Philomena; Ruth's Review
2016
Grief, a many splendor thing. Joy over the discovery her son was loved by his adoptive parents. Sadness that she hadn't been able to say good-bye to her son before he died. Anger towards the elderly nun, Sister Hildebrand, who knew [Philomena] and would have been able to put her in touch with her son. Forgiveness. Philomena chose to forgive the elderly sister. [Martin Sixsmith] does not until Philomena reminds him that we are all flawed, all fail, all need forgiveness Together Sixsmith and Philomena take a spiritual journey that includes visiting the United States.

'Philomena' fills up on the spirit of the season
2013
After she tearfully spills her story to her adult daughter on what would be [Anthony]'s 50th birthday, her daughter connects [Philomena] with former BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith ([Steve Coogan]). The reporter initially resists what he dismisses as a human interest feature. He's a political reporter. But, drawn by her sad tale, he spends five years helping Philomena search for her son, sorting through a tangled web of secrets and hidden truths. Philomena's son was adopted along with Mary, a little girl who was his best pal as a toddler. When Philomena encounters Mary (Mare Winningham) as an adult, the film seems to have left some crucial dialogue--or perhaps an emotional scene--on the cutting-room floor. We've come to know the good-natured, chatty Philomena, and her reaction upon seeing Mary after five decades is uncharacteristically muted.

Nuns made sure the search was going to be in vain
2009
\"I said, well, I'm not sure, it's not really what I do, but she said, 'Come and meet her anyway', and it turned out to be [Philomena Lee]'s daughter Jane. \"Jane was so shocked, but determined to find her brother. It turned out that for the 50 years she'd been keeping her secret, Philomena went back to Roscrea, and asked the nuns where [Michael Hess] was, but they just produced this terrible statement she'd been forced to sign giving him up, and promising never to look for him. I can understand in some cases, people's privacy needs to be protected, but he'd been back to Roscrea himself looking for her, and the nuns knew that he was looking for her, it was very cruel.
