Criticism and interpretation
2023
Interfaith controversies and disputes regarding the role of reason in interpreting the Scriptures characterised scholarly discussion in the Low Countries between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Jewish author Abraham Gómez Silveira contributed to this discussion with an eclectic body of literature. This article focuses on his Libro Mudo (Mute Book), which embodies his efforts to present the Jewish religion as the only rational one and the Christian dogma as irrational. In order to corroborate his reading, Silveira mostly bases his argumentation on non-Jewish texts. By selecting passages from the New Testaments, Christian religious commentaries as well as Qur'anic excerpts, Silveira aims to demonstrate that even non-Jewish sources prove the rationality of the Jewish theological system. The novelty of Silveira's approach consists in confuting Christian dogma by accepting the Gospels as reliable historical sources. In this argumentative structure, the Qur'an has a similar although not identical function.

Healthcare Access and Quality Index based on mortality from causes amenable to personal health care in 195 countries and territories, 1990–2015: a novel analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015
2017
National levels of personal health-care access and quality can be approximated by measuring mortality rates from causes that should not be fatal in the presence of effective medical care (ie, amenable mortality). Previous analyses of mortality amenable to health care only focused on high-income countries and faced several methodological challenges. In the present analysis, we use the highly standardised cause of death and risk factor estimates generated through the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) to improve and expand the quantification of personal health-care access and quality for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015.
We mapped the most widely used list of causes amenable to personal health care developed by Nolte and McKee to 32 GBD causes. We accounted for variations in cause of death certification and misclassifications through the extensive data standardisation processes and redistribution algorithms developed for GBD. To isolate the effects of personal health-care access and quality, we risk-standardised cause-specific mortality rates for each geography-year by removing the joint effects of local environmental and behavioural risks, and adding back the global levels of risk exposure as estimated for GBD 2015. We employed principal component analysis to create a single, interpretable summary measure–the Healthcare Quality and Access (HAQ) Index–on a scale of 0 to 100. The HAQ Index showed strong convergence validity as compared with other health-system indicators, including health expenditure per capita (r=0·88), an index of 11 universal health coverage interventions (r=0·83), and human resources for health per 1000 (r=0·77). We used free disposal hull analysis with bootstrapping to produce a frontier based on the relationship between the HAQ Index and the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a measure of overall development consisting of income per capita, average years of education, and total fertility rates. This frontier allowed us to better quantify the maximum levels of personal health-care access and quality achieved across the development spectrum, and pinpoint geographies where gaps between observed and potential levels have narrowed or widened over time.
Between 1990 and 2015, nearly all countries and territories saw their HAQ Index values improve; nonetheless, the difference between the highest and lowest observed HAQ Index was larger in 2015 than in 1990, ranging from 28·6 to 94·6. Of 195 geographies, 167 had statistically significant increases in HAQ Index levels since 1990, with South Korea, Turkey, Peru, China, and the Maldives recording among the largest gains by 2015. Performance on the HAQ Index and individual causes showed distinct patterns by region and level of development, yet substantial heterogeneities emerged for several causes, including cancers in highest-SDI countries; chronic kidney disease, diabetes, diarrhoeal diseases, and lower respiratory infections among middle-SDI countries; and measles and tetanus among lowest-SDI countries. While the global HAQ Index average rose from 40·7 (95% uncertainty interval, 39·0–42·8) in 1990 to 53·7 (52·2–55·4) in 2015, far less progress occurred in narrowing the gap between observed HAQ Index values and maximum levels achieved; at the global level, the difference between the observed and frontier HAQ Index only decreased from 21·2 in 1990 to 20·1 in 2015. If every country and territory had achieved the highest observed HAQ Index by their corresponding level of SDI, the global average would have been 73·8 in 2015. Several countries, particularly in eastern and western sub-Saharan Africa, reached HAQ Index values similar to or beyond their development levels, whereas others, namely in southern sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and south Asia, lagged behind what geographies of similar development attained between 1990 and 2015.
This novel extension of the GBD Study shows the untapped potential for personal health-care access and quality improvement across the development spectrum. Amid substantive advances in personal health care at the national level, heterogeneous patterns for individual causes in given countries or territories suggest that few places have consistently achieved optimal health-care access and quality across health-system functions and therapeutic areas. This is especially evident in middle-SDI countries, many of which have recently undergone or are currently experiencing epidemiological transitions. The HAQ Index, if paired with other measures of health-system characteristics such as intervention coverage, could provide a robust avenue for tracking progress on universal health coverage and identifying local priorities for strengthening personal health-care quality and access throughout the world.

Mario Magalhaes: development is health/Mario Magalhaes: desenvolvimento e saude
2015
Mario Magalhaes da Silveira (1905-1986) was the main mentor of the school of thought known as \"developmental public health\" whose influence peaked at the III National Health Assembly. A critic of the adoption of North American models of public health organization, of the centralism and vertical organization of public health campaigns and the interference of international bodies, the public health doctor held the view that as health is a problem of superstructure, it depends on industrial economic development. He also defended the urgent need to municipalize public health in order to attend to the real needs of the Brazilian population. A pioneer of the intermingling of economic and demographic variables, he may be seen as a predecessor of the health economy discipline. The article describes the professional path of Mario Magalhaes as a backdrop to his critical thinking on specific national situations and the health policies adopted.

2021
This paper intends to make an interlocution between Nise da Silveira's theory and praxis regarding the institutional approach to psychosis and Freud's and Lacan's theorizations on the possibilities of stabilization concerning the Verwerfung. It argues that, despite not being a psychoanalyst, Nise da Silveira acted in conformity to psychoanalytic ethics when she ensured the free speech of the psychotic.

Case Study First Aid in Art Therapy and its liberating role in Bosnia and Herzegovina Temporary Reception Centers for Migrants and Refugees
2022
First Aid in Art Therapy is a therapeutic approach carried out in Bosnian migrants and refugee camps from October 2019 to the present.. In an extremely challenging context for therapists and beneficiaries, Art Therapy sessions were held according to the methodology of free creative expression, with a high degree of adjustability. A non-directed work prioritizing each participant’s needs, spontaneity, and the factor of transitoriness, either of conditions or of emotions, was revealed to be the appropriate approach within a context of humanitarian crisis. In this study, the theoretical foundations of Carl Jung and Nise da Silveira[1] were used, especially with regard to the concept of Archetype, which is essential for a better understanding of the images produced in these sessions. It could be observed in the migrants and refugees’ work that certain repeated patterns appeared, for example: feminine figures and mandalas: which coincide with two strong archetypes that will be highlighted.

This research is focused on the susceptibility assessment of shallow slides by modeling the failure and run-out areas separately. The shallow slides failure is evaluated using a statistical method (logistic regression) and for the run-out assessment, a simple cellular automata model is proposed. The existence of shallow slides inventories occurred in distinct time periods allowed the separation of data into two independent groups (modeling and validation) and the adoption of the temporal criterion for the independent validation. The logistic regression model showed a very good predictive capacity (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.90), although it may be overestimated, as well as the susceptibility scores obtained. The run-out modeling, using a simple cellular automata model developed for this study, provided good results, with an overlap between the simulation and the real cases of 77%. Lastly, a final shallow slide susceptibility map was constructed including both failure and run-out areas. This work accomplished a combination of low-cost methodology with limited input data that allowed a good performance of the landslide susceptibility assessment and can be easily applied to other regions.

Bandone do Caverá: a memória como identidade e homenagem
2025
The visibility and valorization of black people in the southern Brazilian culture are vindicated in Bandone do Caverá (2008), a poem written in the pattern of the pampa tradition which take the life of Adauto Costa Ferreira, a musician that lived in the rural region of Rosário do Sul/RS. The author, Oliveira Silveira (1941-2009), purpose, in his last published work, an itinerary to the memory and oral history of remembrances of childhood from music as an aggregator element of family and community. The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of Bandone do Caverá by the composition of the protagonist as a positive reference of man, black and gaucho by means of a time that does not exist anymore. To do this reading, we consider mainly the studies of afro-brazilian literature by Cuti (2010), Miriam Alves (2010), Zilá Bernd (2011). We noted that the lyric speaker uses the ancestral history as an aggregator element of the southern culture, resulting in a homage to a figure related to the emotional memory and ethical identity of the author.
