The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended physicians screen women with a familial risk assessment tool if they have family history of breast, ovarian, tubal or peritoneal cancer or an ancestry associated with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. The recommendations mirror the 2013 USPSTF recommendations for screening, but more evidence has emerged since then, Owens noted. \"Since 2013, the validity of genetic testing for BRCA1/2 mutations has been established and the potential benefits and harms of previously reviewed interventions, such as risk-reducing medications and surgery, have been studied for longer follow-up periods,\" Owens and colleagues wrote. [...]although primary care clinicians are the ideal group to assess risk and make appropriate referrals for genetic counseling, it will be important to assess the feasibility of use of the recommended familial risk assessment tools among these busy clinicians, who already have many other demands and time restraints while in clinic. -
