Political Agroecology
Political Agroecology is the first book to offer a systematic and articulated reflection on Political Agroecology from the Agroecological perspective. It defines the disciplinary field responsible for designing and producing actions, institutions and regulations aimed at achieving agrarian sustainability. In short, it aims to build a political theory that makes the scaling-up of agroecological experiences possible, turning them into the foundation of a new and alternative food regime. The book proposes theoretical, practical and epistemological foundations of a new theoretical and practical field of work for agroecologists: Political Agroecology . It establishes a framework for a common agroecological strategy, covering the different levels of collective action and the different instruments with which it can be developed. This will be essential reading for agroecologists, environmentalists, farming and food communities, and an ideal textbook for advanced agroecology courses in universities. Key features: Offers a unique state of the art on this fundamental new topic: Political Agroecology Presents a complete introduction to the political and institutional aspects of Agroecology, covering the whole food system Offers an important tool for searching agrarian sustainability Provides a broad epistemological, theoretical and methodological focus, exploring the connection between the different levels and scales involved in agroecological theory and practice Manuel González de Molina Full Professor of Modern History. Causality of interest rate policy and agricultural production in an atmosphere of economic deregulation in Nigeria
This study was carried out to examine the causal relationship between interest rate policy and agricultural production in a deregulated economic setting in Nigeria using time series data covering 1987 to 2011. The data utilized include data on interest rate and agricultural production which were obtained from various publications of central bank of Nigeria. Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test, Vector autoregression (VAR) lag order selection test and Granger causality test were employed in the data analysis and the result indicated that market driven interest rate was not significant in influencing agricultural production over the period of deregulation and this was attributed to the substantial volatility and high market driven interest rate leading to limited accessibility to credit facilities by small scale farmers. It is recommended that the central bank of Nigeria should strongly exercise some measure of interest rate control that favours investment friendly interest rate policy that is supportive of credit mobilization for sustainable agricultural production and also the realization of the goal of Agricultural Transformation Action Plan (ATAP) in Nigeria.
The methods of valuation in agricultural accounting
This paper deals with the valuation of the biological assets and agricultural production. Czech and international approaches are analyzed. The International Accounting Standards offer more authentic valuations of economic processes in agricultural activities than the Czech accounting legislation. The comparison of the two approaches show some differences which can influence the financial statements of enterprises. The International Accounting Standards emphasize the principle of fair and true view, whereas the Czech accounting emphasizes the principle of prudence.
Comparison of selected indicators of farms in the EU member states
The following international comparison of selected indicators of farms stems from the official results of investigations on holdings incorporated in the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). It is based on the standard outputs recalculated for the average agricultural holding in each member state. The paper accepts the mandatory concept that defines the basic indicators serving to illustrate the creation and division of income from farming in the FADN system. The presentation of the results develops from the indicators assessing the overall agricultural production divided into its basic components. Production and cost indicators, operational subsidies, gross and net added value per one hectare of agricultural land, or per one AWU and other derived indicators are analysed.
Farmers and markets: the political economy of new paradigms
Timmer discusses how building a more realistic paradigm of farm decision making has been driven partly by the irrelevance of two specific paradigms and by the sheer intellectual challenge of the task. A workable political economy paradigm is going to be needed to carry out more research.
