Letters, Faxes & E-Mail: Give real alternatives to car transportation
It is good to know that someone is thinking beyond automobiles for controlling atmospheric emissions from pollutant sources (\"Rethinking state plan to clear air,\" Page One, Oct. 23). Of course the list of options presented in the article --- enforcing or expanding current rules --- failed to suggest alternative options such as the construction of light rail, bike lanes and sidewalks.
Operation Phenomenon Takes off From Tampa - John Travolta Pilots Late Night Flight to Take Doctors and Medical Supplies to Haiti
\"I would like to thank Mr. [John Travolta] for the compassion he and his wife are showing to the people of Haiti at this time of great need,\" said Haitian Ambassador to the U.S. Raymond Joseph. \"The donation of his time and skills to pilot the relief supply plane to Haiti was greatly needed, and it is a true example of an individual's willingness to reconnect families which is very honorable and humbling.\" The Greater Washington Haiti Relief Committee is continuing to organize events and volunteers to assist the massive relief effort currently underway in Haiti, including coordinating with the Embassy of Haiti to ship already donated supplies to the island. GWHRC, with the assistance of the Embassy of Haiti, is expecting to send more medical professionals to Haiti as soon as planes are available.

A mystery trunk conjures stories of the skies over Europe during WWII
[Jaime Steve] was able to find contact information for Rogers in Santa Barbara, Calif., but when Jaime phoned in April, the flying ace's wife, Catherine, said he had passed away just a few weeks earlier at the age of 92 at Walter Reed. She put Jaime in touch with the general's children, two of whom Stephen Rogers and Ginna Rogers-Gould live in the Washington area. \"They probably just couldn't take everything they had with them to the overseas posting,\" Ginna said. \"What I'm guessing is they just asked Ace if they could store a locker there, and then it became forgotten.\" \"When I started to go through it, it just was like it was a gift from heaven,\" Ginna said. \"It was almost like my dad's hand reaching out to his family and saying: 'Don't forget some of the things I taught you. Don't forget what it is to be an American.' \"
Redlands sending two police cars packed in trash trucks to sister city in Louisiana
[Felix Roger Jones III], a Louisiana native who started the Inland Empire Katrina Relief Effort, recently returned from his third trip to the hurricane-ravaged area and his second trip from the Lafitte area in particular. By the second day of interviews, all the money had been spent and another 60 or so victims got only promises. These families and more are part of a growing list Jones is assembling to offer to Redlands families, church groups, service clubs or other individuals who would like to adopt hurricane victims. While in Jean Lafitte, Jones also made contact with the principals of the high school and elementary school to discuss jobs for University of Redlands students, who could be volunteering in the region during spring break and May term.
New Redlands group forming to help victims of hurricane
Spearheaded by the Redlands community service organization Gateway to Unity, directed by Pastor Felix Roger Jones, the Cops and Clergy Network and several Redlands church representatives have allied themselves with the effort. Gateway to Unity will forward extra supplies to Friend Ships to be distributed to Katrina victims in the South. Friend Ships will also provide Gateway to Unity updated information on the changing needs of hurricane victims. Pastor Jones is encouraging locals who are organizing relief efforts to join forces with Gateway to Unity.
High hopes for Redlands walk
The Cops and Clergy Network, which sponsored the walk, has no designs on matching the 250,000 people who gathered in 1963 to support King and his struggle for civil rights. But [Felix Roger Jones III], pastor at First All People Unity Baptist Church in Redlands and a member of the network, thinks his event can eventually surpass the 100 people who attended the first walk, held two years ago. Cops and Clergy, a group of law enforcement and religious leaders dedicated to violence prevention among at- risk youth, usually holds prayer walks on the third Saturday of every month. But they rearranged this month's schedule in order to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Jones knows there is a long way to go but also understands how far the country has come. He remembers growing up in Louisiana in the 1950s, sitting in the back of the bus, using separate bathrooms and water fountains for \"colored' people and watching movies from the balcony.
