\Today We Act, Tomorrow We Vote\: Latino Religions, Politics, and Activism in Contemporary U.S. Civil Society
The findings in this study indicate that Catholic and Protestant leaders like Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and Rev. Samuel Rodríguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference drew on religious rhetoric, symbols, moral authority, interfaith religious coalition building, and the Bible in the 2005-2007 immigration reform debate and in their struggle for greater tolerance and inclusion of Latinos in U.S. civil society. Mahony and other Catholics also drew on Catholic social teaching and several strategies employed by César Chávez in their struggles for social justice.

Opinion by Ernesto Portillo Jr.: Evangelical Latinos also are pushing for fair border reform
While the Escarcegas are legal residents, some of their fellow worshippers are undocumented. The Escarcegas fear the lives of many undocumented immigrants would be torn asunder under a proposed immigration bill passed by the Republican-controlled U.S. House. The Rev. Tirso Rubin, who spoke at the Downtown rally attended by nearly 15,000 people, said afterward that evangelical Latinos want the federal government to give undocumented immigrants a chance to participate fully in American society. The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez Jr., president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, which represents about 15 million evangelical Christians nationwide, signed the letter. Rodriguez, an Assembly of God minister in Sacramento, Calif., said immigration is an issue of family values.

More evangelicals embracing McCain immigration stance
Increasingly, religious conservatives are openly embracing [John McCain]'s approach to immigration, which could help McCain woo them, an important part of the Republican party's activist base. Nevertheless, immigration remains a secondary issue for most religious conservatives, who see abortion and gay marriage as primary issues. Many prominent conservative religious groups, such as Focus on the Family, remain neutral on immigration; some, such as the Christian Coalition, oppose comprehensive change. \"It's certainly possible that Senator McCain could use his approach to immigration reform to win support from evangelical voters, particularly in a close, crowded primary, where the evangelical vote might be divided up,\" said John Green, a senior fellow at the Pew Forum for Religion and American Politics, a nonpartisan research group. \"Whether it will work or not depends to what extent an issue like immigration becomes salient among evangelical voters.\"
