Examining a century of dance criticism in the United
States and its influence on aesthetics and inclusion
Dance criticism has long been integral to dance as an art form,
serving as documentation and validation of dance performances, yet
few studies have taken a close look at the impact of key critics
and approaches to criticism over time. The first book to examine
dance criticism in the United States across 100 years, from the
late 1920s to the early twenty-first century, Shaping Dance
Canons argues that critics in the popular press have
influenced how dance has been defined and valued, as well as which
artists and dance forms have been taken most seriously.
Kate Mattingly likens the effect of dance writing to that of a
flashlight, illuminating certain aesthetics at the expense of
others. Mattingly shows how criticism can preserve and reproduce
criteria for what qualifies as high art through generations of
writers and in dance history courses, textbooks, and curricular
design. She examines the gatekeeping role of prominent critics such
as John Martin and Yvonne Rainer while highlighting the
often-overlooked perspectives of writers from minoritized
backgrounds and dance traditions. The book also includes an
analysis of digital platforms and current dance projects-On the
Boards TV, thINKingDANCE , Black Dance Stories, and amara
tabor-smith's House/Full of BlackWomen -that challenge
systemic exclusions. In doing so, the book calls for ongoing
dialogue and action to make dance criticism more equitable and
inclusive.

Argentine Queer Tango: Dance and Sexuality Politics in Buenos Airesinvestigates changes in tango dancing in Buenos Aires during the first decade of the twenty-first century and its relationship to contemporary social and cultural transformations. Mercedes Liska focuses on one of the proposed alternatives to conventional tango, queer tango, which proposes to rethink one of the alleged icons of a national culture from a feminist conception and to imagine social transformation processes from bodily experiences. Specifically, this book analyzes the value of bodily experiences, the redefinition of the mind-body relationship, and the transformation in the dynamics of the dance from the heteronormative movements of tango. In doing so, Liska addresses the ways in which bodily techniques and gender theories are involved in the denaturing and corporeality decoding of tango and its historical senses as well as the connections between different tango dance practices spread throughout the world.

Across America, strip clubs have come under attack by a politically aggressive segment of the Christian Right. Using plausible-sounding but factually untrue arguments about the harmful effects of strip clubs on their communities, the Christian Right has stoked public outrage and incited local and state governments to impose onerous restrictions on the clubs with the intent of dismantling the exotic dance industry. But an even larger agenda is at work, according to Judith Lynne Hanna. InNaked Truth, she builds a convincing case that the attack on exotic dance is part of the activist Christian Right's \"grand design\" to supplant constitutional democracy in America with a Bible-based theocracy.
Hanna takes readers onstage, backstage, and into the community and courts to reveal the conflicts, charges, and realities that are playing out at the intersection of erotic fantasy, religion, politics, and law. She explains why exotic dance is a legitimate form of artistic communication and debunks the many myths and untruths that the Christian Right uses to fight strip clubs. Hanna also demonstrates that while the fight happens at the local level, it is part of a national campaign to regulate sexuality and punish those who do not adhere to Scripture-based moral values. Ultimately, she argues, the naked truth is that the separation of church and state is under siege and our civil liberties-free speech, women's rights, and free enterprise-are at stake.

In east Javanese dance traditions like Beskalan and Ngremo , musicians and dancers negotiate gender through performances where males embody femininity and females embody masculinity.
