Under the hood of the Cyclone-Williams LSR car will be a version of the Mark 5 steam engine invented by Harry Schoell, chief executive officer of Cyclone Power Technologies. The Cyclone engine burns its fuel in an external combustion chamber, where the heat is used to turn water into steam to power the engine, according to the company. To produce steam the engine can burn virtually any fuel including ethanol, gasoline, diesel and biofuels. With low emissions and exhaust, it's environmentally friendly, according to Schoell.

The 46-foot boat, which was designed by Harry Schoell, president of Infinity Yachts in Fort Lauderdale, is called SR-84 because State Road 84 runs by Schoell's marina and boat-building sheds. Amidships, where the bow and stern sections join, is a two-man cockpit covered with a canopy from an F-16 fighter. The Blackbird SR-71 influence carries over to the color scheme: the boat will be solid black. It will be owned by a corporation held by Schoell, Merlin, Von Zwehl and [Paul Sommers]. The boat, which will have a maximum beam of 21 feet, will float on the bow section and on the engine pods. The pods can be detached to reduce the beam to 10 feet for over-the-road trailering. Instead of buying a trailer to carry the boat, Schoell has built a \"landing gear\" to fit under the boat for towing.

He's used some personal funds to build it, but about 80 percent of the nearly $50,000 construction costs (excluding the Cyclone engine) has come from sponsors \"who've wanted their name on it.\" \"If the engine does what it's supposed to do, we'll break the record.
