Roth surprises even himself with sectional time drops
by
Mellema, Darryl
in
Roth, B J
2007
Saying St. Charles East junior B.J. [B. J. Roth] dropped time to qualify for the state meet is like saying Michael Phelps had some success in men's swimming at the last Olympics. There is fact in both statements but the magnitude of the achievement is lost. And while Roth didn't win six gold medals and two bronze medals at Saturday's St. Charles East sectional, his performance was no less jaw-dropping. In the 200-yard freestyle, Roth stepped onto the blocks with a seed time of 1:53.55, six seconds from the 1:47.69 state qualifying standard. Worse, Roth was swimming in the second-fastest heat and didn't have the benefit of the fastest swimmers to help him along. Later in the meet, Roth attempted qualification in the 500 freestyle and needed an even larger time drop. Roth's seed time was 5:08.42 and the state cut was 4:52.99.
