Patterns of Meaning and the Claims of History: S.J. Naudé’s The Third Reel
2025
The Third Reel by Afrikaans novelist S.J. Naudé tells the story of a South African protagonist who tries to escape from both his fatherland and the different political and social histories associated with it. With London as new home, he strikes up a relationship with a lover who is preoccupied with his own personal and national (German) history in a markedly different way. As the narrative unfolds, their particular engagements with the patterns of meaning that all histories presuppose relate thematically to Benjamin’s angelus novus , a central motif in the novel. Naudé’s novel can therefore be read with reference to Benjamin’s respective notions of history as empty time and as messianic time. Naudé’s position as Afrikaans writer, who writes in a marginal language located between the local and the global, is of consequence for the ways in which history is engaged with thematically in the novel.
