave conditions have different reflection ability to illumination, which makes the brightness, contrast and other information of visible light remote sensing images have great changes. Marine ship target recognition is an important application of image processing in remote sensing field. Based on pixel-level fusion of visible and infrared bispectral images, this paper extracts features from fusion results, and recognizes targets in images according to the matching of target image features and template image features. Comprehensive utilization of image preprocessing, image smoothing and anti-cloud interference algorithms can quickly and accurately realize ship target detection under the complex background of land and sea. The experimental results show that the algorithm is effective both in physical mechanism and in actual image effect.
