The first aim of this paper is to lay the foundation of the theory of
multicomplexes. After setting the main definitions, we construct the singular multicomplex
In the second part of this work we apply the theory of multicomplexes to the study of the bounded
cohomology of topological spaces. Our constructions and arguments culminate in the complete proofs of Gromov’s Mapping Theorem (which
implies in particular that the bounded cohomology of a space only depends on its fundamental group) and of Gromov’s Vanishing Theorem,
which ensures the vanishing of the simplicial volume of closed manifolds admitting an amenable cover of small multiplicity.
The
third and last part of the paper is devoted to the study of locally finite chains on non-compact spaces, hence to the simplicial volume
of open manifolds. We expand some ideas of Gromov to provide detailed proofs of a criterion for the vanishing and a criterion for the

Higher category theory is generally regarded as technical and forbidding, but part of it is considerably more tractable: the theory of infinity-categories, higher categories in which all higher morphisms are assumed to be invertible. In Higher Topos Theory, Jacob Lurie presents the foundations of this theory, using the language of weak Kan complexes introduced by Boardman and Vogt, and shows how existing theorems in algebraic topology can be reformulated and generalized in the theory's new language. The result is a powerful theory with applications in many areas of mathematics.

We will obtain this as a corollary of a more general result which classifies all simplicial maps between ordinary simplicial sets in a similar fashion. Correspondences between simplicial sets (and

-categories) are a generalization of the concept of profunctor (or bimodule) pertaining to categories. While categories, functors and profunctors are organized in a double category, we will exhibit simplicial sets, simplicial maps, and correspondences as part of a simplicial category. This allows us to make precise statements and provide proofs. Our main tool is the language of double categories, which we use in the context of simplicial categories as well.

Strong Discrete Morse Theory and Simplicial L–S Category: A Discrete Version of the Lusternik–Schnirelmann Theorem

We prove a discrete version of the Lusternik–Schnirelmann (L–S) theorem for discrete Morse functions and the recently introduced simplicial L–S category of a simplicial complex. To accomplish this, a new notion of critical object of a discrete Morse function is presented, which generalizes the usual concept of critical simplex (in the sense of R. Forman). We show that the non-existence of such critical objects guarantees the strong homotopy equivalence (in the Barmak and Minian’s sense) between the corresponding sublevel complexes. Finally, we establish that the number of critical objects of a discrete Morse function defined on K is an upper bound for the non-normalized simplicial L–S category of K.

Complete Segal spaces arising from simplicial categories

In this paper, we compare several functors which take simplicial categories or model categories to complete Segal spaces, which are particularly nice simplicial spaces which, like simplicial categories, can be considered to be models for homotopy theories. We then give a characterization, up to weak equivalence, of complete Segal spaces arising from these functors.

We show that if $(M,\\otimes,I)$ is a monoidal model category then $\\mathbb{R}\\underline{\\rm End}_{M}(I)$ is a (weak) 2-monoid in sSet. This applies in particular when M is the category of A-bimodules over a simplicial monoid A: the derived endomorphisms of A then form its Hochschild cohomology, which therefore becomes a simplicial 2-monoid.
