Forced marriage as a political project: Sexual rules and relations in the Lord's Resistance Army
2014
One of the most vexing contradictions about the Uganda originated rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), is the fact that it institutionalized forced marriage on the one hand, while actively discouraging sexually immoral behavior on the other: rape, sexual violence, and promiscuity both within the group and outside it were punishable by severe beating or death. What explains this contradiction? The article suggests that in addition to maintaining discipline and control over a diverse and reluctant group, forced marriage and the regulation of sexual relations reproduced a political project of imagining a 'new Acholi' nation. The article draws on original data collected in focus group discussions with former commanders and wives to commanders to discuss the historical evolution of this vision, how the LRA enforced rules regarding sexual behavior, and finally, the way forced marriage implicated women and girls in the organization of power and domination in the group until it was forced from permanent bases in Sudan in 2002.

Enigma variations : a novel
\"Whether in southern Italy, where as a boy he has a crush on his parents' cabinetmaker; or on a snowbound campus in New England, where his enduring passion for a girl he'll meet again and again over the years is counterpointed by anonymous encounters with other men; or on a tennis court in Central Park; or on a sidewalk in early spring in New York, [Paul's] attachments are ungraspable, transient, and forever underwritten by raw desire--not for just one person's body but, inevitably, for someone else's as well\"-- Provided by publisher.
Let's talk about sex – what do older men and women say about their sexual relations and sexual activities? A qualitative analysis of ELSA Wave 6 data
2018
In 2012/2013 the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) included a comprehensive Sexual Relationships and Activities Questionnaire (SRA-Q). A total of 7,079 men and women mainly aged 50 to >90, primarily heterosexual and in a coupled relationship, completed the SRA-Q, answering a series of questions about their attitudes to sexual relationships, their own sexual activities, problems and concerns with sexual functioning, and quality of intimate relationships. The questions aimed to gain insights into the ways in which sexual relations and activities related to health, wellbeing and other lifestyle factors change as people grow older. The primary mode of data collection was a tick box response to a series of questions. However, at the end of the questionnaire an open comment box was provided, which asked respondents whether there was anything else that they would like to say; 1,084 respondents provided additional information and these comments created a unique qualitative data-set. The analysis of the data then illustrated how people's health, relationships, experiences and perceptions of ageing, along with sexual satisfaction, impact on sexual relationships and activities.

Unsafe Words
2023
Queer people may not have invented sex, but queers have long been
pioneers in imagining new ways to have it. Yet their voices have
been largely absent from the #MeToo conversation. What can queer
people learn from the #MeToo conversation? And what can queer
communities teach the rest of the world about ethical sex? This
provocative book brings together academics, activists, artists, and
sex workers to tackle challenging questions about sex, power,
consent, and harm. While responding to the need for sex to be
consensual and mutually pleasurable, these chapter authors resist
the heteronormative assumptions, class norms, and racial privilege
underlying much #MeToo discourse. The essays reveal the tools that
queer communities themselves have developed to practice ethical
sex-from the sex worker negotiating with her client to the gay man
having anonymous sex in the back room. At the same time, they
explore how queer communities might better prevent and respond to
sexual violence without recourse to a police force that is
frequently racist, homophobic, and transphobic. Telling a queerer
side of the #MeToo story, Unsafe Words dares to challenge
dogmatic assumptions about sex and consent while developing tools
and language to promote more ethical and more pleasurable sex for
everyone.
Impact of Teachers’ Inappropriate Intimacy with Learners on the Performance of High School Learners around Man’ombe Circuit, Mopani District, Limpopo Province
2024
Inappropriate intimate relationships among teachers and learners in high schools are a matter of concern, in the education sector. This matter has been around for years and has had an impact on the academic performance of the learners. The extent to which these inappropriate intimate teacher-learner relationships impact the academic performance of learners has not been sufficiently investigated in the body of knowledge, particularly, its impact in Man’ombe Circuit. This research followed a qualitative research design, and the target population of this study was teachers at schools in Man’ombe Circuit. The researcher utilized a purposive sampling technique and the sample size comprised of 10 participants. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews and recordings using an audio recorder; the data were analysed using thematic content analysis and ATLAS ti. The findings showed that the impact of inappropriate intimacy among learners and teachers is in the form of poor academic performance, shift in learners’ focus, emotional and psychological disturbances, increase in contempt behaviour of the learners, and enhanced social anomalies. The findings also revealed that factors contributing to inappropriate, intimate relationships between teachers and high school learners are the students’ desire for better grades, learners' background knowledge, exploitation, student’s need for financial support, and peer pressure. This study recommends that the approaches that can be adopted towards addressing inappropriate, intimate relationships between teachers and high school learners are - policy education, increased awareness of abuse, stricter internal disciplinary measures and thorough investigation processes.
