Local WWII vet subject of book; Son uses old letters, school report to piece together father's story
2002
The letters Singleton sent to his beloved young wife, Norma Jean, became the backbone for his biography, \"To Great Yoho and Back,\" written by his son, Robert Singleton Jr. [Robert Singleton Sr.] noticed a bulletin board advertisement at an English air base, and he volunteered as a \"toggalier,\" a bombardier position filled by an enlisted man, to get more missions and earn an earlier release from the service. Returning home to Norma was always his primary goal, he said. Both father and son share the love of flying. Robert Jr. participated in the ROTC program in college and was stationed at Arizona's Williams Air Force base for four years. Both enjoy flying private planes.

After 20 years, reclusive artist shows work again
2014
\"It was there where I jokingly say I painted myself into a corner, he said. \"I asked myself, Are you really painting what you want to paint?' As I started walking back to the studio, I said to myself, No, I'm not painting what I really want to paint.' \"I think that's what I want. I would say some of them are mystical, but they're certainly not religious in the true sense of dogma or something like that. But they certainly have - and I use this term carefully - but some sort of spiritual component to them. And that's not to get saccharine. They're not overly sweet. The best way I can put it is they're luminous. \"When I started back to work I think there was a major difference. Now when I'm painting I really want to communicate it's not so much about me, me, me. What I'm looking for is to convey a sense of peace in my work and a sense of reverence. So, I'm perhaps passing on in these new works 20 years of reflection about death and dying.

SAVING THE STONES 2 groups want to preserve artifacts at Queens Plaza site
2009
\"They are safe,\" said George Stamatiades, executive director of the Dutch Kills Civic Association. \"I went there and I viewed them. One is in a plywood crate and the other is covered with plywood sheets. They've been there 100 years and nothing has happened to them.\" \"There was no archeologist to oversee the project,\" [Robert Singleton] said. \"A contractor ripped one of the stones out of the sidewalk and put it in a crate as if it was to be shipped somewhere.\" \"We are in the process of engaging an archeological resources consultant to help us develop a longer-term plan to ensure their safety,\" she said. \"Eventually, the millstones are to be incorporated into the new public plaza to be constructed in the area.\"

edgefest is high on downsview
2008
Parks don't come cheap, but Downsview Park, a former airbase, is coming along gradually; 40,000 trees were recently planted on the property. \"We call it a pay-as-you-go park,\" quips [Robert Singleton], whose job is to alert potential users to Downsview's bonuses. It's right on the TTC line, he points out, but also located conveniently close to both the 401 and the 400 with \"ample\" parking. And contrary to Pope-related perception, the park does have more intimate surroundings than just that vast airfield in which to host concerts. Edgefest will be going down in a nine-acre lot adjacent to the Downsview administrative buildings, mere steps away from a bus stop.

Deputy finds no backup for arrest story
2005
Robert Singleton (ran Clearwater, Largo, North Pinellas, Pasco, City & State); was unclear on what agency employed Fresh.+ Cpl. James Jeffrey Fresh said the man grabbed him by the throat. That's why he had to arrest the man, Fresh said, though he was off duty that evening, April 16, and had drunk a few beers. But a month later, Fresh's \"grabbed me by the throat\" became more like \"felt something\" on my shoulder. And even this version of events wasn't corroborated by any of the witnesses, including his wife, who was in the car with him when it happened. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office notified Fresh last month they would not prosecute Robert Singleton, the 58-year-old Holiday man he arrested. Records released this week reveal a case that was anything but solid. Fresh, 36, arrested Singleton on charges of battery, a misdemeanor, and burglary, a felony. Inside Snookers Grill in Tarpon Springs, the pair had gotten into an argument about Fresh's treatment of a waitress. Outside, Fresh accused Singleton of reaching into his black convertible 2005 BMW to grab him by the neck. The burglary charge stemmed from the allegation that Singleton reached into the car. Fresh, who had not identified himself as a deputy during the argument, grabbed his badge from the trunk of his BMW, ran across the parking lot after Singleton and yelled for someone to call 911. Tarpon Springs police arrived. They then turned the case over to the Sheriff's Office because, they said, it was Fresh's arrest. This summer, the State Attorney's Office interviewed Fresh, who described the moment he says Singleton attacked him. A prosecutor took notes: \"He felt something on his shoulder. It was the defendant (Singleton) who reached in and was apparently poking him trying to confront him.\" Fresh's wife, Danielle Fresh, also was interviewed.
