Saving Satir: Contemporary Perspectives on the Change Process Model

2016
Virginia Satir continues to be a highly influential figure in family therapy. The summation of her decades of work with families, the Satir growth model (SGM), remains a relevant therapeutic approach that is still practiced by many. This narrative review sought to examine (a) the core therapeutic methods developed by Satir for working with families, and (b) the empirical evidence to support the use of such methods. The author reviewed both firsthand and secondhand accounts of Satir's model of therapy, as well as extant research. Results from four included studies lend equivocal support for the continued use of Satir's approaches in contemporary family therapy. Implications for clinicians include the need for further refinement and systematization of the SGM. Also, researchers must empirically test Satir's methods using stronger methodology with larger and more diverse samples. In an age where evidence-based practice has become standard, all stakeholders must actively work to bolster the support for Virginia Satir's work, lest her important contributions to family therapy be forgotten due to insufficient evidence.

This qualitative single-case study examines how spirituality promotes mental health within a stigmatized occupation by analyzing an in-depth interview with “Perla,” a 62-year-old Mexican woman with decades of experience in sex work. Guided by Virginia Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST), specifically the Self-Mandala and Iceberg Metaphor, we conceptualize spirituality as a universal human dimension of meaning, moral orientation, and relational connection that may be expressed within or beyond formal religion. Narrative thematic analysis identifies processes through which Perla cultivates congruence (alignment of inner experience and outward conduct), safeguards dignity, and sustains hope amid systemic constraints. Her Catholic practices (prayer, ritual boundaries regarding Eucharist) coexist with a broader spiritual agency that supports self-worth, emotional regulation, boundary-setting, and coherent identity, factors associated with mental well-being. Interdisciplinary implications bridge marriage and family therapy, psychology, pastoral care, and cultural studies. Clinically, we translate Satir’s constructs (yearnings, perceptions, expectations, coping stances) into practical assessment and intervention steps that can be applied in secular settings without religious presuppositions. Analytic rigor was supported through reflective memoing, a structured three-level coding process, constant comparison, and verification by a second coder. The case challenges pathologizing frames of sex workers by demonstrating how spirituality can function as a protective, growth-oriented resource that fosters agency and moral coherence.

2016
This commentary offers an expanded viewpoint to Christopher J. Wretman's (2016) article titled \"Saving Satir: Contemporary Perspectives on the Change Process Model.\" The article observed that Virginia Satir's work has been underrepresented in the research and academic literature. Her penchant for connecting with the grassroots and with families directly is not foreign to social workers, who can be seen as forerunners to the profession of marriage and family therapy.

A recursive frame analysis of Virginia Satir through the biopsychosocial lens
2016
This study attempts to add to the understanding and metatheory of the therapeutic process through the analysis of a therapeutic session through the lens of the biopsychosocial model. The study examines which interventions were utilized, in what system, and during which stage of therapy. In order to accomplish this goal, a recursive frame analysis was utilized to track the different frames and interventions of Virginia Satir's \"Of Rocks and Flowers \" training session. Results indicated that Satir operated at all three levels of the biopsychosocial system and utilized exploratory questions to assess the vicious cycle in Act I, in Act II she has the family work on communication patterns and reframing their perceptions, and helps them change their interactional patterns and connect with each other differently through sensory based exercises. This study shows the importance of utilizing qualitative methodologies like RFA to help develop a comprehensive theory as quantitative methodologies offer advantages in viewing the broad strokes of the picture, qualitative methodologies and specifically RFA, are essential in developing the fine detail of the picture. AİLE TERAPİSİ MODELİNDE SATİR'İN KULLANDIĞI KAVRAMLAR VE TEKNİKLER-I 65
2019

2009
Couple therapy models for pathological gambling are limited. Congruence Couple Therapy is an integrative, humanistic, systems model that addresses intrapsychic, interpersonal, intergenerational, and universal–spiritual disconnections of pathological gamblers and their spouses to shift towards congruence. Specifically, CCT’s theoretical foundations, main constructs, and treatment interventions are illustrated in a progression of six clinical phases. Promise of CCT’s systemic conceptualization and interventions for pathological gambling and future directions in its continuing evolution are discussed.

Gender matters in the satir growth model
1999
This article reports research findings regarding ways in which Virginia Satir incorporated attention to gender in her growth model of family therapy. Characteristics of a feminist-informed approach to therapy were used as a conceptual framework for the research. Findings yielded three themes which characterize ways Satir incorporated gender in the growth model: (1) by paying attention to the societal context; (2) by transforming gender-based power inequities; and (3) by transforming old learnings about gendered roles. Areas of convergence and divergence between characteristics of the Satir growth model and feminist-informed therapy are examined.
