Dark humour celebrates family's parental losses
This is one of those laugh-out-loud-on-the-subway novels, but it also manages to be sad and authentic. As age starts to get the better of the family's patriarch and matriarch, Joy can do nothing but fake it for the benefit of [Molly] and Daniel, who act like middle-aged children in the face of their parents' decline. This behaviour is irritating, but it's also what people do. Molly muses that, while our parents are still living we still get to be children; when our parents are gone or incapacitated, we must officially step into adulthood. It's terrifying.
