Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age
As digital technologies are expanding the power and reach of research, they are also raising complex issues. These include complications in ensuring the validity of research data; standards that do not keep pace with the high rate of innovation; restrictions on data sharing that reduce the ability of researchers to verify results and build on previous research; and huge increases in the amount of data being generated, creating severe challenges in preserving that data for long-term use. Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age examines the consequences of the changes affecting research data with respect to three issues - integrity, accessibility, and stewardship-and finds a need for a new approach to the design and the management of research projects. The report recommends that all researchers receive appropriate training in the management of research data, and calls on researchers to make all research data, methods, and other information underlying results publicly accessible in a timely manner. The book also sees the stewardship of research data as a critical long-term task for the research enterprise and its stakeholders. Individual researchers, research institutions, research sponsors, professional societies, and journals involved in scientific, engineering, and medical research will find this book an essential guide to the principles affecting research data in the digital age.
Beginning artificial intelligence with the Raspberry Pi
\"A gentle introduction to the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) using the Raspberry Pi as the computing platform. Most of the major AI topics will be explored, including expert systems, machine learning both shallow and deep, fuzzy logic control, and more! AI in action will be demonstrated using the Python language on the Raspberry Pi. The Prolog language will also be introduced and used to demonstrate fundamental AI concepts. In addition, the Wolfram language will be used as part of the deep machine learning demonstrations. A series of projects will walk readers through how to implement AI concepts with the Raspberry Pi. Minimal expense is needed for the projects as only a few sensors and actuators will be required. Beginners and hobbyists can jump right in to creating AI projects with the Raspberry Pi using this book.\"--Back cover.
Carbon Nanofibers
This book covers the fundamentals and applications of Carbon Nanofiber (CNF).In the first section, the initial chapter on the fundamentals of CNF is by Professor Maheshwar Sharon, the recognized \"Father of Carbon Nanotechnology in India\", which powerfully provides a succinct overview of CNFs.
Meta-attributes and artificial networking : a new tool for seismic interpretation
\"Overview of meta-attributes and how to design them. Case studies demonstrating the application of meta-attributes. Sample data sets available for hands-on exercises. The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals\"-- Provided by publisher.
Low Temperature Plasma Technology
This book provides a balanced and thorough treatment of the core principles, novel technology and diagnostics, and state-of-the-art applications of low temperature plasmas. It explores related phenomena, such as plasma bullets, discharge-mode transition of atmospheric pressure plasmas, and self-organization of microdischarges, and describes relevant technology and diagnostics, including nanosecond pulsed discharge, cavity ringdown spectroscopy, and laser-induced fluorescence measurement. The authors also discuss how low temperature plasmas are used in the synthesis of nanomaterials, environmental applications, the treatment of biomaterials, and plasma medicine.
Artificial Neural Networks in Biological and Environmental Analysis
Based on our knowledge of the functioning human brain, ANNs (artificial neural networks) serve as a modern paradigm for computing. Drawing on the author's substantial experience, this book provides a comprehensive introduction and practical guide to the development, optimization, and application of ANNs in modern environmental and biological analysis. Presenting basic principles together with simulated biological and environmental data sets and real applications in the field, this volume helps scientists use the power of the ANN model to explain physical concepts and to demonstrate complex natural processes.
Fundamentals of capturing and processing drone imagery and data
\"Unmanned Aircraft Systems are rapidly emerging as flexible platforms for capturing imagery and other data across sciences. Many colleges and universities are developing courses on UAS-based data acquisition. This book is a comprehensive, introductory text on how to use unmanned aircraft systems for data capture and analysis. It provides best practices for planning data capture missions and hands-on learning modules geared toward UAS data collection, processing, and applications. Readers will learn how to process different types of UAS imagery for applications such as Precision Agriculture, Forestry, Urban Landscapes, and apply this knowledge in environmental monitoring and land-use studies\"-- Provided by publisher.
Drawing as a way of knowing in art and science
In recent history, the arts and sciences have often considered opposing fields of study, but a growing trend in drawing research is beginning to bridge this divide. Gemma Anderson’s Drawing as a Way of Knowing in Art and Science introduces tested ways in which drawing as a research practice can enhance morphological insight, specifically within the natural sciences, mathematics and art. Inspired and informed by collaboration with contemporary scientists and Goethe’s studies of morphology, as well as the work of artist Paul Klee, this book presents drawing as a means of developing and disseminating knowledge, and of understanding and engaging with the diversity of natural and theoretical forms, such as animal, mineral and four-dimensional shapes. Anderson shows that drawing can offer a means of scientific discovery and can be integral to the creation of knowledge in science as well as in the arts.
