VISUAL ARTS: CREATIVE JOURNEYS SAGE INSTITUTE OFFERS LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS
Based on his personal journey \"to learn the song of mother earth,\" according to press materials, [Paul Rudy]'s \"2012 Stories\" is described as an ongoing musical work drawing from his worldwide travels and excursions into \"greenspace,\" including many trips to Taos and other New Mexican environs. Rudy's contribution is said to weave together \"a powerful recording of the stream at the bottom of Canyon de Chelly, owl and other bird sounds, tea kettles, and additional audio material\" from his fourth \"2012 Stories\" CD, which will be released soon on iTunes. \"We are excited to be hosting a month of practice and creativity,\" Aaron Garlick, co-founder of the SAGE Youth, said. \"We are getting to work with all the people we respect and look up to, which is amazing. It's a great opportunity for everyone.\"
True to her cool: Cellist Madeleine Shapiro stays true to her musical tastes: Whether the music is from a quartet or a cactus, ?I just know what I like,' the cellist says
\"I don't pay too much attention to what trends are; I just know what I like and what I'm interested in,\" [Madeleine Shapiro] said. \"My objective is to stay true to myself.\" For 30 years she has been a pillar of New York City's new-music scene, as performer, as a director of the New Music Consort and later ModernWorks and as a teacher at the Mannes College of Music. She has been a collaborator and friend of renowned composers ranging from John Cage to Chen Yi to Milton Babbitt to Philip Glass. Didjeridoo? That's child's play in Kansas City. Here we play the cactus. As part of a project to foster new works, she recently programmed on a New York concert UMKC's [Paul Rudy]'s famous \"Grandchild of Tree,\" a piece in which a performer plucks and strums an electroacoustically wired cactus. Once you get past the novelty of someone playing a cactus, Shapiro said, \"it really is a serious piece.\" Shapiro and her husband, Barry -- an electrical engineer who \"claims to have a tin ear\" -- are longtime residents of New York's upper west side. But they love the outdoors, and Shapiro has used her hiking clubs to act as an evangelist for new music.
