As director of community programs, Slade plans and develops programs for people of all ages in Hampton and Newport News. One woman in Missouri, Slade said, writes her every Thanksgiving and Christmas to say thank-you. The woman once lived next door to Slade in Newport News. Lorenzo Sheppard, a detective with the Newport News Police Department, recalls Slade's influence when he worked as a college student at local recreation centers. Slade, he said, was running several programs at the centers and \"was there, hands-on.\"

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bassett Pagano; three sons, [Neal \"The Barber\" Pagano] of Westbrook, Steven Pagano of Essex and Richard Pagano of East Lyme; three brothers, Robert Pagano of North Carolina, Gabriel Acampora of Northford and Catello Pagano of Massachusetts; three sisters, Jessica Lee of Washington, Bernadette Jones of Westbrook and Rose Pagano of Norwich; and three grandchildren. The funeral procession will leave from The Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, Friday at 10 a.m. to St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Westbrook. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the Westbrook Ambulance Association, Boston Post Road, Westbrook, CT 06498 or the Valley Shore Animal Welfare League, P.O.
