Presentation: A Quartet on Ottoman High-culture Poetic Style
The analysis and assessment of style involves examination of a writer's choice of words, his figures of speech, the devices (rhetorical and otherwise), the shape of his sentences (whether they be loose or periodic), the shape of his paragraphs - indeed, of every conceivable aspect of his language and the way in which he uses it.2 And then comes the blow, for Cuddon continues: \"Style defies complete analysis or definition. The present dossier containing a quartet of studies on aspects of style illustrates how varied the themes and approaches can and are bound to be. Modern Primitive (2020–Ongoing): Ink and Pencil Crayon on Paper
Osman presents his Modern Primitive (2020), a new series of drawings. The drawings features colorful portraits of individuals who are both known and unknown to us. Using familiar cultural tropes like \"Karens/Kevins,\" \"Anti-Maskers,\" and \";Anti-Vaxxers\" as character studies, which are also invoked in/by each individual work's title, Modern Primitive offers intimate glimpses of what living together as well as apart looks like and means to/for different people in a/our shared world(s) yet with diverse and distinct realities.
Autistic Adults May Be Erroneously Perceived as Deceptive and Lacking Credibility
We hypothesized that autistic adults may be erroneously judged as deceptive or lacking credibility due to demonstrating unexpected and atypical behaviors. Thirty autistic and 29 neurotypical individuals participated in video-recorded interviews, and we measured their demonstration of gaze aversion, repetitive body movements, literal interpretation of figurative language, poor reciprocity, and flat affect. Participants (N = 1410) viewed one of these videos and rated their perception of the individual’s truthfulness or credibility. The hypothesis was partially supported, with autistic individuals perceived as more deceptive and less credible than neurotypical individuals when telling the truth. However, this relationship was not influenced by the presence of any of the target behaviors, but instead, by the individual’s overall presentation.
Miron Costin.
“Wii Will Rock You!” The Use and Effect of Figurative Language in Consumer Reviews of Hedonic and Utilitarian Consumption
Figurative language in advertising affects product attitudes positively across contexts. In contrast, the present research demonstrates that the use and effectiveness of figurative language in consumer-generated content is context specific, because of conversational norms unique to this form of communication. Study 1 shows that consumer reviews containing more figurative language lead to more favorable attitudes in hedonic, but not utilitarian, consumption contexts, and that conversational norms about figurative language govern this effect. Study 2 reveals that reading a review containing figurative language increases choice of hedonic over utilitarian options. Finally, via analysis of online consumer reviews and a lab experiment, studies 3 and 4 indicate that consumers use figurative language more when sharing experiences about hedonic than utilitarian consumption, and that review extremity influences figurative language use only in reviews of hedonic consumption. The studies highlight the critical role of conversational norms in interpreting and creating user-generated content.
The Donora Smog Revisited: 70 Years After the Event That Inspired the Clean Air Act
At a storefront museum approximately 25 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a sign reads, “Clean Air Started Here.” This is not hyperbole. At the end of October 1948, the communities of Donora and Webster in Pennsylvania were visited by a smog that changed the face of environmental protection in the United States. Conservative estimates showed that 20 individuals died, while an additional 5900—43% of the population of Donora—were affected by the smog. This event led to the first large-scale epidemiological investigation of an environmental health disaster in the United States. Questions remain about the long-term effects of the smog, because higher rates of cardiovascular disease and cancer than were expected were observed in the region in the decade following the smog. Recent work has suggested that environmental contaminants from a bygone era in Donora might have an impact even today. In addition, reports regarding air pollution have indicated that levels of pollutants similar to those estimated to have occurred in Donora are currently present in some rapidly industrializing regions of China and India. Seventy years after the smog, this event still resonates.
Hyperbole or Reality? Investor Response to Extreme Language in Earnings Conference Calls
We develop a dictionary of linguistic extremity in earnings conference calls, a setting where managers have considerable latitude in the language they use, to study the role of extreme language in corporate reporting. Controlling for tone (positive versus negative) of language, we document that when managers use more extreme words in earnings conference calls, trading volume around the call increases and stock prices react more strongly. In addition, both effects are more pronounced for firms with weaker information environments. Linguistic extremity also affects analyst opinions and contains information about a firm's future operating performance. As such, our results provide evidence that markets are influenced not just by what managers say, but also how they say it, with extreme language playing an important role in communicating reality and not merely reflecting hyperbole.
The analysis of the domain of tenors and vehicles in Fereidoon Tavalloli’s poem
\"Simile\" as one of the figures of speech and a type of semantic deviation, promotes the form and the aspects of poetry and also creates a tender and artistic atmosphere in the poem. It makes the atmosphere of a poem more tangible for readers and due to this fact it makes the poem eloquent and attractive. “Fereidoon Tavalloli” knew this important matter and used it very well; in a way that among other semantic deviations, he has chosen simile two hundred and ten times. He used an abundance of sensory similes rather than the other kind of simile that shows his tender and extroverted soul. It is absorbing that his personal life is vividly noticeable in similes of his poems; however, his job as an archaeologist has no straight aspects. He regards the Baroque period and he might have a deal with the Oedipus complex. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this study concentrates on different kinds of simile and the domain of tenors and vehicles that had been used in Tavalloli’s poems. Also, this study can be a presentation of the poet's mind and sensation
