Resisting Uniformity: How Transgender and Gender-Diverse Teachers Subvert School Dress Codes for Self-Affirmation and Possibility
Transgender and gender-diverse teachers occupy a precarious position within educational spaces, often facing increased scrutiny and regulation aimed at disciplining their gender expression. This article brings to light original and significant insights by exploring how transgender and gender-diverse teachers resist and subvert cisnormative dress codes, as acts of self-affirmation and resistance within their professional educational contexts. Through an unconventional lens of Barad’s feminist new materialism combined with Wieringa’s continuum of symbolic subversion, our analysis offers an important theoretical contribution by interpreting how these individuals negotiate and challenge institutional cisnormativity, unsettling the tacit expectations of gendered professionalism in their trans embodiment. Drawing on the experiences of three transgender and gender-diverse teacher participants, a group often overlooked, this paper integrates findings from two distinct qualitative studies which used a participatory-focused ‘object-interview’ methodology. Findings from these in-depth studies reveal that transgender and gender-diverse teachers trouble dress code regulations by simultaneously embodying resistance and compliance, effectively reshaping and disrupting gendered expectations and institutional norms. While some forms of self-affirmation expressed by participants remained unseen, others materialised as embodied subversions of normative organisational expectations. Additionally, the degree of agency these teachers have in resisting binary dress code constraints is contingent on the entanglements of the teachers themselves, students, school policies, leadership and institutional climates. Unexpectedly, this research suggests that schools can act as sites of visibility and safety for transgender and gender-diverse teachers, where gender expression is validated and extends beyond the classroom. This article concludes by recognising that, when transgender and gender-diverse teachers resist uniformity and dress code norms, they embody their affirmed identities and, in doing so, offer vital representation for transgender and gender-diverse students, providing a sense of belonging, possibility, and authenticity within educational spaces.
The Policing of Native Bodies and Minds: Perspectives on Schooling from American Indian Youth
Research indicates that high school campus climates are contentious for students of color, particularly as they negotiate institutional and personal racism. Unfortunately, minimal research centers on the experiences of American Indian youth. In response, this qualitative study explores American Indian responses to hostile campus climates. Using a Tribal Critical Race Theory framework, this article examines hostile school policies and leadership practices and student responses in a public high school with a majority population of American Indian students who reside on a reservation. Two main themes emerged: (a) the school neglected students’ educational needs and views, and (b) the school marginalized Native students through specific policies. As this study demonstrates, American Indian youth’s daily encounters in a racially charged high school environment affect their identities and well-being. Implications and recommendations for research, policy, and practice are included.

Revisiting Dewey in the Age of Common Core: Confessions of an Unwilling Deconstructivist
The author said when she began teaching English in a comprehensive public high school in North Philadelphia in the late 1990s, she was thrilled to have her own classroom to call home; the luxury of a dedicated space in such a crowded building meant that she could invite her students, primarily students of color from low-income neighborhoods, to take ownership of the room. She believed powerfully in John Dewey's insistence that even the youngest children have a natural inclination toward experimentation and inferential thinking: \"The real problem of intellectual education is the transformation of natural powers into expert, tested powers: the transformation of more or less casual curiosity and sporadic suggestion into attitudes of alert, cautious, and thorough inquiry\". Dewey had taught her that she should not try to eliminate problems for her students, but instead cherish such problems because \"growth depends upon the presence of difficulty to be overcome by the exercise of intelligence\".
Sexual Assault against Female Nigerian Students
Sexual assault is a common social disorder among students in our tertiary institutions. This study ascertains the extent and effect of sexual assault among Nigerian students. Two hundred and Sixty Eight structured questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected students in 4 tertiary institutions, information on socio demography, sexual history and consequences of their exposure were obtained for analysis and interpretation. Thirty seven (13.8%) of the respondents were sexually assaulted as a student and 19 (7.1%) were assaulted by their lecturers and fellow students, Younger age at coitarche, history of forced coitarche, marriage, coitarche with relations and unknown persons, significantly influenced subsequent risks of sexual assault. Improve security, moral behaviours enforcing dress code and stiffer penalties were suggested ways to prevent sexual assault among the students. Sexual assault is still a common finding in our institutions; effort should be made by all stake holders to prevent this social embarrassment. La violence sexuelle est un désordre social commun chez les étudiants dans nos institutions tertiaires. Cette étude vérifie Pampleur et Peffet de la violence sexuelle chez les étudiarts nigérians. Deux cent soixante-huit questionnaires structurés ont été distribués aux étudiantes qui ont été sélectionnées au hasard dans quatre institutions tertiaires. Nous avons collecté, analysé et interprété les données sur la sociodémographie, le passé sexuel et les conséquences de leur exposition. Trente-sept (13,8%) des interviewées ont été sexuellement agressées en tant qu? étudiantes et 19(7,1%) ont été agressées par leurs professeurs et leurs condisciples. Le fait d?avoir eu des rapports sexuels à un plus jeune âge, une histore d?avoir eu un rapport sexuel forcé, le mariage, des rapports sexuels avec des relations et avec des inconnus, ont influencé de manière importante, les risques de la violence sexuelle. Comme manière de prévenir la violence sexuelle à venir parmi les étudiants, nous avons suggéré l? amelioration de la sécurité, du comportement, la mise en application d?un code vestimentaire et des pénalisations plus strictes. La violence sexuelle est toujours commune dans nos institutions. ll faut que tous les intéressés fassent l? effort pour prévenir cet embarras social.
Constitutional Law — Free Speech Clause — Fifth Circuit Upholds Texas School District's Dress Code Under Intermediate Scrutiny. — Palmer ex rel. Palmer v. Waxahachie Independent School District, 579 F.3d 502 (5th Cir. 2009), cert. denied, 130 S. Ct. 1055 (2010)
Over forty years ago, the Supreme Court issued its landmark student speech decision, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, proclaiming that students do not \"shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.\" Tinker held that in order for public schools to regulate student speech, schools must demonstrate that the speech would \"substantially interfere\" with school discipline or with the rights of other students. Since this decision, the Court has carved out three narrow exceptions to the Tinker rule, granting schools the authority to regulate sexually explicit or lewd speech, school-sponsored speech, and speech promoting illegal drug use. Recently, in Palmer ex rel Palmer v. Waxahachie Independent School District, the Fifth Circuit upheld the constitutionality of the dress code of the Waxahachie Independent School District (WISD) under intermediate scrutiny. The court thereby affirmed, on different grounds, the district court's denial of a preliminary injunction to enjoin enforcement of WISD's dress code as to Palmer's political speech.
