Japanese bicycles have long been at the forefront of both competitive and recreational cycling from top-flight racing bicycles ridden by champions in international competition to the most collectible custom frames on the fixed-gear scene. Selective State DOT Lane Width Standards and Guidelines to Reduce Speeds and Improve Safety

This research investigates the lane width standards and guidelines implemented by various State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance road safety. Lane width reduction is often perceived as a strategy to mitigate speed and improve safety. Still, its effectiveness and implications vary across different contexts, including regions, urban/rural settings, or other geometric design features. Drawing from interviews with five State DOTs and a review of their road design manuals, this study aims to identify suggested lane widths depending on the contexts, design exception process when narrowing or widening lane widths, and introduce representative before/after studies. The findings indicate that State DOTs tend to have lower recommended lane widths in urban areas than in rural areas. Moreover, lane width standards among these states vary due to several factors, including the geographical location of roadways (urban or rural areas), design or posted speeds, traffic volume, road classification, and geometric road design features. Design exceptions are required if the existing or proposed design element is incompatible with both AASHTO and department governing criteria. In conclusion, the findings will provide valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, transportation planners, and road engineers to inform optimal lane width and decision-making processes.

There are great uncertainties in road design parameters, and the traditional point numerical calculation results cannot reflect the complexity of the actual project well. Additionally, the calculation method of road design theory based on interval analysis is more difficult in the use of uncertain design parameters. In order to simplify the calculation process of the interval parameters in the road design theory, the asphalt pavement design is taken as the analysis object, and the permanent deformation of the asphalt mixture is simplified by combining the interval analysis theory. Considering the uncertainty of the design parameters, the data with boundaries but uncertain size are expressed in intervals, and then the interval calculation formula for the permanent deformation of the asphalt mixture is derived, and the interval results are obtained. In order to avoid the dependence of interval calculation on the computer code, according to the interval calculation rule, the interval calculation method with the upper and lower end point values as point operations is proposed. In order to overcome the contradiction between interval expansion results and engineering applications, by splitting the multi-interval variable formulas, the interval variable weights are reasonably given, and the synthesis of each single interval result realizes a simplified calculation based on interval variable weight assignment. The analysis results show that the interval calculation method based on the point operation rule is accurate and reliable, and the simplified method based on the interval variable weight assignment is effective and feasible. The simplified interval calculation method proposed in this paper provides a reference for the interval application of road design theory.

Energy efficient non-road hybrid electric vehicles : advanced modeling and control
Analyzing the main problems in the real-time control of parallel hybrid electric powertrains in non-road applications, which work in continuous high dynamic operation, this book gives practical insight in to how to maximize the energetic efficiency and drivability of such powertrains. The book addresses an energy management control structure, which considers all constraints of the physical powertrain and uses novel methodologies for the prediction of the future load requirements to optimize the controller output in terms of an entire work cycle of a non-road vehicle. The load prediction includes a methodology for short term loads as well as for an entire load cycle by means of a cycle detection. A maximization of the energetic efficiency can so be achieved, which is simultaneously a reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Readers will gain a deep insight into the necessary topics to be considered in designing an energy and battery management system for non-road vehicles and that only a combination of the management systems can significantly increase the performance of a controller.

He examines how both foreign and domestic actors, working at local, national, and transnational levels, helped determine how Mexico would build and finance its roadways.While Veracruz offered a radical model for regional construction that empowered agrarian communities, national consensus would solidify around policies championed by Nuevo León's political and commercial elites. PurposeThis paper investigates the interaction between vehicle dynamics parameters and road geometry during the passing process.Methodology The methodology is based on a realistic representation of the passing task with respect to roadway’s posted speed and the ability of the passing (examined) vehicle to perform such maneuvers. Regarding passing distance outputs, an existing vehicle dynamics model was utilized, where aiming to assess the model’s accuracy, instrumented field measurements were performed. The analytical model is computationally demanding. Therefore statistical models were worked out, in line with the German rural road design guidelines, to determine passing sight distances (PSDs) by arranging combinations of 4 critical vehicle—roadway parameters; namely, vehicle horsepower rates, variations between the passed vehicle’s speed and roadway’s posted speed, peak friction supply coefficients and grade values.Results The analysis revealed that the difference between the speed of the passed vehicle and the posted speed value, as well as certain interactions of the assessed parameters impact excessively PSD, especially for values below 20 km/h. The lognormal modelling approach for predicting PSDs was found efficient and may be useful to researchers and practitioners aiming to evaluate the interaction of the utilized road—vehicle parameters in terms of determining PSDs as well as passing zones.Conclusions Although more advanced communication between vehicles or between vehicles and road environment seems a prerequisite in order integrated guidance during passing maneuvers to be enabled, the present research consists an opening paradigm of how the passing process can be standardized and therefore deployed in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
