Political Economy and the Medici
2020
Using materials from the important collection of Medici manuscripts donated to Harvard Business School by Harry Gordon Selfridge, this paper explores the geopolitics of the transformation of raw wool into finished cloth, and the role played in that process by Medici entrepreneurs, their guild, and their government. It aims to show that the history of political economy cannot truly be understood without business history. Successful business practices used by Medici entrepreneurs were first theorized by Giovanni Botero and others as what would become an “Italian model” in political economy, a model that had a profoundly wide-ranging impact, and that puts the lie to the commonplace in the history of ideas that the Italian Renaissance, so precocious in other fields, was silent on the topic of political economy.

Antonio Serra: A Neglected Herald of the Acquisitive System
1991
The spirit of capitalism arose not from a change in religion, as Max Weber claims, but from a break in the philosophic tradition that was initiated by Machiavelli, whose economic consequences were spelled out by the Neapolitan Antonio Serra in a path-breaking treatise of 1613. Serra called for an active government promoting manufacturing enterprises that would enjoy ever-advancing technology and indefinite declines in unit costs. A newly-structured market economy would guarantee an ever-growing consumer basket in an acquisitive system centered in self-advantage, national and individual, pursued in independence of traditional moral restraints on avarice. Writing in jail, Serra advances his new and anti-scholastic ideas with great discretion for fear of persecution by political and ecclesiastical authorities who were, at the time, against innovation of all kinds.

Macumba blamed in boys' murders ; But poverty and politics also cited in gruesome string of 'black magic' crimes
2002
This sprawling nation of 170 million has long enjoyed surprising religious diversity despite being the world's most populous Roman Catholic country. But Brazilians' tolerance is being sorely tested as victims' parents and community leaders blame the slayings on the dark side of Macumba. The [Maranhao] murders, which followed 26 similar slayings in the neighbouring state of Para from 1989 to 1991, also highlight the injustice suffered by the poor- the vast majority of Brazilians whose homicides often go unpunished and sometimes are simply ignored. Roseana Sarney, Maranhao's governor and a politician with high hopes for October's national elections, has refused requests by victims' families and human-rights groups to bring in federal agents to investigate the crimes.
