The forgotten
1998
Scholars like the late Walter Keir of Aberdeen University and Anne Cluysenaar of Sheffield produced collections of his poetry and there are those, like Professor Hobsbaum of Glasgow, who feel his greatest achievement was a splendid documentary novel on the fishing industry called Living Silver. In fact, I met him in the week of his eleventh birthday, which also happened to be the eve of the Second World War. On that Saturday night in September 1939 they were evacuating Glasgow children to avoid Hitler's bombs, and the pupils of Dowanhill School spilled off a train in our remote Aberdeenshire village of Maud. We had room for two boys and the pair who appeared on our doorstep were the Singer brothers from 9 Ruthven Street, Hillhead, just off Byres Road. He returned to Hyndland School in Glasgow but was soon causing his mother alarm with late-night wanderings and unpredictable behaviour. For [Jimmy Singer] was a wild but lonesome spirit for whom there was little prospect of happiness. He roamed through London and the Continent before returning to Glasgow University in 1949. Coming back to Ruthven Street one day with a student friend, Russell Grant (now a retired doctor in London), he found that his mother had hanged herself. They had the task of cutting her down.
