Päästma ja päästja – ühest eesti ja läti ühisest tüvest
Eesti tegusõnal päästma, mida seni on peetud tõlkelaenuks vene keelest, on vaste läti keeles tegusõna pestīt näol. See on tõenäoliselt laen liivi või eesti keelest. Sel läänemeresoome tüvel puudub siiani etümoloogia. Analüüsides tüve pääst(ma) ja pestī(t) esinemist ning häälikkuju vastavalt eesti ja läti vanas kirjakeeles, leitakse siinses artiklis, et eesti tüvi võib olla otsene laen vene keelest. Venemõjuline võib olla ka läti vanas kirjakeeles esinev vorm pastīt.Päästma ‘to save’ and päästja ‘saver’ – about an Estonian verb stem, which is also found in Latvian. It is argued that Estonian päästma ‘to save’ which has been considered a translation loan from Russian, may actually be a direct loan from Russian. The Latvian word pestīt ‘to save’, which is usually considered a Livonian loan is found in old Latvian texts also in form pastīt, which indicates a possible Russian influence.
