Rita Moreno : a memoir
\"In this luminous memoir, Rita Moreno shares her remarkable journey from impoverished Puerto Rican girl to Hollywood legend--and one of the few performers, and the only Hispanic, to win an Oscar, Grammy, Tony and two Emmys. Born Rosita Dolores Alverio in the idyll of Puerto Rico, Moreno, at age five, embarked on a harrowing sea voyage with her mother and wound up in the harsh barrios of the Bronx, where she discovered dancing, singing, and acting as ways to escape a tumultuous childhood. Making her Broadway debut by age thirteen--and moving on to Hollywood in its Golden Age just a few years later--she worked alongside such stars as Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, and Lana Turner. Rita, who was made over as the \"Latina Liz Taylor\" by MGM head Louis B. Mayer, became an instant sensation. From dancing with Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain to her Oscar-winning performance in West Side Story, she catapulted to fame--yet found herself repeatedly typecast as a Latina spitfire, a role she found almost impossible to elude. Here, for the first time, Rita reflects on her struggles to break through Hollywood's racial and sexual barriers. She explores the wounded little girl behind the glamorous façade--and what it took to find her place in the world. She talks candidly about her relationships with Elvis Presley and Howard Hughes, and the passionate romance with Marlon Brando that drove her to attempt suicide in his bed. And she reveals the secrets behind her \"perfect\" marriage and the incomparable joys of motherhood. Infused with Rita Moreno's astounding wit and deep insight, this memoir is the dazzling portrait of a stage and screen star who longed to become who she really is--and triumphed\"-- Provided by publisher.

Then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house: a woman named Serenna Izard\"--Back cover.
Seasonal Variation and Association of Heavy Metals in the Vital Organs of Edible Fishes from the River Jhelum in Punjab, Pakistan
The toxic effects of heavy metals are drastic, including accumulation. Fish species are important bio-indicators of heavy metal pollution in aquatic bodies. The current study aimed to assess the seasonal variation of heavy metals in the vital organs of mostly consumed fishes in River Jhelum, Pakistan. Samples of fish, including Wallago attu (Malhi), Rita rita (Khagga), and Mystus seenghala (Singhari), were collected from four different sites, i.e., Khushab, Muhammad Wala (M. Wala), 8.R.D and Rasool barrage during summer and winter seasons. Heavy metals such as iron (Fe), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co) and Cadmium (Cd) were estimated through acid digestion and spectrometric analysis. Results showed a significantly higher ( P  < 0.05) amount of these metals in the liver, followed by the kidneys of fish species. There were seasonal variations in the absorption of these metals as well. Cr (11.71) and Fe (58.66) were detected in higher amounts in Khagga which showed the greatest affinity for certain metals in some cases. In contrast, Singhari showed the greatest affinity to other metals in other cases. Comparative analysis revealed that there was a highly significant ( P  < 0.05) difference for the accumulation of almost all metals in both seasons and summer had the highest concentration of Cd, Pb, Co, Cr and Fe as compared to winter in all four sampling stations in the case of kidney and liver of all the three fishes. Elevated levels of heavy metals were detected in the summer due to increased temperature. Heavy metals found in the River Jhelum may demonstrate that metals can significantly affect the fish species.

Delta lady : a memoir
She inspired songs--Leon Russell wrote \"A Song for You\" and \"Delta Lady\" for her; Stephen Stills wrote \"Cherokee.\" She co-wrote songs--\"Superstar\" and, uncredited, the piano coda to \"Layla.\" She sang backup for Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, and Stills before finding fame as a solo artist with such hits as \"We're All Alone\" and \"(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.\" Following her from Lafayette, Tennessee, to her becoming one of the most sought-after rock vocalists in Los Angeles in the 1970's, Delta Lady chronicles Rita Coolidge's fascinating journey through the '60's and '70's pop-rock universe.
Mentorship, memory, and honor: Rita Levi-Montalcini’s legacy and the role of academic recognition in promoting women in science
The contemporary vignette highlights how the mentorship model exemplified by Rita Levi-Montalcini continues to foster scientific identity, confidence, and career progression, especially among women and minorities facing systemic barriers. Through a mixed-methods narrative approach, combining historical-biographical review, qualitative analysis of a contemporary mentee vignette, and bibliometric insights. Levi-Montalcini’s own experience under Giuseppe Levi’s mentorship demonstrated the critical psychosocial and instrumental support necessary to develop resilience and scientific rigor. This research highlights how mentorship by Giuseppe Levi shaped Levi-Montalcini’s scientific rigor and resilience, contributing to her Nobel Prize-winning discoveries. Similarly, modern mentorship and institutional honors serve to counteract stereotype threats and enhance retention by providing recognition through awards and leadership roles, reflecting Levi-Montalcini’s legacy of transforming private perseverance into a public authority. This study underscores that structured mentorship programs and transparent recognition systems, inspired by Levi-Montalcini’s trajectory, are essential for universities to promote inclusive excellence and empower emerging women scientists in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
Not So Well Attached
Faultfinding is the fault that Rita Felski's The Limits of Critique attributes to literary criticism. Faultfinding is also, of course, what Felski's book spends most of its time doing. Had it not abandoned itself so completely to faultfinding, its central insight might have led it to do more interesting things. (The fact that these more interesting things are already being done by much socially engaged criticism is one obvious weakness of her argument, which puffs itself up by expanding its range of targets so as to take in nearly the whole profession and then, sensing a challenge, steps back in mock horror so as to suggest, “No, of course, I didn't mean that !”) As an example of these alternative, nonfaultfinding versions of critique, the book might have tried to explore the reasons the humanities are as susceptible as they are to the holier-than-thou self-righteousness that Felski both accuses and, however reluctantly, also personifies.
Determination of heavy metals (Pb, Cr, As, Hg, and Cd) into the body organs of selected fish, water, sediment, and soil samples from Head Punjnad and Head Taunsa, Punjab, Pakistan
The present study was conducted on Head Punjnad (HP) and Head Taunsa (HT) to evaluate the contamination of Pb, Cr, As, Hg, and Cd in water, soil, sediment, fish as a whole and fish organs. Fish, water, soil and sediment samples were collected from different sites of HT and HP on a monthly basis for 8 months. Heavy metals in water, soil, and sediment were determined by a polarized Zeeman atomic absorption spectrophotometer and in fish and fish organs by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Contamination of Cd, Hg, and As was significantly (P<0.05) higher in water of HP as compared to HT, while Cr showed a non-significant (P>0.05) difference at HP and HT. Pb was significantly (P<0.05) higher in water of HT as compared to HP. In the case of soil, Cd, Hg, and Pb were higher at HT as compared to HP, while As and Cr were significantly (P<0.05) higher at HP as compared to HT. In sediment, contamination of Cd, Hg, and As were significantly (P<0.05) higher at HP as compared to HT, while the Cr difference was non-significant (P>0.05) but Pb showed a significantly (P<0.05) higher value at HT than HP.
