Plastic ingestion by mesopelagic fishes in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
2011
The oceanic convergence zone in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre acts to accumulate floating marine debris, including plastic fragments of various sizes. Little is known about the ecological consequences of pelagic plastic accumulation. During the 2009 Scripps Environmental Accumulation of Plastics Expedition (SEAPLEX), we investigated whether mesopelagic fishes ingest plastic debris. A total of 141 fishes from 27 species were dissected to examine whether their stomach contents contained plastic particles. The incidence of plastic in fish stomachs was 9.2%. Net feeding bias was evaluated and judged to be minimal for our methods. The ingestion rate of plastic debris by mesopelagic fishes in the North Pacific is estimated to be from 12 000 to 24 000 tons yr–1. Similar rates of plastic ingestion by mesopelagic fishes may occur in other subtropical gyres.

Compression bandages
2007
When an initially stretched rubber band is suddenly released at one end, an axial-stress front propagating at the celerity of sound separates a free and a stretched domain of the elastic material. As soon as it reaches the clamped end, the front rebounds and a compression front propagates backward. When the length of the compressed area exceeds Euler critical length, a dynamic buckling instability develops. The rebound is analysed using Saint-Venant's theory of impacts and we use a dynamical extension of the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation to obtain a relation between the buckled wavelength, the initial stretching and the rubber band thickness. The influence of an external fluid medium is also considered: owing to added mass and viscosity, the instability growth rate decreases. With a high viscosity, the axial-stress front spreads owing to viscous frictional forces during the release phase. As a result, the selected wavelength increases significantly.

Algorithm discovery by protein folding game players
2011
Foldit is a multiplayer online game in which players collaborate and compete to create accurate protein structure models. For specific hard problems, Foldit player solutions can in some cases outperform state-of-the-art computational methods. However, very little is known about how collaborative gameplay produces these results and whether Foldit player strategies can be formalized and structured so that they can be used by computers. To determine whether high performing player strategies could be collectively codified, we augmented the Foldit gameplay mechanics with tools for players to encode their folding strategies as \"recipes\" and to share their recipes with other players, who are able to further modify and redistribute them. Here we describe the rapid social evolution of player-developed folding algorithms that took place in the year following the introduction of these tools. Players developed over 5,400 different recipes, both by creating new algorithms and by modifying and recombining successful recipes developed by other players. The most successful recipes rapidly spread through the Foldit player population, and two of the recipes became particularly dominant. Examination of the algorithms encoded in these two recipes revealed a striking similarity to an unpublished algorithm developed by scientists over the same period. Benchmark calculations show that the new algorithm independently discovered by scientists and by Foldit players outperforms previously published methods. Thus, online scientific game frameworks have the potential not only to solve hard scientific problems, but also to discover and formalize effective new strategies and algorithms.

Efficacy and safety of combined endoscopic rubber band ligation in the treatment of grade II-III prolapsed hemorrhoids: a retrospective study (with video)
2026
BackgroundHemorrhoids is one of the most common anorectal diseases. In recent years, the incidence rate of hemorrhoids has been rising.AimsTo investigate the efficacy and safety of combined endoscopic rubber band ligation (ERBL) in the treatment of grade II-III prolapsed internal hemorrhoids.MethodsPatients with grade II-III prolapsed internal hemorrhoids treated from January 2019 to June 2023 were reviewed.ResultsComplete resolution was achieved in 124 cases (91.85%), partial resolution in 7 cases (5.19%), and recurrence in 4 cases (2.96%). 34 (25.19%) cases experienced anal pain after procedure, with a median visual analog scale (VAS) score of 0 (0–3). Postoperative bleeding occurred in 18 (13.33%) cases. Anal swelling was observed in 19 (14.07%) cases, and urinary retention occurred in 4 cases (2.96%). The incidence of postoperative pain (30.43% vs. 11.6%, P = 0.018) and VAS scores (0 vs. 0, P = 0.003) in the ligate three hemorrhoids group were significantly higher compared to the ligate two hemorrhoids group. There was no significant difference in long-term efficacy between the two groups. Male [odds ratio (OR) 5.654, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.222–26.159; P = 0.027] and postoperative complications (OR 4.914, 95% CI 1.080–22.345; P = 0.039) were independent risk factors that were incomplete resolution.ConclusionsCombined ERBL is an efficient and safe method for grade II-III prolapsed internal hemorrhoids. The number of hemorrhoids ligated had no significant effect on the long-term outcome, but the ligation of three hemorrhoids was associated with an increased incidence of postoperative pain. Male and postoperative complications are risk factors for incomplete resolution.

Sexual behaviors in animals are governed by inputs from multiple external sensory modalities. However, how these inputs are integrated to jointly control animal behavior is still poorly understood. Whereas visual information alone is not sufficient to induce courtship behavior in Drosophila melanogaster males, when a subset of male-specific fruitless (fru)-and doublesex (dsx)-expressing neurons that respond to chemosensory cues (P1 neurons) were artificially activated via a temperature-sensitive cation channel (dTRPA1), males followed and extended their wing toward moving objects (even a moving piece of rubber band) intensively. When stationary, these objects were not courted. Our results indicate that motion input and activation of P1 neurons are individually necessary, and under our assay conditions, jointly sufficient to elicit early courtship behaviors, and provide insights into how courtship decisions are made via sensory integration.
