Santa, classic cars, families light up San Bernardino
\"This tragedy shows why we need to come together,\" he said. \"That's what the volunteers and all of us are doing.\" In a 60-square-mile city where reliable transportation is not a given for all residents and where car culture runs deep, the heart of Wednesday's parade was in neighborhoods, where small clusters ran to meet the convoy of cars. Stretches included a family of two or three, then next door six or seven and a block a way a group of 15 or 20 yelling out \"Merry Christmas!\" \"We're looking forward to seeing many more smiling faces,\"[Alfred Rodriguez] said. \"That's what it's all about. The community and all of the smiling faces.\"

He's on fire to rebuild Owner of burned biz wants to start work now
\"I would love to rebuild,\" [Alfred Rodriguez] said as he stood in the falling snow outside the smoking husk of S&D Discount Furniture Warehouse in Melrose. \"I worked on the rebuilding of the Intervale station when that burned down,\" said Rodriguez, a member of the local community board, which was instrumental in persuading the MTA to reconsider a decision not to rebuild the station after it was burned in a botched robbery a decade ago. When the MTA said that it would cost too much to replace the station when it was torched in 1989, Rodriguez and other local business and civic leaders spearheaded a petition drive that helped get the MTA decision reversed.
San Bernardino Community Ho Ho Parade returns
\"I think it was just a hail mary, that God was saying you're trying to do something good, and we'll have it happen,\" organizer Deb Matley said of 2013's success. \"... You see these people rush out of their house to see the parade, and it's such a good feeling.\" \"I believe it was worth it because it's really, really important for the community, for the residents, and most of all for the children,\" [Alfred Rodriguez] said. \"A lot of children in San Bernardino - a lot of times they don't really have Christmas. A lot of people have stepped up their time and resources, so this year's going to be awesome.\" \"And you see people who are so grateful for it, and you're reaching areas of the city where the parade has never gone to before,\" she said. \"I think that's the thing: changing the players has allowed it to morph into something it wasn't before, and have the community take it back.\"
