The new ice curtain
2015
The New Ice Curtain explores Russia's strategic ambitions for its Arctic region—an understudied and underappreciated region that encompasses nearly the entire northern coast of Eurasia. As the Russian Arctic produces 14 percent of Russian GDP, 22 percent of its exports, and is home to nearly 2 million of its citizens, Russia's economic future will increasingly depend on robust Arctic development.

2025
In 2014, a well-trained, mysterious band of mercenaries arrived in Ukraine, part of Russia's first attempt to claim the country. Upon ceasefire, the 'Wagner Group' faded back into shadow, only to reemerge in the Middle East and in Africa. Dually armed with military and strategic prowess, they created a new market in a vast geopolitical landscape increasingly receptive to the promises of private actors. In this account of the group's origins and operations, John Lechner shows how Wagner partnered with fragile nation states, scored access to natural resources, ousted peacekeeping missions and cashed in on conflicts reframed as Kremlin interests.

Russian Military Reform, 1992-2002
2004,2003
Military reform has featured prominently on the agenda of many countries since the end of the Cold War necessitated a re-evaluation of the strategic role of the armed forces, and nowhere more publicly than in Russia.
Not since the 1920s have the Russian Armed Forces undergone such fundamental change.
President Boris Yeltsin and his successor Vladimir Putin have both grappled with the issue, with varying degrees of success. An international team of experts here consider the essential features of Russian military reform in the decade since the disintegration of the USSR. Fluctuations in the purpose and priorities of the reform process are traced, as well as the many factors influencing change. Chapters analyse the development of Russia's security policy, structural reform of the services, the social impact of military service and experience of military conflict in Chechnya. Critical evaluations of the impact of social change on the Russian Armed Forces' capabilities and expectations complement the analysis of the on-going debate. Russian Military Reform, 1992-2002 will prove invaluable to all those interested in civil-military relationships and international security as well as to students of military theory and practice.
Assessing Russia's Decline
2002
What challenges does today's Russia pose for the United States and the U.S. Air Force? If certain economic, military, social, and political negative trends in Russia continue, they may create a new set of dangers that might prove more real, and therefore more frightening, than the far-off specter of Russian attack ever was. In a number of scenarios, the U.S. Air Force is certain to be called upon for transportation and perhaps for various military missions in a very demanding environment.
