Chump
Kenneth Roberson: With a bad bill, this state representative from Punta Gorda rekindled doubts about Florida's advocacy program for residents in long-term care. Kenneth Roberson's legislation would scrap public meetings where ombudsmen field complaints and talk about problems they've observed in assisted-living facilities and nursing homes. Publicizing problems is one of the few tools ombudsmen have to pressure long-term care operators to improve conditions for their residents. Beware of lawmakers who push deregulation -- especially when the well-being of seniors is at stake.
