A World Apart
2008
In 1936, Joseph Margoshes (1866-1955), a writer for the New York Yiddish daily Morgen Journal, published a memoir of his youth in Austro-Hungarian Galicia. He evoked a world that had been changed almost beyond recognition as a result of the First World War and was shortly to be completely obliterated by the Holocaust. It is an important evocation of an entire Jewish society and civilization.

Andrzej Mostowski was one of the leading 20th century logicians. His legacy is examined in this volume of papers devoted both to his extraordinary scientific heritage and to the memory of him as a great researcher, teacher, organizer of science and human. Professor Mostowski pioneered and mastered many areas of mathematical logic. His contributions spanned set theory, recursion theory, and model theory - the backbone of foundations of mathematics. He is best known of the Kleene-Mostowski and Davis-Mostowski hierarchies of properties of integers reflecting the complexity of their definitions, and of the very elegant concept of a generalized quantifier which inspired and keeps stimulating a stream of deep work on fundamental issues of logics, deduction and reasoning both in mathematics and in computer science, and also of the contributions and excellent lectures on undecidability, unprovability, consistency and independence of various statements in set theory and arithmetic following Gödel, Tarski and Cohen. The overall content of the volume is designed to cover the current main streams in the field. For many years after WWII, especially in the late sixties, till his untimely death in 1975, Warsaw - where he led the centre of foundational studies - was a place where many leading logicians visited, studied, and started their career. Their memories form an important part of this volume, attempting to bring back the extraordinary achievements and personality of Mostowski.
From Citizens to Subjects

From Citizens to Subjects challenges the common assertion in historiography that Enlightenment-era centralization and rationalization brought progress and prosperity to all European states, arguing instead that centralization failed to improve the socioeconomic position of urban residents in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth over a hundred-year period.
Murphy examines the government of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the several imperial administrations that replaced it after the Partitions, comparing and contrasting their relationships with local citizenry, minority communities, and nobles who enjoyed considerable autonomy in their management of the cities of present-day Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. He shows how the failure of Enlightenment-era reform was a direct result of the inherent defects in the reformers' visions, rather than from sabotage by shortsighted local residents. Reform in Poland-Lithuania effectively destroyed the existing system of complexities and imprecisions that had allowed certain towns to flourish, while also fostering a culture of self-government and civic republicanism among city citizens of all ranks and religions. By the mid-nineteenth century, the increasingly immobile post-Enlightenment state had transformed activist citizens into largely powerless subjects without conferring the promised material and economic benefits of centralization.

2004,2003
Michael Kalecki was a Polish economist who independently discovered many of the key concepts of what is now identified as Keynesian theory. His contribution to macroeconomics was late in being acknowledged, but his work can be seen to have resounding influence on some of today's economic problems. The analyses presented in this book serve to scrutinize Kalecki's theories and show both their significance for explaining the working of modern economies and the areas that need adaptation to changed circumstances. Crucial issues in the present world economy covered in this book include: * the pattern of cyclical recession and financial crises * historically high levels of unemployment and poverty * neoliberal economic policies
Zdzislaw L. Sadowski is Professor of Economics at the University of Warwas, Poland. Adam Szeworski is Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Warsaw, Poland.

Together and Apart in Brzezany
2002
\"... by reconstructing the history/experience of Brzezany in Jewish, Ukrainian, and Polish memories [Redlich] has produced a beautiful parallel narrative of a world that was lost three times over... a truly wonderful achievement.\" -Jan T. Gross, author of Neighbors
Shimon Redlich draws on the historical record, his own childhood memories, and interviews with Poles, Jews, and Ukrainians who lived in the small eastern Polish town of Brzezany to construct this account of the changing relationships among the town's three ethnic groups before, during, and after World War II. He details the history of Brzezany from the prewar decades (when it was part of independent Poland and members of the three communities remember living relatively amicably \"together and apart\"), through the tensions of Soviet rule, the trauma of the Nazi occupation, and the recapture of the town by the Red Army in 1945. Historical and contemporary photographs of Brzezany and its inhabitants add immediacy to this fascinating excursion into history brought to life, from differing perspectives, by those who lived through it.
