Bats of Southern and Central Africa: A Biogeographic and Taxonomic Synthesis
This revised edition of Bats of Southern and Central Africa builds on the solid foundation of the first edition and supplements the original account of bat species then known to be found in Southern and Central Africa with an additional eight newly described species, bringing the total to 124.The chapters on evolution, biogeography, ecology and echolocation have been updated, citing dozens of recently published papers. The book covers the latest systematic and taxonomic studies, ensuring that the names and relationships of bats in this new edition reflect current scientific knowledge.The species accounts provide descriptions, measurements and diagnostic characters as well as detailed information about the distribution, habitat, roosting habits, foraging ecology and reproduction of each species. Étiologie des métamorphoses du vivant: Le sceau prémonitoire des chauves-souris
Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Burkina Faso, in this article I explore the figure of the bat at the intersection of mythological narratives, health crises, and ecological changes linked to deforestation and mining. By combining oral knowledge—primarily from the Lobi people—with contemporary global health issues, it highlights the paradoxical role of this animal. Centrally accused in emerging zoonoses (Ebola, Covid-19), the bat—also capable of hosting viruses without being affected by them—may also be perceived as a liminal being, bearing a kind of premonitory seal of imbalance within the living world, where humans and non-humans are interconnected, often without knowing or intending it. Local narratives, both cosmogonic and etiological, attribute to its inverted posture and nocturnal life the mark of an ancient conflict with the Sky God. It embodies revolt, loyalty, memory, while also offering a form of resistance to misfortune, which it can occasionally counter as a therapeutic assistant to certain diviner-healers. Integrating the symbolic frameworks to which it is subject into a “Planetary Health” approach enriches—and at the same time complicates—our understanding of many current afflictions at the dawn of the climate crisis. Cet article s’appuie sur une étude ethnographique réalisée au Burkina Faso pour analyser la représentation de la chauve-souris à l’intersection des récits mythologiques, des crises sanitaires, et des transformations écologiques liées à la déforestation et à l’exploitation minière. En intégrant les savoirs oraux recueillis principalement auprès du peuple Lobi, l’article met en lumière le rôle complexe de cet animal dans le contexte des enjeux sanitaires mondiaux actuels. Accusée d’être au cœur des zoonoses émergentes (Ebola, COVID-19), la chauve-souris, également capable d’héberger des virus sans en être affectée, peut également être perçue comme un être liminal, porteur d’une sorte de sceau prémonitoire de déséquilibre au sein du monde vivant, où les humains et les non-humains sont interconnectés, souvent sans le savoir ni le vouloir. Les récits locaux, tant cosmogoniques qu’étiologiques, attribuent à sa posture inversée et à sa vie nocturne la marque d’un ancien conflit avec le Dieu du Ciel. Elle incarne la révolte, la loyauté, la mémoire, tout en offrant une forme de résistance au malheur, qu’elle peut parfois contrer en tant qu’assistante thérapeutique de certains guérisseurs-devins. L’intégration des cadres symboliques auxquels il est soumis dans une approche de ‘santé planétaire’ enrichit – et en même temps complique – notre compréhension de nombreuses afflictions actuelles à l’aube de la crise climatique.

Bats in the Changing Boreal Forest: Response to a Megafire by Endangered Little Brown Bats (Myotis lucifugus)
Wildfire is a pervasive disturbance in the boreal forest, and fire size and severity is increasing due to climate change. Yet, wildfire impacts on boreal bats are unknown. Burned forest may be attractive to bats because of an increase in dead trees and a reduction in vegetative clutter. Using ultrasonic detectors, I sampled little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) activity at lakeshore and upland sites within burned and mature forest. Activity was greater in mature than burned forest at both upland and lakeshore sites. Activity was greater at lakeshores, where some large snags survived fire. The relative use of edges created by fire, lakeshores and roads was also investigated. Bat activity was greater at lakeshores than other edge types. Bats made little use of burned upland areas or fire-created edges. This study provides a first approximation of the effect of a ‘megafire’ on bats in the boreal forest and suggests that large, severe wildfires may have a negative impact. Protection of mature forest containing large dead trees, particularly along lakeshores, may help to mitigate the loss of habitat due to wildfires. Further work, however, is needed to assess bat activity in burns of differing sizes, severity and age.
Activation of Rice nicotianamine synthase 2 (OsNAS2) Enhances Iron Availability for Biofortification
Because micronutrients in human diets ultimately come from plant sources, malnutrition of essential minerals is a significant public health concern. By increasing the expression of nicotianamine synthase (NAS), we fortified the level of bioavailable iron in rice seeds. Activation of iron deficiency-inducible OsNAS2 resulted in a rise in Fe content (3.0-fold) in mature seeds. Its ectopic expression also increased that content. Enhanced expression led to higher tolerance of Fe deficiency and better growth under elevated pH. Mice fed with OsNAS2-D1 seeds recovered more rapidly from anemia, indicating that bioavailable Fe contents were improved by this increase in OsNAS2 expression.
